If Marcus Hill was an effective post up guard, he’d have shot far better than 47% on 2s in the MAC. He’d have also averaged far more than 2.6 assists if he was a problem for MAC defenses bc they’d be doubling and he’d be passing out of that booty ball action.

Any player that is under 6’4; and shoots under 30% from 3, I don’t see them as a Big 10 player.

Hill shot 44/29/74 with 2.6 assists/2.6 turnovers. His stats say he’s a high volume chucker that can’t shoot from the outside. There’s nothing in his game or stats that resemble Domask. Domask is far bigger, shot FTs better, and created more plays for others even at SIU. You could space the floor with Domask and hunt mismatches if a smaller guy switched onto him. Hill can’t do any of that

If Hill wasn’t from Rockford I doubt he’d be mentioned at all.
Plus Hill's game isn't really similar to Domask's game at all. Only 8% of his possessions were post ups at only .75 ppp (38th percentile). Plus Hill's game lives at the rim, shooting nearly ten shots at the rim per game (at only 52%), while Domask shot more non-rim 2's then at the rim two's.

finally found a reason to register an account on here. i came here as soon as i saw the tweet about vlad goldin entering the portal. we do not want him. i am from cu but go to fgcu, which in many aspects is a huge rival of fau. numbers dont lie hes got his game down, but he is not a leader in the locker room at all whatsoever. he is a scorer, but clearly not someone who can rally his teammates, as seen in their loss here at fgcu against a team that really didnt have any options for a lot of their players. i know im stupid biased, (illinois 2-0 fau this year (counting football), nerdwestern 1-0, and fgcu 1-0) but fau has been an nil hotspot and nobody going in or coming out of their athletics have any regard for loyalty. if we for some reason cash in on him (which would be $$$$) and grab him over presumably UM, understand that he will be a baller, but likely not a orange bleeding illini, which personally i put as my #1 priority.

So if I'm interpreting the posts here correctly, AJ Storr met with Illinois peeps in Minneapolis before we played Wisconsin? Or am I just naive and/or possessing of a broken sarcasm detector?

I realize this is a message board and there will be all kinds of takes--good and bad. I have to remind myself of this on the daily and remind myself I must temper my expectations of my fellow Illini fans. 99.5% of the opinions (mine included) are not expert opinions.

With that out of the way, I believe BU has done enough at Illinois to warrant a bit of trust from the fanbase. He has continuously been successful at recruiting great players and hiring amazing staff. It should be noted, since turning the program around, our down year was still a 20 win season and we made the NCAA tournament (and not even as a bubble team). It is very early in the portal season and BU accepted a commitment from a player already. That tells me that Underwood and Co. see something in this young man that says, "Yes. There is a place for you here." If the staff wants someone and they go after them, they have earned my trust that that player is worth the roster spot.

I would also like to note that goal posts are being moved. Many in the fanbase complained BU doesn't belong here because he hasn't had success in the tourney. Now he has some success and fans here make statements like (paraphrasing), "well, he's only done it once..." This leads me to believe some fans will never be satisfied. It is a bummer. I believe in BU. He has only brought the University of Illinois Men's Basketball program success and a reason to believe in its future.

Remember this with anyone we land in the portal. Culture and system fit over stats

The staff sees all of the pieces and maps out the fits between multiple pieces that we peons are privy too or can't see that many steps ahead. It also might be the value of getting a guy like Davis early. He checks enough boxes (size, shooting, doesn't need the ball) and leaves other important ones unchecked (NIL cost and starting guarantees) that make it easier for the staff to maneuver in the coming weeks.

Coach May, welcome to the B1G.

I get a kick out of these posts. doubling or tripling his stats is a "bump" If he gets 7rpg he'd be a "major weapon". Well, yeah, 7rpg would have led this year's team. It would have led most teams we've had in the last 15 years outside of Kofi and Meyers.

Hope he stays. I also hope you're not disappointed when a sophomore guard falls short of 7rpg.

Agreed. Thank you.

I think to build what BU wants here, it has to be done with bringing in High School studs, like Rez. Develop and retain as you core starters. Then grab 1 or 2 Portal STUDS to plug and play key rolls. Right now it is just a$$ backwards, retaining 1 or 2 starters and portaling 8 is not going to make for sustainable success. I think we see a big shift in the next year or two for the way, and numbers, the Beloved go portaling. I know the covid extra year has compounded the equation, but BU is going to need names on the practice unis just to know who he is yelling at.

I'm assuming he's UM bound because of May. That said, Vlad's offensive/defensive rating splits are erotic. He's +28 over an average of 100 possessions both last and this season. It's not easy being a big who can't shoot from 3 and being that much a difference maker on both sides.
Borderline? Or full on? IYKYK

Welcome to college basketball in 2024

BU started out coaching JUCO basketball so he’s used to this. In JUCO you recruit a new team virtually every year. But I agree with you that HS recruiting will still be the most sustainable way to be good, bc with HS there is a continuous amount of guys to recruit each year. With the portal, you can’t be sure what will be available each year.

Hopefully once the Covid year is off the books we get back to more traditional college team building. But given how much Underwood likes coaching older guys, we may be more of a portal team for as long as he’s here. You have a pretty high floor when you can pack your roster full of transfer seniors every year.

1. That first line just cracks me up. He’s already built what he wants here. It ain’t 2017
2. We’re literally looking at 4 portal spots out of 15 roster spots…..

Dain is a huge loss. Brad benched him too much this season. He saved our asses a few games this year. Part of the new transfer portal reality. Bets on who’s next to drop? Sinciere? Goode?
