I know this is absolutely pipe dreaming...but since you brought up "best team ever in our illustrious history"...here's one that could be:

Guards: Boswell, Fears, DGL, Kasparas
Wings: AJ, Ty, Tre
4s: Booth, Morez
5s: Tomislav

This is a true title contender and likely, if it comes to fruition, will be Brad's best team.
The secret weapon in that hypothetical is it's next season when super-seniors have disappeared from college basketball. That will be an old and experienced team by 2025-26 standards.

Most of y'all know where I fit on the generally positive vibes spectrum here.

With that said.....if this years team surpasses the 2005 or 1989 team as the greatest in Illini history.....I'll gift a pint of cottage cheese to everyone who likes this post.

For public schools in certain states this effectively makes players employees of the state, right? With all the rights granted by that state for its employees, including pension rules, etc.?
TAs, RAs and other public school funded positions became employees with healthcare benefits in the early 90’s when I was in grad school.

I’d expect no difference here.

On the sleepers prediction…I don’t think it’s crazy to predict we miss the tournament. I do think it’s crazy to say we have a bottom tier roster talent wise because on paper this might be the most talent Brad has ever had. I know others have done this but just to recap-
Boswell - former top 30ish player.
DGL - former top 100 player and at one point a five star
Ty- former top 50ish player
Tre White - former top 30ish player
Booth - former top 60ish player
Morez- Top 30 player
Then throw in Humrichous and Ivisic who may not be stars but will likely out play their rankings, plus a mystery wing that will likely cost $1M plus in NIL.

I’d say we have plenty of talent. Whether it comes together a la KState 2 years ago or it doesn’t a la Arkansas this year is TBD, but we have plenty of talent. And the pieces seem to fit a heck of a lot better than Indiana.

Right now it seems they're just gonna land Kasparas and be pretty much done with it. It's pretty conclusive though...that the idea/expectation over the last few days has been that they'd add 2 more.

What changed? Was it that the price for Kasparas went up or is the staff just thinking it'll get "too many"...?

I love the add (if it happens) for the future. But for this upcoming season...feel like a veteran with a scoring prowess probably could've been more impactful. We'll see though...

If he turns out a quality starter type player this year...I'm all for it. It has been said he'll be more impactful than Egor would've been.

(Talking about Eogr) He looked pretty good in Real Madrid's game. Kinda reminds me of Dybansta but not nearly as athletic nor smooth when it comes to scoring...

It's not crazy to say we'll miss the tourney...

But this might be the most talent Brad has ever had... - Those 2 don't go hand in hand.

If this is Brad's most talented team...there's no way it'll be what Arkansas was.

Plus...was Arkansas really that talented...? Not much about their roster screamed "really talented" imo. Battle - I think he's a stud. Really liked his game. Kinda surprised we didn't go harder after him...

But overall, that team just simply wasn't good...

High school rankings are interesting, but no one at this point should put more stock in those than in actual results.

And you certainly can't have it both ways. Tre White is going to explode, just like his high school ranking suggested and Hummer is going to be great despite his low HS ranking.

Guess it's not only posters on here who are filled with doubt an anxiety.
I want to make sure that I qualify this by saying our roster isn't finished, so it's a bit early to make any prognostications, BUT unless we land a big difference maker/elite scorer and the last two rides don't just go to "nice pieces"....while we're not as bad as that article states, it's a lot more likely that we'll finish in the bottom half of the conference vs the top half.

We just don't have any proven difference makers on the roster that have won on a really good team. You can make the argument for Boswell, but even he was third banana on Arizona last year.

You'd really have to have the O & B goggles on to come up with the argument that this isn't a rebuild.

My issue here is that, to me, we haven't had great direction with what we're trying to do. We're caught in the middle. There has been WAY too much commentary that the elite guys have been "too expensive" for us. That's fine if you've developed really good, reliable players and are supplementing them with the portal.

When you need to replace 8 with a budget that won't allow it to include any true headliners .... it's a tough spot.

On the periphery, if you are completely neutral with no emotional ties....this isn't an overly impressive roster. That doesn't mean we won't be good, but as we sit here today, it's just the truth.

When the smoke from the kitchen finally clears out, the 2024/25 Illini team will be the best team ever in our illustrious history.

I do not understand why some of the pessimism surrounding our team. TSJ is and was a great player, maybe one of the best ever at Illinois, but we will overcome his loss. Even when he missed several games, we didn’t look too shabby.

There’s going to be a culmination of five players on that court, which will make up for his play.

Comparing every position from last year to this year, I can’t believe anyone would think last year‘s team is better. We have a true center and point guard along with the great abilities of the other recruits as well as the incoming one or two mystery players to be determined.

Just sit back and watch the results of a lot of hard work and watch with great pride in next year‘s team.

With another elite addition like Kasparas, Illini could have another deep run and possibly see as many as 5-6 players eventually drafted from the '24-25 team (Kasparas, Ivicic, Humichous, Boswell, Johnson and White) and 9 play professional basketball somewhere (including Booth, Rodgers, DGL). It is possible.

Yes just grab Kasparas and Demin and say 'done' for '24-25. /s Still allows them to add Fears mid-season.
