FWIW - Watkins is asking for Sarr type money …

CBM - Bidding starts at $3.5 million …

Ace Wolf - I’m hearing it’s down to Baylor, Texas, Gonzaga and Illinois …
Miller's narrowed down list is very interesting and actually gives me a bit of confidence in him I didn't think possible. He kept only Tournament teams.

UCLA has two equally inexperienced (possibly even less experienced) ACs as well. They recently landed Donovan Dent, one of the top guys in the portal. USC, who has been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Sarr, also employs the coach's son as an AC. Like Tyler, Michael Musselman has never had a basketball job where his dad wasn't his boss. The same is true for Steven Pearl, who is the son of Bruce "Satan" Pearl at Auburn.

Indiana's new coach has spent the last 3 years using his position to make sure his son makes the most possible NIL money in his time in college, including shutting down his season last year at WVU so he could maintain another year of eligibility. Yet the same people that drag BU seem to think very highly of Darian DeVries.

People seem to think these kinds of things are unique to our program, but it is actually very common in NCAA basketball. Which is probably why JW didn't veto Tyler's hiring from the start.
I don’t know how any of this is even remotely comparable to Illinois’s situation? Are those Assistants causing (allegedly, whether we like it or not) a rift between players and coaches? If the answer is yes, then we can make these comparisons.

That is some Class-A cherry-picking there Gritty. Always thought you were knowledgeable enough to not need to mislead like that.

The essential claim pictured there is sort of threefold

1. Tyler Underwood and Zach Hamer are the power center in the program, they set the tune strategically and operationally
2. Josh Whitman, prominent boosters, and the basketball community at large know this and have long-term lingering negative feelings about how the program is operated because of it
3. Directly resulting from those negative feelings, every recruit and assistant we court is spurning us to go elsewhere.

3 flatly does not not align with the facts, the whole "Josh Whitman is on his last nerve with BU and the relationship may blow up the second an appealing job opens" narrative around 2 has collapsed for good this offseason, and that all leads one to question why this board and really a single poster is basically the entire sourcing we have on 1.

We shouldn't be doomering (yet) about this portal season just in general. But doomering about this portal season because of the all-seeing villainy of Zach Hamer, twirling his mustache behind every dark corner, has reached its expiration date for me as something I find cute and willing to indulge. It's reached the realm of conspiracy theory and I'd really like to stick to basketball.

Watkins: no surprise.

CBM: no thanks.

Ace Wolf: how high did the bidding reach for AM?

That's what I figured. I can't see Illinois winning ANY bidding wars this off season.
At some point, you'd think that if we identify a guy as the ONE that we REALLY want, we'd be able to get him. I understand we can't afford to pay everyone a ridiculous amount of money, but if we aren't able to meet the current market price of ANY of the top tier guys, we're not nearly the program we hope/think we are.

Steven Pearl is actually the Associate Head Coach (higher title than other ACs) and yes, is listed as the "Defensive Coordinator" (Tyler does not have a similar title).

And keep in mind, if the offense is Tyler's, it's been a top-15 offense the past two seasons. So if you're criticizing the hire, you're criticizing it for nepotism, not performance.
Why do people just gloss over the fact that, right or wrong, factual or not factual, the narrative that relationship between the 20 something’s and the team is not good. Who cares about nepotism? Who cares about the results? If the relationship piece is broken, we wont keep kids and sooner or later, the negative recruiting will start.

Would something like this be interesting to folks here? I need to add some columns... probably need to add minutes played & class/eligibility... but eligibility remaining seemed to be difficult to get a definitive answer on for a lot of players

EDIT: Also, I threw this together quickly so corrections are encouraged

We aren’t the only ones who’ve been waiting … But yes he’s long been a guy Brad has wanted …
Of course Brad would want Stojakovic... he's European by birth. 😊

Won't the bidding start at Sarr numbers? Like $2.5M? Does Illinois have any kind of "in" with Stojakovic or his camp?

I'll believe we stand a chance at any of these people once Denzel shows up. Anything less and it seems it can fall apart at a moment's notice...
