Saturday walk me off the shelf, can someone give me some stats where we shouldn't be worried that would be the backups at PG for us? Dont know much about Harmon, but Rodgers cant shoot the ball and DGL is going to struggle to see the floor from what we've been hearing.
Every team's backup point guard has some weaknesses or else they would be a starting point guard. Ty and TSJ can both backup RayJ and potentially Harmon and DGL as well. Although, we don't actually have RayJ yet. It's not like we were ever getting both him and Tyger.

My concern is we dont truly have a backup PG and I think it caused alot of issues last year. Its not ideal having either Ty or TSJ as backup options IMO. BU and the staff I'm sure have a game plan, but I dont think its out of bounds to have concerns about our PG situation.

Last year per game we ranked 127th in the nation in TOVs and 237th in assists. If we are relying on TY and TSJ to be the backups (they are studs, but not PGs) we could have a rocky year.

Coleman seems like a pick 22-45 guy to me. I can see teams taking a swing on his potential, with the belief that he has major talent and is a smart player that could benefit a lot of added space and a smaller, more defined role. He's still very theoretical in a lot of ways, but teams know he can defend and the chance of him becoming more consistently like Syracuse-Coleman is incredibly enticing. He's also relatively young in terms of in-game reps. I wouldn't be surprised if he went in the late first to a playoff team that wants to have a guy like him locked up on a cheap contract for 4 years. If he stays in the draft, I'd like to see him land on Golden State with their pass-happy offense.

TSJ is the one that is less unique in skills and measurements (crazy thing to say for a freak like him, but it's true), and the one that scouts have had much greater time to nitpick over his college career. I'd be surprised if he went above pick 40.
Yeah I think Shannon is a better player than Coleman right now, but there are many more guys who can do what he does. I think he’ll get a shot in the league but he might be best off getting that NIL one more year.

What Coleman can do is just way more valuable to NBA teams. It’s not super common for guys to have his size, length, and skillset so it’s way more intriguing what his potential is. He just needs it to be developed a lot though.

If I had to guess right now Shannon is probably late second round to undrafted and Coleman would go anywhere from 35-50. I could see a team who’s big on player development take a chance on Coleman early to mid second round.

If this is the biggest worry we have going into next season I think you’re underestimating how well and truly #blessed we are.

Nothing like talking about an all American backing up a kid that has committed to us yet.
If you have 2 point guards of that caliber you let them both play like Dee and Deron. Only one on the bench at a time, when they rest.

He @illini0440 , just curious, how close are the football and basketball programs? Seems like they both attend each other's games often and like each other stuff on social.
Well yeah they are close. Very few people actually understand what all goes into coaching at the college and pro level so common ground there. Also football is a big recruiting tool for basketball and vice versa. Some of the football assistants and Chester are close. Brad and Bret talk but the head coaches are always so busy a lot of times it’s hard for them to meet up.

While I agree with you that not having a backup PG is problematic. I just one to get one before we worry about a backup.

Ty at PG? That might be worse than when we tried Sergio at PG.

How many minutes do you think a true point is gonna sit? Most starting points log in excess of 30 minutes a game and some guys play a lot more than that. If we cant patch something together with the current personnel for 3 to 7 minutes a game while a point gets a breather each half we have serious ball handling issues.

I am no expert on talent.... but I watch a lot of BB and saw DGL play several OTE games against major D1 talent this year. He needs some Fletching, like most freshmen, but I think by B1G season a lot of people might be surprised by his talent and he should be ready for relief minutes at the point..

And wait...did you think we were trying to get Tyger to come in to be our backup PG???
We’ve established Tyga isn’t coming now (see my post earlier) RayJ would have been the second option to him. Now that RayJ is the main option, the question was who was going to back him up at PG.

People on here spend way too much time trying to dig at other posters.

We have come a long way when we are worrying about the backup PG. Sincere, Ty, Dre Giggs-Lawhorn. We are loaded.

Actually we have yet to get there as we have not yet secured the services of a veteran portal PG. If we get that, I'll trust that we have guys that can fill in 6-8 min/game at PG. Of your list, DGL seems the most likely. I like Sincere, but he isn't a PG. And Ty I also like but he's not even close to PG.

Ty can most definitely play the 1, and can be really good at it.
