do you think it hasn't always been this way?
Yes, I do think it hasn't always been this way. If it had always been this way then there would have been no incentive to change from the old way to the new. Think about it.

Were bidding wars common? Sure. Were they the norm that all teams and all players participated in? Probably not. Otherwise there'd be no reason to change to the current system.

Not only that, but there used to be penalties in place for such goings on. Surely those repercussions scared away some teams from working under the table. Which would mean it was a smaller market than it is today....ie the current state isn't how it's always been.

Also, I know some of you like wild recruiting stories …

Flory Bidunga’s people told Scheyer they were coming Thursday … They were looking at houses to move there next year and everything … Flagg re classes and they say actually no we’re not coming …

Then they tell Pearl they’re coming to Auburn … Decent NIL deal in place … And as of this morning … Still the plan …

And I got told maybe 10 minutes ago by someone in the Kansas office that it’s a done deal … NIL stepped up big … *cough* Adidas *cough* …

Talk about a wild recruitment … And FWIW, I still think he probably picks Auburn with how crazy this last couple days has been … 😂

Indy - question for you.

Does Illinois not have the resources to battle with these people? Or is it a choice not to?

I have no doubt that these types of scenarios played out like this for top recruits before NIL, but I have my doubts how common they were further down the “food chain.” Maybe I’m wrong about that. But at least back then for the most part once you reeled in a player you had him for his career. Now with the transfer rules, the same player can hold you hostage after each season. As can players further down the bench.

Like a poster said, probably better not to know what goes into a hot dog if you like hot dogs. It was much easier to not know what was behind the curtain or at least not look behind it. Now the curtain has been torn away. I try to divert my eyes, but not easy to do.

I thought ta was the resource for Rez?
Do you think he loves Anderson hundreds of thousands of dollars more than any other assistant coach?

Relationships, location, academics, playing style are all still factors in recruitments, it's just now that cold hard cash can be a trump card. I think there are likely to be kids that say this school is offering me $100k and that one is offering me $110k, I'm taking the more money. But I think more are saying this situation is better, I like it there more, they aren't offering me the most, but this is where I'll be happiest.

Didn’t he commit before NIL? Or atleast before it was huge?

No it was huge when he committed
In November 2021? It just started and I don’t think everyone really knew what it would exactly be yet…especially for sophomore in HS. Don’t get me wrong someone is talented was probably told he’d be taken care of but was that the determining factor?

I could be way off but I think when someone that commits that early is usually due to a relationship with a coach or with the university.

Is there anything preventing high school kids from receiving NIL benefits? If not, I would think it would be more lucrative to commit to a school early and get on the payroll as soon as possible.

not in Misery. legislators there have codified NIL, such that HS kids who have committed (or signed?) are eligible for NIL. that's probably a huge reason that several 5 star prep football players have committed to Miznoz

That’s a great point point.

At that time Illinois HS students could not get NIL… that has since changed but I don’t think Illinois’ coaching staff is going to use some of their salary cap space on a soph in HS. So much can change in 2 years look at JJ Taylor for an example. There was talk of one and done, g league etc as a soph and now he’s going to Memphis lol

There will be more options besides him … Wait till everyone gets back in the states from their summer tours … Lot of rumors flying already …
I'm going to assume this means one of Boo Buie or Santiago Vescovi is going to enter the portal and come to Illinois.

I am basing this off of nothing other than I'd like a veteran guard and Vescovi might be my favorite player to watch in cbb right now.

This was always the case. People are just able to be more open about it now and more recruits are able to benefit from it.
