If only the U of I was located in Lexington, KY or Lawrence, KS! Or hell, Manhattan, KS lately!

Well, there are of course other differentiating factors between Kentucky, Kansas and Illinois. K-States recruiting classes look more like ours: mid-to-low top 100 players.

This mini thread caught my attention, especially after our experience with Bill Self and Lon Kruger. Is there evidence that BU is keeping his eyes open for something better? Or, is a premonition? Nagging doubts? Disappointment with the first weekend exits from the Big Dance? Yearly roster churn? I know it's now SOP to say (insert school name here) is my DREAM JOB. But in Underwood's case I kinda believe it.
There were rumors at the time he was interested in the Texas job. That shouldn't be too surprising as that's probably a top 10 job and he has regional connections to that area.

I think I mentioned being a blue blood as being a differentiating factor. If you have half a dozen or more National Championship banners in your facility, it certainly helps...
Our recruiting classes have consistently been rated higher than KSU's over the last few years. Their best two players last year were transfers. (one of them a short guy from a mid-major, who BU would have initially been eviscerated on this board for pursuing.... "You're telling me a 5'8" 160 lb guy who averaged 14 pts & 6 Assists in the Sun Belt is going to make a difference?")

Underwood is a top 10 paid coach in the NCAA. Currently the 7th highest paid coach.

Is Underwood recruiting at a top 10 level? Is he getting the results of a top 10 program?

Too many people look at where we were vs. are we getting the return on investment.
Coach salaries are meaningless, it's monopoly money

Lon Kruger took Florida to championship game
Bill Self took Tulsa to elite 8 and Illini to elite 8 and sweet 16

I wish Brad was that successful. He appears to be better than Weber and Groce. Self is hall of fame level. Based on last 2 seasons I don't think Brad is on anybody's list for blue bloods - KY, Duke, Kansas, UCLA .

Texas job has outsized expectations, big $, but would be lateral move from Illinois.

For me, he was the most fun guy to watch in the tourney this year. Saw him play in a Summer League game, and he was still passing out dimes in the portion I watched.

Nowell has a two way contract in NBA.
Not bad....

you really think he saw such love for basketball in the state while at Western Illinois he knew this was the place for him? I defy anyone to spend a decade in Macomb and come away saying Illinois is a great place to live. Sorry Macomb.

I think it's fair to assume for all coaches, their alma mater and the Blue Bloods would be dream jobs. Obviously if your alma mater is Eastern Illinois, while you would likely love to coach their on your career journey, that's not where you want to end up. Beyond those groups, every coach has their own favorites just like every fan has their own favorites. To me it is also hard to ignore that Underwood left Ok State after one season for more money. So do we think we're immune to getting left for more money? You also need to remember coaches aren't only coaches, they're also husbands and most of us know happy wife, happy life. So sometimes there are non-basketball impacts on coaches decisions on where to coach.

I don't really blame Underwood for seeing what's out there. No one said to what degree he was looking. There's a big difference between reading the wanted ads and calling around seeing if a school wants you. Rumors would seem to indicate it's been a little more than reading the wanted ads, but again, I don't get too much concern for that, as long as it doesn't impact your current job. However, when your performance slips, even a little, and that's paired with coach looking around, that's when you start getting frustration from fans.

UW is the 8th best paid coach in the country at 4.8 million a year, that is going to limit his choices
But as a professor told me once "never turn down a job you have not been offered."

kid has game and a pretty awesome physique for high schooler. will not be locked into playing PF at the next level.

I'm assuming that means you think he's skilled enough he can play the 3?

I like a lot of the recruits and I think Hansberry and Morez will be great but I would like to see him get a 7 footer or something close. It's just nice for a defense to have some rim protection, though you could always add that in the portal.

yes, absolutely. Moseley already has a fantastic mid-range game. his form is good. no reason to think he's not going to be able to expand his range (similar to Hansberry).

Kruger took Florida to the Final Four but lost to Duke in the semifinals.

Brad is one year removed from a Big Ten reg season title and two years from a Big Ten Tourney (and reg season title let's be honest) and #1 seed. I give him the benefit of the doubt for a few more years to take us farther in the NCAA Tourney. Winning the Big Ten is an impressive accomplishment and no joke. He also churned out two All-Americans, one who wasn't that acclaimed coming in.

This is not a Weber situation (yet). He was nicknamed Bubble Bruce for a reason.

Quality 7 footers aren't easy to land, whether out of H.S. or the Portal. I agree that it would be nice to add another big, but I'd be happy to get one in the 6'9 or 6'10 range. This is college basketball. Not many teams, even Natl Champion teams, have a quality 7 footer.

According to 247's college basketball transfer data, there were 22 total transfers at the high-major level of players 7 feet or taller.

If you lower the threshold to 6'11" there were 37 total transfers at the high-major level of that height or taller.

They're out there, if we want them. Dainja has that 7'7" wingspan which makes up for a ton, doesn't matter much he's listed at 6'9" tall.

I agree. Never understood on judging a coach on what amounts to be around 5-10% of the season. Sure we all want to see some tournament success, but single elimination tournaments are always going to be a little random. We hired Groce because he made a Sweet 16 with Ohio and look how that worked out for us. I don't see how anyone could have too many qualms about how Brad has ran this program.
