His assists per game are relatively low (ish) b/c he has never played more than 22 min/game. His assists per 40 and assist ratio are relatively good.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. It's not like he has expectations of playing 30 min/game wherever he goes. We need a ball handling guard that isn't a minus on D and can set guys up. Sure, he's got a glaring hole in his game -- lack of shooting -- but any available player right now has warts. I'd take him as the guard insurance we wish we'd had last year and, best case scenario, we need him less than anticipated. Worst case scenario = he plays a lot = our other (current) guard options are even worse than him = thank God we at least have him onboard.

kind of a no-brainer on our end. and the fit is pretty darn good. he's not a guy who expects to be a lead offensive option; he isn't a volume shooter

A few items...

Illinois may push for a commitment from 2025 guard Phoenix Gill. We'll see, but they like what they've seen here in June.

One reason that some don't like the Jason Jakstys offer is that they're still upset that Illinois backed off of James Brown.

Ty Rodgers is a guy who can initiate the offensive in the half court, but if they want to play fast he's not the full time point guard.

Gill: impressed by his play, guessing we'll want to see more, especially against better competition. this is one they don't want to get wrong, for glaringly clear reasons. plus, it's super early

Jakstys is nothing like Brown, other than really tall. backing off on Brown was the right call

Ty: if we don't bring in another point (I think we will), I don't think the plan is that Ty will be the full time PG (from a role perspective). he'll get the bulk of the time, but a some portion of the duties will be by committee. for example, Ty doesn't need to be bringing it up. for sure, he'll be the initiator most of the time. I'd rather pass the ball into the forecourt, than dribble it, even if my PG has crazy handles.

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t watched the kid play, but on the surface it sounds a lot like Sincere Harris, who is already on our roster.
I'll preface it by saying I have watched him play both for Iowa and WVU (I believe he had a career game against us a couple years ago, just KILLED us in the paint) and shoots in the neighborhood of 80% (!) from the line and about 33% from 3. He understands pace and can control it.

He's been through the B1G and Big 12 gauntlets, has a TON of college experience. Mature body.

So actually very little like Sencire except they both play defense

I agree, but I still believe Ty would be a very good PG. Defensively-great, Weak side rebounds - Great, Push Fastbreak - great, Motor/Feel for the game - great, Shooting - OK, FT- not good yet, Bringing the Ball up the floor - ok but will need help
But I think Ty still would play plenty of minutes at PG even with Toussaint. His career high in minutes is 21.8 per game. He’d probably play 17-2o mpg with us if Ty experiment works out and could play more if it doesn’t. The question is if that is enough minutes to bring him here.

Ty is a default option at PG if we do not add an experienced one.
Honestly in an ideal world he is our 6th man and playing the 3 and 4.
Ideally we have a legit PG/ TSJ/Domask/CH/Dainja starting.
Rodgers and Guerrier and Goode next off bench and can move CH to center.
DGL and Harmon helping at 1/2.
Hansberry and Harris spot minutes.
That is 12 guys so if no portal PG, and Harmon doesn't get in you still have 10 guys to work with.

If you loved Andres Feliz, you’ll like Joe Toussaint. He was always my favorite guy on those Iowa teams, love his asphalt game.

I personally like this team better without a guard who needs the ball in his hands all the time, I think he’d be a good fit.

Dain should be coming off the bench.

The best lineups you can put together include Hawkins at the 5 and likely Rodgers off the bench though I think playing both Domask and Goode together could be absolutely lethal and both have enough size to play small ball 4.

I personally think RayJ is the better fit

I agree with much of what you said, and I’m not enamored with the Ty PG experiment, but it does seem like BU wants to try it. And if the experienced PG we bring in is Toussaint, I just don’t think he’s going to play 30 mpg for us. Now if we brought in Krissa that is a different story. But sounds like that isn’t happening.

The PG BU is looking for this year has 2 jobs and that’s its
1.Get the ball past the half court line in less than 10 seconds.
2. Pass the ball to TSJ, or CH.

Let them shine, get them to NBA, and next year the recruits will come rolling in.

It’s a chess game

He's shoots 40% from the line, can't be in the game anywhere near the last five minutes and shouldn't be handling the ball anywhere near the amount of time is required of that position. Double that for Harris.

And when doing that....pray that they don't get fouled and miss the front end, which ultimately loses games.

What he did to us last year in Iowa City told us everything that we needed to know about our guard situation. Add that physicality, toughness and ability to shoot free throws to our group of wings...I'll take it.

He was a freshman, nervous and a little intimidated. This year will be different he will be comfortable. Him and Ty will split the PG roll with Harmon.
He is not a PG and will never be a PG. He is a very athletic wing and needs a ton of work on ball skills and to learn how to shoot.
Very raw. Maybe down the road if he stays he will be in rotation.

We didn't and don't have anyone that can stay in front of him. Not many teams do. Now he can be a little out of control at times, and a spotty shooter, but kid is a straight up baller.
