Why? There’s always been a lot of dollars in NCAA basketball. It’s just now the players get their fair share. And they are the talents that generate all that basketball money.

I see that claim a lot but the current system has nothing to do with giving the players what they deserve. A system cloaked in secrecy that pays based upon donors is not anyone's "fair share". The universities are not paying these kids based on profits(at this point). Getting super wealthy people to give money for no reason other than stroking their own egos is not giving the players their "fair share" or "market value". Its an arbitrary system based upon enough alumni having disposable income/wealth.

Side tangent...do players at small schools get NIL? Why? I doubt there is much revenue generated by basketball at many of these schools...and would it be all that diminished if you took away the players currently playing and replaced them with players who would just like the free tuition? I'm thinking EIU, Bradley, SIU, ISU type schools. Their "fair share" is really probably tuition and that's it. Wins above replacement is being replaced by Dollars above replacement. If the same amount of people will come watch a team of guys on free tuition why start handing money out above that? It becomes pointless and literally a waste of money.

No snark, how exactly does one lock anyone up in a contract-free world? Morez signed an NIL deal and then walked away from it. Brad could have offered $2M a month ago, got a commitment, and that would not have changed things one bit when Miami called him today saying $3M+.
I could be wrong on this, but the scholarship papers (not to be confused with NIL deals or national letters of intent which they did away with) are binding for the year in terms of playing NCAA basketball. I don't think you could sign those and then enter the transfer portal in the same cycle.

And about Ben, he gets WAY, WAY, WAY too much criticism. Will couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn for a large chunk of last season.

Look, it’s up to Brad freaking Underwood, the guy who is getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to get Humrichous off the court when he doesn’t have it. When he is playing well, extend his minutes in that given game.

It’s not that damn hard. I do expect him to be more consistent in year 2.

Sarr's price has apparently gotten over three million. Pushing his agent to stay in the draft as well. This was Brad's call to back off, for a couple of reasons.

1) The money they have they can land a stud plus two "good" level guards.

2) Brad wants the big time add to be older. He wants to have a very veteran team again. Even if it was someone like Ian Jackson, he at least has a year of college under his belt.
Really wanted Sarr but I can get behind Brad's approach on this. Would be a long waiting game and still no guarantee... Plus what if he does end up entering the draft?... Appreciate you giving insight on the situation Lville

If he commits then decommits like Morez nothing the staff can do. But we’ve had serious connections here & i feel like it should’ve been locked up. Honestly I think no Sarr could be the best case scenario for us. I’d rather have an old veteran team that values every possession.

I'd lock in my roster soon or $3mil for Sarr may seem like a steal. The new going rate keeps increasing as the portal season continues. It happens every year.

Losing Sarr sucks as he is going to be a lot of fun to watch. The next level down is more of a commodities market, but as the top guys keep getting bigger and bigger pay days, the 2nd tier guys are going to want more as well.

Look at the NBA and MLB. Lots of guys making 8 figures that are basically bodies on the field.

I can only speak to SIU. And they do get NIL. BTW the coach is being paid $3.6 million over 6 years. It’s on a different scale to be sure, as you noted. But it’s still big business even at that level.

I never heard of em but gotta fire that up when I get home. Locals that succeed in hoops or music or really anything are exciting. One reason I pull for the P-town and C-U players.
I was at Mississippi State and saw Blind Melon more than once working with 2 siblings of still members of that band at a steakhouse in Columbus, Ms.

Do you think illness and injuries had any effect on last season?
100%. He played in games obviously, but they ostensibly lost KJ in the Washington game in January. He was not remotely the same player after that.

Field of 68's Jeff Goodman reported Wednesday that three schools he was "told could be in the mix for Jamir Watkins" were Louisville, Kentucky and Illinois.

sounds like we are gonna be out bid for this one...

Louisville already has spent a ton on guards. Kentucky has been in on everyone so far this year, and have a pretty stacked freshmen and transfer group coming in already... and there are only so many shots available. If Watkins wants a ton of money and to be the clear #1a we are the pick out of the list.

I'd wager Sarr committed a while ago, but we have been unwilling to fully take it/go public. Sarr carries the risk that he stays in the draft process. Why let him publicly announce and prevent you from fielding other transfers?
Username checks out.

Whoever they add needs to be older. Freshmen, unless they are uber elite, aren’t going to take you where you want to go. Experience matters.

I have no idea if it’s realistic or not, but Jamir Watkins is very, very good and he’s played a TON of college ball.

That’s one reason I am on the Miller train. A ton of experience. Having veteran guys leads to more consistency, for the most part.
Wow, finally a post with some proven logic. May not result in a champion, but I like guys who have experienced big time competition on the floor.

After a short time to reflect, a couple quick thoughts:

It stinks missing on Sarr. Think he could have been very valuable defensively, but believe you can replace him on the offensive side. That price tag is just a little whack for a non-proven college player. The fact TSJ was in the 750k range just proves how ridiculous it is and I don't blame the donors for feeling a certain way.

I believe Illinois will have 3 all league guys next season. Kylan is going to take a nice leap into year 2. He is a way better shooter than the numbers showed this season and think some are overlooking that. Tomi is going to be one of the best bigs in the league. I also truly believe the staff will get a go-to scorer on the wing. I think it's inevitable. Jamir would be a solid choice 👍

No sense in getting worked up quite yet, imo. Still have a couple weeks before that fear sets in. That said, get to work staff!
