Looking at highlights, I like how he plays. Great motor, passes it well, and doesn't shy away from contact. He'll add a lot of energy to our practices.
Not to be critical of a walk-on but in the entire video, he drives/finishes right like three times total and that's being generous

Maybe I misunderstood but also idk why we’d keep a scholarship away from a walk on if we have them available, that makes no sense
Could be a situation where the staff says something along the lines of…“you’re on the team, depending on who we find or who becomes available the rest of the summer will determine whether you’re on scholarship or a PWO”

I like the idea of scouting and recruiting a developmental guy or two each year. If you like their skillset, create a smart plan for how they'll progress, and if they're willing to buy into the process, it's worth the low-cost lottery ticket. And from a fan perspective, you better believe if a guy like Fagbemi or Jason Jakstys comes good, I'll be so excited to cheer them on and buy their NIL gear. College athletics doesn't have to be all mercenaries. There's utility in development and retention.

Agreed. And I think it makes a big difference come summer and fall practice to have guys who know the drills, schemes, etc…..something something culture

He looks strong and solidly built. Great handles, great passer and creative when attacking the rim. With point guards Petrovic and Boswell, I don't see much playing time for him. Not to mention our two other incoming freshmen, who are a lot taller and longer. I can't see why he picked the Illini, with plenty of other schools that are looking for a PG to play significant minutes.
I'm all for players who WANT to be here and that believe in themselves, regardless if others do! I'm all for players who are willing to do the hard work and compete! Proving the doubters wrong is a powerful motivation. I like what I see in this kid. He has the competitiveness of a champion to me, from what I'm seeing. I-L-L

A 4 year scholarship with all of the benefits for a basketball player still costs the program several hundred thousand dollars.

Of course they do... changes nothing though... if we have a scholarship to give a player, we give it to them... how its always worked (unless we absolutely need to keep one available, which has been a thing in year's past, but now you get 15 of them so its no longer an issue)

100%
You give the walk-on a schollie if available, if its not, then they don't get one (but again, now that the # is 15 doubt that happens, idk)

But what's the point of adding two more available scholarships if they'll never be given to anyone?

I'm asking because I don't know, not because I doubt you guys are correct lol
The NCAA got rid of scholarship limits for all sports. So technically if you have the money we could provide full scholarships to everyone of our athletes....no school has the resources to do that though. Example baseball up to 34 from 11.7.

Ok yes, that makes sense then

So one of Fagbemi / AJ Redd will not get a scholarship (have to assume its the new guy, who can maybe earn that after a year, etc)

If what I read here is correct, Fagbemi was originally committed to a D2 school. I doubt he’d change his mind and come to Illinois if a scholarship offer wasn’t on the table. Walk ons generally are already students who try out for the team.

Truman State?? You "doubt" that he'd change his mind? Was he getting a scholarship to play at Truman State...nope.

So maybe he :
1) wants to be at a much better academic school (most likely not going to get paid to play hoops professionally)
2) he is a fan of Illinois basketball and wants to be part of it
3) wants to be a part of B1G / D1 ball, with the chance to participate in the NCAA tourney (if only from the bench)
4) wants to go to bigger school (Truman State only has 3,300 students total) for a better college experience
5) maybe he wants the inside track to a chance (later) to become a D1 scholarship player at Illinois
6) he wants access to some of the top hoops facilities, trainers, coaches in the country to develop his game

There are tons of reasons why he'd "change his mind"

Yes, but in this case he was sought out by the coaching staff. Might be a hard sell to pay a lot more in tuition.

I wonder if it might just be best to get rid of the walk-on concept altogether. We now have a 15-player roster, all of whom could receive a scholarship. In any given year, the bottom 4-5 players aren’t going to receive significant playing time. Those spots should be considered “developmental players” — guys who know they’ll need 3-4 years to see the court. You recruit these players with that in mind, while still targeting upper tier players who may or may not transfer on a year-to-year basis. Walk-ons are generally perceived as guys who will never play more than mop up time — you’re essentially getting what you paid for. But now that you can offer a scholarship you don’t have to reserve the final two spots for guys you know will never be more than practice players.

I like the idea of another PG in case of emergency. Condition of commitment is he agrees not to redshirt.

Ideally he stays at Illinois at least 2 years - gains strength and improves enough to be upper classmen contributor or transfer to smaller program like Nico for playing time.

Decent stats 13 ppg 7 apg 5 rpg for very good Benet team

Plus our 3rd Illinois kid on the roster to go with Jaksys and Tyl. I don't count Ty because he grew up and played most of his HS ball in Michigan.

Wish Adam would have come back for 4th. I can't imagine Gonzaga paid him more $NIL than our offer - guessing agent overplayed his hand.

Ohh for the olden days
