Maybe for similar reasons that the B1G chose Rutgers... The NY television market likely being high on the list.
I think it’s been discussed here, but my understanding is the NY market has little interest in college athletics, let alone Rutgers.

So you’re telling me that a 5 star kid, that could choose to take an official visit to any school in the country, is choosing to go to Piscataway, New Jersey, to enjoy the process? Idk man.
You can believe what you want...just sharing what I know to be true. I'm not an insider in any way, shape or form, but I have a VERY close connection on this one. He likes Pikiell, but they're not in the top 4 or 5 as of right now. All I'll say is it'll be interesting to see what happens with Juwan after this year.

Illinois Fans: We don't have the NIL to compete with Kansas, etc. for 5*. I say bull!!!!. Something else is going on and that is why we aren't in on 5*s.

Rutgers: we got one for 24, maybe more!
Purdue: we got one for 24 too!
Colorado: we got one for 23!
Iowa State: 23 as well!

Illinois Fans: well, in 2022 our class was ranked in the Top 15!

Texas: we were higher
Arkansas: we were higher too
Tennessee: yep, we were higher

Illinois Fans: but, in 2021, we had 3 four star recruits!

Marquette: so we did we, and they were ranked higher than yours
Colorado: same
Creighton: we had 4!
Florida State: we only had 2, but also had 1 Five star.
Santa Clara: thanks for 1 of those recruits you pulled in!

Underwood is a very good coach. And he has gotten good transfers. And the results are way better than Groce.

BUT, why we aren't doing better at recruiting is beyond me. It is unreal that we don't have a point guard. Mind boggling. And something ain't right. And maybe it is as simple as we have 0.3x as much in NILs as others. I don't know.

So I hope this is a good year, but I expect a 5th place B1G finish because of our defense, we get an 8 seed, and we lose in the first weekend of the tourney.

Hope I'm wrong

Indy, you made a comment the other day that said Illinois does not have the resources to go after the high 5 stars, but how does Rutgers?

Harper is a family connection and Bailey wants to play with Harper and his best friend Jamichael Davis is also coming to Rutgers with him …

Didn’t really have a ton to do with NIL … They’re both gonna get paid but they could’ve got more to go elsewhere …

Each recruitment is different … For many 5 stars we are after … It’s gonna come down to money … In the case of Rutgers and Harper … It really doesn’t … He’s got money, he’s always had money and he’s gonna be a lottery pick no matter where he plays … He also likes Steve (who doesn’t)

Juwan not gonna be there if he’s got a choice to leave my friend … And he’s not been very good at keeping it a secret …

Does any one remember if there was a relative timeline for Mikey Lewis committing? December? Februrary? no clue?

Juwan wants to hop to the pros
Juwan has been very strong recruiter but has only had one good season out of 4. If he has another poor season, combined with his threatening and slapping other coaches I think he is gone.

He inherited a juggernaut from John Beilein (last 3 seasons under JB) and has run it into the ground

That makes no sense in context.

Indy had mentioned Adidas money in the past. What made no sense to me is, why would Adidas choose Rutgers of all the schools they sponsor. They really don't sponsor many, so maybe this is their way of strengthening all their schools. Remember a lot of the illegal payments in the past came from shoe companies, now it's just legal.

The biggest notoriety Adidas schools are Kansas, Indiana, Miami, Louisville, Texas A$M, NC State, GT, Nebraska, Rutgers, Arizona State, Mississippi State. That's about it.
Adidas really took a nose dive in regards to college sponsorship when they lost Notre Dame, Michigan and Tennessee in one calendar year. Regardless what you think of those schools, that’s a lot of revenue to lose.

I wouldn't call an EE and S16 in last three years running a program into the ground.
Howard is a dck, but if Underwood had done that there would be statue of him in front State Farm arena.
