Agree with this 100%. Guys like Sarr risk leaving a mark on their reputation by simply going after the biggest check. They are free to do that, of course,… to each his own - and if money is all that matters to him, then he did the right thing. Others, like AS, place value on things like program, history, player development, strength and conditioning, atmosphere, culture, etc. When it comes to Dame Sarr, you can play the money game but there's something I don't like where it seemed like we discovered him and then he paraded our offer around to draw interest. It really does make sense he'd end up at Kansas, home to big money questionable character players.
We have done a good job of recruiting in the portal, finding players outside the portal (Will & Europeans) and adjusting to the up & down recruitments of kids in the portal, but I would like to be doing better at retention. Getting Boz, Tommi, & Ty back is a solid start this year after the disaster that was last year (yeah you can throw in Hummer/Davis/Jason if it makes you feel better), but hated losing Tre & Morez; I really think the next step is getting outstanding in retention & improving continuity, where you aren't starting with so many gaping holes in the lineup & we don't have to add as many pieces. The staff has done an outstanding job of adjusting to the portal era. This offseason has been a masterclass.
I agree and love our additions. I really feel outsiders are undervalueing Petrovic and Mirkovic much like KJ was. I feel Petrovic is going to be amazing for this team even if he may not be a major NBA prospect. He should make those around him better and provide leadership we may have lacked at times last season. I am as excited to see his impac6 as much as anyone we are adding. The staff has done an outstanding job of adjusting to the portal era. This offseason has been a masterclass.
The question is this: Is Sarr responsible for this or his agent? My inclination is the agent. It was reported Sarr was mismanaged by his agent earlier this week.Agree with this 100%. Underwood and staff or not newbies to this “deal making” and have developed a fairly keen sense of when they are simply being played for a bigger check, and I for one am happy to see them walk away. The power is in ‘knowing when to fold em’ and ideally, having an alternate target. In this case, I think our alternate target is the better option and appears Sarr may have lost money by trying too hard.
I did not bring the topic back into the discussion. I just commented. Im always good. Thank you.Man, mistakes happen. You learn from mistakes. This mistake won't happen again (at Illinois). The victim already had some fun with it, I think we goodie.
Very few teams avoided it better than we did this off-season. Among high major teams, Illinois is currently 13th (45%) in returning minutes from last year. Only 7 teams are over 50%. Purdue is a massive outlier, but I anticipate them being unable to sustain it once this current group (who mostly all came in together as freshmen) leaves. We have done a good job of recruiting in the portal, finding players outside the portal (Will & Europeans) and adjusting to the up & down recruitments of kids in the portal, but I would like to be doing better at retention. To me we did great at putting out the fire, but to be outstanding we need to figure out how to avoid the fire

I have not looked, but I would assume not, given he played 0 minutes. If you include his value, this team is returning well over 50% of anticipated minutes. This has the vibes of two years ago (the continuity). This bodes very well for success.Does 45% include Rodgers? (I don't think it does but can't remember last time I looked at this myself)
Though Ty has not played a single game minute with anyone on this years roster.I have not looked, but I would assume not, given he played 0 minutes. I don't think so. My source was Torvik. I don't think his model uses anything but data from the prior season.Does 45% include Rodgers? (I don't think it does but can't remember last time I looked at this myself)
I am going to guess us not being willing to get as dirty as others in recruiting him had more to do with losing him than the weather.Rainstorm...believe it was Evans...
I'd love to hear Ryan Baker's take. At the time he tweeted something cryptic like "Illinois has a tough decision. " The implication seemed to be that Evans would commit if we dropped Brunson. Groce went for it all.I am going to guess us not being willing to get as dirty as others in recruiting him had more to do with losing him than the weather.
Or the fact that Tomi who is obviously back miss several minutes and games due to mono, the flu, and and ankle injury. That number would be a bit higher. Missing those games will have little if any impact next season.Does 45% include Rodgers? (I don't think it does but can't remember last time I looked at this myself)
This will probably sound like a hot take since Brunson was the national player of the year as a junior but I actually thought Evans was a better college player than Brunson(at least the two years they both played in college).I'd love to hear Ryan Baker's take. Evans would have saved his job for a few more years at least.
I'm guessing because the number was zero. It is never upside down and I'm guessing they glanced at the number thought it was good to go. Not an excuse but only thing I can come up withI posted regarding this fiasco. All on the house stage crew. Sadly.
Last year was hardly a disaster, you must be a youngster if you think last year was disaster for Illinois basketball. We have done a good job of recruiting in the portal, finding players outside the portal (Will & Europeans) and adjusting to the up & down recruitments of kids in the portal, but I would like to be doing better at retention. Sarr yet a high end… NBA expectation… is not going to give the numbers that we see from older players ( the ones that wont go in round one)From what I had read various places, info coming from people who would have some reasonable way of knowing (if only via premium subs to beat writer content, I mean who knows), Sarr's agent raised the sticker price nearly every time Illinois had a conversation with him.
Originally they were talking in the $1.25 to $1.5 M range. Duke got involved. Oregon got involved. Miami got involved. Couple others too. Agent also used the NBA Draft as leverage when he started getting rotation minutes for Barc A team (i.e., we will stay out of the draft if you commit to paying us this number right now, etc etc). At some point his agent was asking nearly $4 M (I also understand we had given up long before the number got there).
Illinois took Andrej, Duke took Coward, Oregon took on Simpkins & Pryor (although they still may be involved, not sure), Miami got Allen & Malovec. Then it's become clearer that Sarr isn't going in this year's draft, he isn't welcome back with Barcelona, so on and so forth.
Given how this seems to have played out, have to imagine his entire camp is in absolute shambles right now lol.
