does this sound like a scrub?

Max Feldman:
MY TAKE

A highly intriguing upside play for Illinois, identifying Butler as a versatile combo-guard with untapped potential. Butler has a craft-based game and has shown the ability to swiftly shift between on and off ball duties. The biggest strength is the 6-5 guard's feel for the game and baskeandtball IQ. Fantastic instincts, sees the floor at a high level and processes defenses briskly. Streaky at times in 3SSB and can be prone to tough shot attempts on the perimeter, but has shown the ability to score at all three levels and is proficient around the rim when he gets there (88th percentile with JGE). The ultra-confident lefty has a pure, quick trigger stroke and scores it in bunches. The Cali product's physical development will be key to getting on the floor as both a defender and as a space creator offensively. At times, he's been forced to rely on his shot-making and pull-up game because he didn't have the second gear to blow by on-ball defenders, but when alongside other handlers who can tilt a defense off the bounce, his offensive game should scale up smoothly in time. Similar to Jakstys, it'll be a process with the weight room playing additional importance, but the potential reward is high for the late-blooming, overlooked guard stocked with craft.
Read something from Sturdy that was also very positive regarding Butler in the last 24 hours. Always like high IQ guys and guys willing to work. I like the pickup.

Little confusing why butler has little love from ranking and other P5 schools.

I'm so over "stars". It's a guide folks. Not an absolute.

Have you been to a 3 Star restaurant and had a 5 Star experience? I have.
Have you been to a 5 Star hotel and had a 3 Star experience? I have.

I give this post 2.5 Stars.

Edit: added .5 Stars for excessive use of "star".

Ya know who puts way more stock into rankings??? The fans…..coaches don’t give a crap about rankings. There are diamonds in the rough every year and highly rated buddy ever year.
Ya know who didn’t put stock into Jase Butler? Every other P5 program in America that saw him play. I hope Jase is fantastic and everybody who passed on him looks foolish but we’re about to trout out a forward at PG because we have failed to develop, recruit, or retain a single viable other option at the position. We just signed a combo guard that nobody else wanted. I think it’s high time we start asking a few questions and stop living in this blind faith bubble.

2023 UConn - 13 players, no 5 stars, and supposed 'glue guys' = National Champs
2022 Kansas - 13 players, no 5 stars, and supposed 'glue guys' = National Champs
2021 Baylor - 13 players, no 5 stars, and supposed 'glue guys' = National Champs
2020 No Tourney
2019 Virginia - 13 players, no 5 stars, and supposed 'glue guys' = National Champs

2023 UConn looked about like our team this year, recruiting-wise. Lot of mid-4-star guys and 3 stars. Their leading scorer wasn't even a top 100 recruit.
2022 Kansas' two best players on the 2022 team were both 3 stars - #145 and #179 recruits in their HS class.
2021 Baylor's main rotation guys were two kids that barely cracked the top 100 and then two other guys that weren't even ranked (not even 3 stars, 0 stars)
2020 No Tourney
2019 Virginia also looked a lot like us, recruiting-wise. Lot of mid-4-stars and they had an unranked guy as 2nd leading scorer.

And no, I'm not guaranteeing a National Championship :ROFLMAO:. Let's not immediately start furiously cranking out that strawman response. All I'm saying: taking Jase Butler is not going to be the end of the world. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Step away from the ledge, people.
Wow I didn't know this. Quite a change in CBB the last few years. I know for a long time the only team to win a title with no 5 stars/Mc AA was 02 Maryland.

I find this interesting because it completely flipped from the opposite pattern that was there the prior 20+ years.
Two big changes, the transfer portal and the extra covid year, I assume play a big part in this.
Players like Remy Martin (Kansas) and Terrance Shannon, or even Tommy Devito, who transferred and got the extra year are a big wrench in the equation. Having experienced 5th year players playing college sports against 18 year old's is a big change that we aren't going to see again.
I think once the extra covid year guys pass through it will revert back some, though with the transfer portal, the ability to plug holes in your team is a big game changer that would limit the importance of high school recruiting.

hope so on Fears, but not holding my breath. am very confident we have a very good package for him and we offer a VVG hoops situation too. thing is, I can see us being bigfoot-ed by am even bigger program. I really don't see proximity to home being important.
Fears will be an Illini. Pops wanted Jeremy Jr. to be in orange & blue too. He’ll play the game for a little longer to pad the resume but it’s happening. And it’s fantastic. He’s REALLY REALLY good. Probably a 2 & out guy. Maybe lottery pick

Who put stock into Giorgi and Andres? There’s plenty of other 2 and 3 stars that we didn’t want that blew up at other places. Recruiting is all about traits, skill sets and how they project. Also a foreword who played PG in high school and for team USA. You’ll also see about 4 other guys play point too. But yup it’s just gonna be Ty!

Well, Blind Faith did have Clapton and Stevie Winwood and I can see how you can get entranced in their musical bubble. Just pull out some Zepplin or the Who and you'll get the perspective you seek.

2023 UConn had no 5 stars but the #7 recruiting class in the country in 2022, and #2 transfer class the year before.

2022 Kansas have to make a correction. Didn’t have a 5 star but had top 10 recruiting classes every year leading up to it.

I’ll give you Baylor and Virginia. Then the next ~20 years before that every single team had a 5 star recruit. So about 20/23 teams that have won the last 23 Nattys have had 5 star recruits.

Not saying Jace is going to be a bad player or that he won’t contribute, he very well might. But clearly, higher ranked recruits equates to more success.

I would like to know how many posters on this board would come to the U of I if they were a four or five star recruit who had many offers? Also assuming you are not an Illinois native.

Jimmy Butler was a 2 star recruit and now dominating the NBA. Trust the process, I'll take a dog any day.

Go ahead and queue up all of the snarky strawman responses that your lone comment must mean the entire forum is now projecting double rainbows into the sky from their :censored: and we all expect Jase Butler to become Jimmy Butler.

Mikey camp was/is very split on Illinois …

It’s a recruitment that kind of took a turn when more and more people got involved … And the kid is not worth the asking price … Per sources …
Didn't we say this about TSJ out of high school? We ended up paying him anyway and could argue was a missing piece on the Ayo/Kofi teams
