I wonder how Purdue is able to retain 90% of their non graduating roster every year. Nobody else can do it. Best teams lose 50%, some teams lose 100%.

2023 returned Luke, Brandon, RJ, Coleman
2024 returned Terrance, Brandon Coleman, Luke, Ty, Dain, (Sencire redshirted at season start)
2025 - returned DGL, (Ty redshirted at season start). Crazy we made NCAAs
2026 - returning Kylan, Tomas, Jason, Ben, Jason, Ty (before injury)

I guess this is the new normal until NCAA makes players employees and allows multiyear contracts for play!

So that our third kid in this class thats outside of the top 150...
No guys, you don't understand, you need to save money on some recruits so you can pay the expens- wait, it's all 3-stars? You mean to say the writing actually was on the wall when we signed the first two 3-stars? No way...

Why would you spend all your money on 18 year olds when there’s a transfer portal full of 21 year olds? Not to mention the Euros

Sure, if you're on a budget it makes sense to prioritize. The problem is when you're in a league with unlimited spending, simply having a budget means you're starting the season behind. Like this whole conversation about the Illini is exactly what I hear with the Cubs and their mantra of "smart spending". The fact that we're chasing 3-stars this early tells me the top 10, maybe even the top 20, have left us behind.

Based on what happens this year, I may be done with going all in on this source. I'm not concerned their style of ball translates well into the college game....at least in year one.

Many of those guys are supremely gifted offensively from a scoring standpoint. The bigs can shoot, but aren't necessarily rim protectors and the backcourt can be very skilled and crafty, but again, they lack being able to stay in front of guys. This was an issue last year.

Riley was our best player towards the end of the season. He was an 18 year old. One could put Tomi in that spot, but again.... defensively, it was a struggle at times.

I don't think that we have the money/support to complete with the true high level transfers, but we do with freshmen. With our resources, getting old and staying old is the key, which means, heavy retention. No more roster flips.

This off-season was a good one, but I do think that we could be extremely average defensively, especially in the paint and on the glass. Not a huge fan of our overall athleticism or our physicality. We're going to be a crafty team, who's national commentary is going to start with the team "sneaky" before everything. We're sneaky quick in transition, we sneaky quick defensively, we have sneaky good athleticism, etc. you all get it.

We'll see how it works out. I feel like a lot of 92-88 barn burners are in our future.

But we do spend. We’ve had a top 10’sh paid roster both of the past 2 years. Seems our staff is simply prioritizing spend in the portal and Euros over high school.

Seems a bit lazy to me…

In what way? I would’ve thought the opposite: recruiting all these players overseas requires a ton of extra travel and scouting as opposed to focusing on domestic HS recruits.
Lazy in the sense of completely abandoning conventional recruiting for the current way. I’m hoping this season demonstrates otherwise and we win a bunch.

I just feel Brad gets single focused at times. Probably because I have the same trait to recognize it. lol.

the ability to transfer freely without penalty has changed the recruiting game, big time, as has players getting paid (which, FWIW, I fully support). the numbers of good internationals has increased dramatically, and playing high major D1 is now a very viable path for these guys.

so, perhaps staff has pivoted to a more bang for their buck strategy. certainly makes abundant sense to me

I think we're just seeing innovation in college recruiting due to NIL and advanced player rights. These 19+ y/o xfers and Euro pros who've been playing structured ball longer seem to be more ready-to-play than the 17/18 y/o kids coming from AAU scene. In this vein, I'm thinking about 'abandoning conventional recruiting for the current way' as simply keeping up with the times. There's more ways to get players now, so I think you explore every option available (but yet that, to me, is the opposite of lazy).
