Id bet $100 to the Guardians that it he would not be let go if he missed the NCAAT for less than 2 years in a row.

Idc how plugged in you are, you arent firing a coach for a single missed NCAAT after how he's turned the program around

I think you might be too close to some emotional boosters and losing the forest through the trees
How much would you like to put down on that ?

If he misses the tourney this year …

That is some major goal post change there! You initially stated BU would safe for up to 3 years of missing tourney, but your bet is that he is only truly safe missing once (based upon how your above is stated).

IMO, missing the tourney this year would put BU on major hot seat with major coaching changes required. A second miss, and there is no way that BU is retained (either he walks away on his own or is forced out...can't make top 10 bucks and expect to stick around with multiple misses in a row).

Indy Illini was the one who said he would be getting fired if he missed the tourney this year.

My opinion is that he would get a 3rd season after two misses and I maintain that

Yeaaaa good life lesson is don't make the people with the money angry. He needs to win bigger if he wants to thumb his nose at boosters.
An hour after attending the ILLINI's loss to North Carolina in the 2005 National Championship game in St. Louis, I was sitting in the Illinois host hotel bar with 3 other ILLINI basketball fanatics rehashing what a great season it had been until some very questionable officiating resulted in a heartbreaking 5 point loss. At the table next to us, there were 4 Illinois high roller whiskey drinking alumni from Texas decked out in newly purchased ILLINI clothing and lots of gold chains/big rings etc. to go with their Cowboy hats, bolo ties and boots. The loud topic of conversation was the need to have AD Ron Guenther immediately fire Bruce Weber and hire Billy Gillespie. This was just one hour after a season that ended with a record of 37-2.
The life lesson I learned that night was that you can never satisfy the unreasonable expectations of boosters. You can only appease them until you get fired or otherwise move on.

Groce fired after missing tournament 4 straight years
Weber fired after missing tournament 1 year, and making tournament 2 of past 5 years
Lou Henson fired/retired after missing tournament 1 year, made tournament 3 prior years in row. He was 19-13, 17-11, 19-12. 18-13 in his last 4 years.

Groce and Weber should have been fired sooner

Lou had earned significant equity for building program for ground up and was given more time.

In fact the two are generally inversely related.

I'm out of my league here mathmatically, but there must be some limit to the one end of that inverse relationship - otherwise the potentially greatest basketball coach of all time would be...

What’s notable in all three of those cases was that recruiting was clearly headed in the wrong direction and that’s why those changes were made (Lou’s retirement was technically up to him, but there had been discussions with him for awhile). The records on the court more or less matched the quality level of recruiting.

With Underwood, recruiting hasn’t been at such a high level since Bill Self landed Charlie Villanueva. Retention has obviously been an issue, but aside from one “bad” year where we made the tournament, the results on the court have stellar. Just need to get over that March hurdle, which has historically dogged Illinois since the NCAA Tournament’s origin.

What? You think next years team is better than the one that had two All Americans?
Brad kept saying last year before the season that last years team was the most talent he had. That worked well. I am waiting for him to give me some more hyperbole about this team.

You get some wiggle room early on in your career, but not now. If you underperform two seasons in a row in the post season AND miss the tourney given the talent he has, then that’s enough of a sample size to show that you’re not the coach to help us take another step forward. Missing the tournament hurts recruiting, it hurts NIL potential, and angers the fanbase. We can pay enough to do better and we would. Hopefully we don’t have to find out.

I hope even just getting to RD64 and not winning would be an immediate fire.
Be careful what you wish for. An immediate fire under those circumstances means that Dainja, Goode, Rodgers, Harris, Hansberry and our potential 5 star Morez Johnson all could be transferring and with Shannon, Hawkins, Harmon, Domask and Guerrier all graduating we effectively could be starting from scratch. In a world of NIL and transfers, that might not be as big a problem than in the past for a new head coach like Indy's Sean Miller, but there are no guarantees that any of our current players or assistant coaches would come back nor that we would ever see Morez in the Orange and Blue. There is something to be said about continuity in a program/coaching staff and I am hoping to see our current underclassmen play and develop together for the next few years. If Brad can't succeed in the Tournament with this group and a handful of targeted transfers over the next few years, then he will be gone. But a first round exit next year shouldn't be enough for that to happen.

If you use consensus rankings as HS seniors as the metric, he was undoubtedly correct.

As of the beginning of last season, we had 9 RSCI Top 100 players on the roster (average rank of 74), vs. 6 the preceding year (21-22) (average rank of 65) and 4 the 20-21 season (average rank of 37). Plenty of other issues with that team, but talent wasn't the problem.

100% agree....how much is Tyler Underwood's salary this season? Take away the name and no way he's a D1 high major college coach right now.
You are a FOIA request away from the answer there. Public universities have to disclose that info if asked

How much money do you wanna put on, let's say, 75% of those guys leaving if Underwood is fired?

I wouldn’t say pissed in my cheerios … But the explanations lately regarding decisions … I’m not exactly thrilled with …

Continuing to promote his own kid doesn’t help his case with anyone … Especially the boosters …

It’s the constant stubbornness that infuriates people … Not necessarily just me either …

Like you miss on RayJ … Okay, fine … Stuff happened … Whatever … The refusal to go after ANYONE else when there are good options available is baffling …

Now when the opportunity comes to add 2 more assistants … He promotes his own kid and a guy whose biggest job before coming here was being the video coordinator for the Indiana Fever … And since he’s been here with his great “offensive scheme” … It’s been nothing but 💩 that we’ve scrapped every year … Those are just the facts …

Meanwhile … Nate Oats hired Preston Murphy who’s an elite recruiter and has already landed a kid after being employed only 24 hours … Bryce Drew got the top recruiter at Wyoming to come to GCU for one of his spots … Hurley has Irvin and Irvin obviously got Ace to come there along with Shawn Phillips … Using those 2 new assistant spots to tap in to new connections is a major advantage that Brad refused to take advantage of …

Once again Brad being stubborn and promoting his own kid when he could’ve hired someone like an AAU program director like Ryan Owens like Shrews did and tapped into his connections recruiting wise … Penny tapped into Andy Bormans connections with the NY Rens …

I just don’t like some decisions that are being made the only answer I’m getting is how we didn’t need a PG anyways and that Tyler is better than anyone else we could’ve got … I don’t have anything against Tyler in the role he was in … But when I know for a fact some of the guys that would’ve been interested … That’s frustrating …
Phew, I was like what did I do!? 🤣🤣
