Obviously as an Illinois fan, I'd welcome any 5-star players especially one ranked #1 by 247. But, I'd have to ask, if I take my bias away, why would a top 5 player who is almost definitely a one-and-done choose Illinois?

Our track record when it comes to putting guys in the nba isn't great anytime recently and the only guy we have in the nba ended up getting drafted well below practically all mock drafts. It's a broken record at this point but our NCAA Tournament success since 2005 is nonexistent.

Why would any player like this kid choose us over a Duke or Kentucky who consistently put kids like this in the lottery year after year and give them plenty of playing time? We have great NIL sure, but it definitely isn't close to the top teams in the country.

Rutgers just got two kids in the top 5. And yes one was a brother of a former player, but still. Our NIL is also top 10-15 in the country

One of the worst post in recent history. If Cade Cunningham can go to Oky St. and be on a mess of a team. Then go tops in the draft. Why not on an Illini team that does nothing but win? If you are that elite and 1 and done yes Fighting Illini! 💪 💪
NIL, great coaching, and national recognition on TV 24/7.
We will be players in this race, our NIL program is now stronger than what regular fans realize.

Why not. From your comments I find it hard to think that you are an Illinois fan.

You could say this about 30-40% of the five stars in 2024 who didn't choose blue blood schools. Alabama? Georgia? Miami? RUTGERS?

How much does a number 1 in the class cost?
How much would that effect what we can do in the portal?

Not saying I wouldn't welcome him with open arms, but it does not follow the "get old, stay old" mantra.
Obviously with the covid year going away next season, there will be a lot less transfers, but Domask, Guerrier, Harmon have all performed very well and provide a lot more value, and less drama than a kid whose goal is to make it to the NBA next season.

Expectations and Goals seem to be a lot more aligned with winning and team first among old transfer than young kids.
Maybe that's just my Skyy Clark bias talking?

EDIT: Just watched some of his tape. Absolute stud, 10/10 would do anything to get him here.

I think if you’re #1 in the class you aren’t concerned about the program turning you into an NBA lotto player - realistically he’s on campus 7-9 total months.

I’d assume promises, along with NIL, are important for a one and done.

Does Underwood have that in him?

Seems like a lot of potential disruption if the program isn’t built that way. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds.
