Has it been 4 months already? That seems to be about the time between discussions on five star players vs. somewhat less talented players who will stick around and develop.

would it?

it definitely would if he was a Top 30 or even a Top 50 kid. but he's not. he's probably not a Top 100 kid. we're pretty much guessing here, because he hasn't played any AAU ball. not saying he sucks or even that he doesn't have promise...he clearly does. but honestly would you rather have Butler or Gill? for me, that's any easy one (despite Butler being pretty severely under ranked)
If BU wants him it is. I don't care about rankings if BU wants the young man. I look at rankings but I trust the guy making $4,000,000 a year more than a service. Many didn't value a juco transfer like Feliz, Giorgi, or a MVC transfer that just put up 33 vs FAU. Now if BU really doesn't want him in favor of a higher rated player then thats fine too. I want players BU wants on our squad and that want to be here. If Gill isn't that then fine but if we want him given his dads legacy and BU believes in his talent it will suck. I know we can find players either way thought too.

I am not picking at you, but I would suggest looking at the whole conversation here. This isn't the argument being made.

If, and only IF, you have read the whole conversation, then you have missed the point of Joel's response.

No I read it all. He said we would miss him if he were a top 30 or 50 kid but he isn't according to some ranking service so its not as big a deal. Maybe BU feels he is a top 50 kid. I only care what BU thinks not what we maybe guessing at his rating or talent level. If BU wants him that good enough for me. Kendall wasn't top 50 either but Lou wanted him. BU may think he is a top recruit but if if not then thats fine too. I look at ratings too but I listen to and trust BU more. Anyway, ILL..

I will make this brief: word is we asked Gill to commit on his last visit. He declined. Offer still standing, Brad and Co. are recruiting hard elsewhere. Some folks were complaining we were letting Gill go and even "slow playing" him. The negative crowd are chiming in with "we could be sorry for not recruiting him harder." Nothing in this discussion has been about BU's "guessing at his rating or talent level."

I realize that and I certainly would not hold the spot. I am very confident we will find an awesome guard whether its Gill or not and will be fine. It will still sucks if we have a legacy player's son we truly offered playing in another uniform. That doesn't mean we can't be just as good or even better if we land someone else.

JFC, if anyone is not a slave to the ranking services, it's me.

The gist of my posts about Phoenix is that we don't know how good he is. There's a ton of uncertainty. When I said not Top 30/50 it had nothing to do with the rating services...he's not in that tier. Now, could he get there? Sure. But the odds are against him. Which isn't to say he doesn't have value. I think pretty much everyone would gladly take a Trent-level kid. But who knows if he approaches that level. Bottom line: PG isn't KG. Could he blossom like his dad? Sure, but the odds are really stacked against that type of meteoric rise.

Maybe sooner playing time is important. Maybe he doesn't want the yoke of his dad's legacy. Maybe he digs a Lake Michigan view. Who knows?

this is way jumping the gun, but I'd take a super serious look at Caden Pierce as a Domask-like replacement. averaging a double-double (15.8 and 11) for Princeton. no clue if he'll consider transferring. Pierce is a 6' 6" soph, VG defender and athlete, and great decision maker.

We will go big name hunting in the portal more so for this next season-I would expect us to land two big names and maybe 2-3 other solid role players depending on how many scholarship players

Fears re class is also possible still

Does it have anything to do with NIL money? Would not think it is a financial decision but could be pride.

How many 5 stars played in the Final Four last year?
You keep saying last year. That’s not how numbers game or probability/statistics works. Let’s take last 10 years, count percentage of 4 stars in the final four and the percentage of 5 stars and then you will have your answer

In all fairness if you take the last 10 years you would be using mostly data pre-dating NIC and the transfer portal (which would be irrelevant to today's BB world).

Rumor has it he will try and graduate in 3 years and take a shot at a big time program like his brother did going from William and Mary to UNC.

I asked a few days ago and never got anything, but what are the odds older Fears transfers out of MSU with his lack of playing time and the team being a bit of a disappointment this season? If you’re not allowed to say anything I get it!

Someone could throw out "odds" but it's just a guess. Even if someone knew what was going on in his mind right now, there could be injuries and he could play a starring role to end the year.

Not sure how you're reading that, considering Indy explicitly said it shouldn't be a shock that we are NOT putting on the full court press.

All I will say is you better be confident in your eval if you pass on a Illini HOFers son. If he goes elsewhere and has a great career, you'll look pretty stupid.
Being worried about the outcome of a decision making you looking stupid is about the worst possible way to lead any organization.

where did anyone say that staff should think that way? I said that about fans perspective. But the staff better dang well be concerned that they are selecting the right players in all cases.

One thing is becoming pretty clear about Underwood, he has pretty minimal interest in high school recruiting period. He'd much rather have a steady diet of top transfers.

their livelihood depends on it, so I'm guessing they're pretty concerned

disagree. I think he wants a balance. Is prep recruiting deemphasized (from where it was)? Most definitely. And that's the right call, IMO.
