1) What father is going to fire his own son? 2) Given what Tyler is likely getting paid doubt ful if there are budgeted resources for attracting one of these high-powered x and o guys, with 18 years expereince and recuriting connections spanning the globe.
The budget is the question. I am sure there are a long list of guys who would like to come here for what TA is getting paid. Seriously doubt TU and Hamer are getting near that put together.

You are a FOIA request away from the answer there. Public universities have to disclose that info if asked
Not sure they have to be asked.....thought that public schools including universities had to disclose all salaried employees once a year

As of August of 2022, it looks like Hamer was making $183,600, and TU was making only $51,000. I would think that Tyler would get a bump when promoted.

In contrast, Bill Armstrong from LSU, who Indy said was interested in the position, was making $375,000 a year when he was fired from his Assistant Coaching position at LSU as part of the Will Wade scandal. Would Josh have authorized anything close to that on top of what our 3 existing primary recruiting Assistant Coaches are being paid?

Be careful what you wish for. An immediate fire under those circumstances means that Dainja, Goode, Rodgers, Harris, Hansberry and our potential 5 star Morez Johnson all could be transferring and with Shannon, Hawkins, Harmon, Domask and Guerrier all graduating we effectively could be starting from scratch. In a world of NIL and transfers, that might not be as big a problem than in the past for a new head coach like Indy's Sean Miller, but there are no guarantees that any of our current players or assistant coaches would come back nor that we would ever see Morez in the Orange and Blue. There is something to be said about continuity in a program/coaching staff and I am hoping to see our current underclassmen play and develop together for the next few years. If Brad can't succeed in the Tournament with this group and a handful of targeted transfers over the next few years, then he will be gone. But a first round exit next year shouldn't be enough for that to happen.

Make the tournament … He’s probably safe … Miss it …

Brad has set this team up to get old and win … Almost like a last ride with TJ and Coleman and maybe himself … And with how much we are losing … Outside of Morez are we really worried about who we’d lose if we can hire Muss, Tang or Sean ? I mean come on now guys, we’re the f’ing U of I … Missing the tournament is UNACCEPTABLE … And if we do then changes will need to be made …

(I’d also like to add Mick Cronin to this list … Sources have told me he might be looking for an exit at UCLA especially after losing Ivo)

Morez is coming as long as TA is here … And that’s literally from Morez himself … Talked to him today …

An hour after attending the ILLINI's loss to North Carolina in the 2005 National Championship game in St. Louis, I was sitting in the Illinois host hotel bar with 3 other ILLINI basketball fanatics rehashing what a great season it had been until some very questionable officiating resulted in a heartbreaking 5 point loss. At the table next to us, there were 4 Illinois high roller whiskey drinking alumni from Texas decked out in newly purchased ILLINI clothing and lots of gold chains/big rings etc. to go with their Cowboy hats, bolo ties and boots. The loud topic of conversation was the need to have AD Ron Guenther immediately fire Bruce Weber and hire Billy Gillespie. This was just one hour after a season that ended with a record of 37-2.
The life lesson I learned that night was that you can never satisfy the unreasonable expectations of boosters. You can only appease them until you get fired or otherwise move on.
Were they wrong?

While I don't share all of negativity towards Brad on this site yet, I'd say the transfer portal makes losing a coach a little less risky. It's all in the next hire.

I don’t hate Underwood … Lol … Brad and I talk quite often … I criticize when necessary and celebrate when necessary … Brad is a very blunt guy and just like to hear it like it is … And I’m not afraid to speak my mind … I literally talked to Brad for a while at an AAU game this week …

Brad knows if we miss the tournament he’s probably getting fired … I don’t understand why everyone thinks he’s so safe when even Brad knows the expectations here ??? And why I somehow hate Brad because I want him to succeed and meet expectations but am simply stating the consequences if he doesn’t ?

Do you think Josh hates him ? Because it’s the exact same convo he’s had with Brad … Come on now …

Excited Lets Go GIF

Lots of PTSD from the previous AD's basketball hire on here, most fear going back to those dark times. But we have a fantastic AD now that truly gets how important winning is. Let it all play out and have faith in Whitman!

I wish the moderator on this site would start a site for all the Underwood haters to rant and rave. Then maybe the rest of us could see a recruiting thread.
Not a bad idea. People who have legitimate concerns about coaching could also go there, even if they don't "hate" Underwood. Heck, we could even invite Polly Annas there who applaud every move by the coach, regardless of outcome.

Interesting dilema. Yes we could have added more senior assistant coaches to our staff like Calipari did.

Question is do you really need more than 3 senior recruiting assistants and 2 senior non recruiting assistants. Might be case where its not we don't have enough assistant coaches but rather we don't have the right assistant coaches. Our X&O's looked terrible last year on both offense and defense (too many guards had season best scoring against the Illini). I wish Brad and gone out and hired the best X&O assistant coach available (the Tex Winter of assistant coaches).

If athletic department had $750k extra funding for basketball program - might be better investment to put it into NIL$ for bring in 4 star freshman who ideally will stay 2-3 years.

I think we cheaped out and did neither. Maybe Whitman did not give Brad or Shauna Green any more money.

MBB is a hot mess with transfer portal and NIL$. Brad is not only coach who is challenged. Michigan and Wisconsin went to NIT last year. Ohio State did not even make NIT.

Brad is earning his $5M per year. If he only delivers middle of the pack B10 finishes (going to get tougher with UCLA and USC joining the conference) and first round NCAA exits he will not be the long term coach at Illinois. He has embraced transfer portal - MM, TSJ, Plummer, Quincy G, Marcus D, and Justin H and has been working with Guardians on $NIL (I assume effectively). I think he is the best option right now and I would gag over bringing in a public cheater like Sean Miller no matter how good he is supposed to be.

If Underwood underachieves and we don’t make the dance/we get bounced real early…put me down as pro Mick Cronin.

If I can’t get my pipe dream pick of Wright or D. Altman (from like 10 years ago) lol…I think Mick is probably my fave of the names you’ve shared.

…if Whitman goes that way that is of course.

You are a very reasonable fellow, and I appreciate you.

I was surprised that Cronin went to UCLA after growing up in Cincinnati, playing at Cincinatti and coaching15 years at Cincinnati. He looked like a lifer if there ever was one.

I am even more surprised with old school basketball style that he has had some real success. One Final 4, top 10 team last 2 years, recruiting well. Unless his wife hates it LA I can't see him leaving for a school like Illinois. Maybe blue blood like Kentucky, Indiana or Kansas but then again he is already at a blue blood.

Does anyone consider Indiana a blue blood anymore? I sure don't.
