In all seriousness, what is the reality of our beloved landing both or even one of these guys? Gill, as we all know, there is family history, Brad/TA/Chet have shown love, etc. But with Fears, I recall the recruitment of his older brother was kinda all over the place, with us showing interest early, then backing off later. Did that completely kill any chance for us with his little brother?

Same thing this year. If we're unable to bring in an experienced quality PG, we probably won't be that good. The good thing is that if we get someone like RayJ or Tyger, they're a lot less likely to bolt than Skyy Clark.
Even if we don’t bring one, which sounds unlikely, we have multiple guys that will be far more comfortable with the ball in their hands compared to last year. Our floor is what we saw last season. That’s a good floor to have.

Disagree. Guys comfortable with the ball in their hands is nice. But that doesn't make them PGs. We absolutely need to add a quality PG to be signifcanty better than last year. And it sounds like we will.

Care to expand for those of us who don't watch?
Kendall Gill is on the post game show and always throwing out pro Illini vibes. Phoenix is an interesting prospect at an interesting school not known for basketball. Hasnt really been relevant since Egwu played for them. I think Illinois might have been Phoenix' first offer.

I'd expect him to start. I do not feel Oregon's system was a good fit for him. He played the 3 a lot but is more if a 4 not as good as but kind of like EJ Liddell. QG struggled guarding quicker wings but did well vs guy like Wahl of Wisconsin. I view our line up like Piper does after listening to last nights podcast.

1 PG- vet transfer/Harmon/ DGL
2- TSJ/Harris/TY/ Harmon/Domask
3- Domask/Goode/TY
4- QG/Hawk/ Ty/ Domask/Amani
5- Hawk/Dain/ Amani/ QG

I feel Ty will play starters minutes due to his versatility Ty can really play almost any position except as a shooter to stretch the opposition. Ty will play a lot and could be the best 6th man in the B10. Domask just does so many things well that this squad needed last season given his ability to shoot, pass, cut, 87 percent from the line and plays without making many errors I just think he is being undervalued. Also QG is does some things TY does and is a much better shooter. Clearly Piper and Warner expect Domask and QG to start and I do too.
If Hawk leaves we add a big. If TSJ does then it will be interesting to see what happens.
You could also slip Goode into the 2 spot.

You said we wouldn’t be that good. I agree, a veteran point guard raises our ceiling significantly but we’ll be a decent team even if we miss out. Perhaps the last decade of being a bubble team lowered my standards.

FWIW I've heard that Coleman isn't happy and doesn't plan on coming back. We all thought he was good as gone this time last year so maybe he can be convinced again.
Well I can say from a source that is extremely close to Coleman, the only thing he wasn’t happy with was noncommittal freshmen and lack of willingness in some players to try to build chemistry. He loves BU and the Illini program. Coleman is a winner and wants to run deep in March with guys that are bought in.

Just wondering, when you say "heard" was this from a source? Did you have a direct interaction with someone that gave you this info? Or just something you happened to read on another board/social media? I find it really odd when someone reads something somewhere and frames it as "heard."

Which season has he had in the last 4 years that hasn't worked out?
I would have to say this past season was disappointing the way it played out…we did still get 20 and won some HUGE games early.

AND…if that’s a Brad Underwood, down year…I’ll take it.

At this point, it goes without saying…but
I credit him with getting the stench off the program. So much better than the sewer we crawled out of in the Groce/Late Weber years obviously.

This season however, wasn’t embarrassing but it was definitely dysfunctional and just not very good basketball IMO.

College B-ball is in a state of flux…with NIL and the Transfer Portal…and everyone is having to recalibrate. There’s a lot of gambling big to win big. Who knows what strategies will end up winning out.

I think this year was either a departure from Brad-classic or it’s just a natural part of his evolution as a coach. (Maybe both)

Coleman is happy and is open to coming back but will explore all his options and make sure it’s the best decision for him and his future … Per sources … AKA Coleman 🤷🏻‍♂️

Now - he will be the first one to tell you he was ticked with guys on the roster last year … It didn’t work … He said I want to see change … I want guys who know their role and know what they’re supposed to do and be in the offense … I want to play with older guys and a PG who has some experience … So Brad said okay and you see what he’s done … Coleman is not upset with Brad … They talk very frequently …

Exactly … Almost like you were listening in on the convo I had Friday night with “sources” …

Last year, we brought in a bunch of freshmen to play significant minutes and asked former college role players to be our stars. We were relying on players to successfully make a jump for us to become the best version of ourselves. The results were an extremely mixed bag. Some players came through and some really didn't. This year, we're bringing in 3 fifth-year seniors and are asking them to either play roles they've previously played or take slightly less playing time. Basically, we're just asking extremely experienced players to just keep on doing what they've already shown they can do. If the roster fills out how we're hoping it does, it feels like we've cut out a lot of the unknowns that ended up hurting us last season. I think it's a sound strategy.
I see where you come from. While TSJ and Mayer did have expanded role comparing to them in their previous schools, I don't think they were over their heads. They were simply not as good as Ayo and Kofi in terms of scoring consistency/when needed but that's a tall bar. The theory last year was collectively they could still be a better team due to talents at more positions. However, things kind of fell apart and people blamed the freshmen PG play at the end of the season. I think that's true but new teams need time to gel is also a factor. So now we have a chance to verify/validate that theory and supposedly it all hinges on the PG we will be getting.

Question for @Indy Illini Fan and the other insiders. Assuming the current open scholarship will be used on a veteran PG and TSJ comes back but Hawk doesn’t, what position do they target for Hawk’s then open scholarship? I’d assume a big, but is that correct? And do they have a (some) “back channel” guy(s) in mind?

Coleman is a talented player but I just hope he can hit his three pointers. That's his ticket to and thrive in NBA. He can't blame freshmen for all those chucking balls.

QG only starts if Coleman and or TSJ don’t come back. I don’t see him starting if they both come back.
1 - Vet PG
2 - TSJ
3 - Ty
4 - CoHawk
5- Dain
