We underwent a dramatic change this year from 17th in tempo to 295th.

Vaaks is a guy that can operate as a PnR ballhandler, as presumably can Coleman, but Keaton Wagler they are not.
My objection was mostly in response to the suggestion we'd move faster because our half court ball movement would suffer with this personnel, which is how I read your comment ("We're going to have to play faster, ball movement in the half court just isn't going to be the same."). Maybe I misinterpreted that.

The Wagler of it aside, the personnel in this presumed lineup has all the makings of a great half court offense. Ability to stretch the defense with shooting, great pick and roll personnel, everyone can pass. This is not a lineup I would expect to go cold every time the defense gets set.

We went slow this year partially because we were so big and didn't have a full court demon like a TSJ or Ayo, but it was also because Wagler and Boswell could just keep plays humming and defenses stretching for the full 30 seconds without being bogged down.
And in these ways next season's personnel isn't really any different.

And the Keaton of it all...I mean yeah, we don't have Keaton Wagler next season. Nobody does. I don't think that means every offense in the country is going to run at a breakneck pace. I agree it's likely our tempo will pick up a bit next season. I'd be shocked if it went back to #17, and I'd be surprised if it went back to where we were in 2024. Under these hypothetical rosters were are retaining a large chunk of a team that got used to playing, with great success, at a slower pace. And the bigger point is that we won't be forced to play at an accelerated tempo. I feel very confident that this as of now hypothetical lineup can score in the half court.

That wouldn't be the core skillset of what we are now creating. We would probably post up more. Tomi in the post, double, kick out, swing, swing, shoot it. Offensive rebound, repeat.
That's a half court offense if I've ever heard one.

I'll also add that one of the reasons our tempo decreased was that the offensive philosophy went all in on matchup hunting. Sometimes it takes time to set those matchups up. There were many offensive possessions that would go, "P-n-r, don't get the switching they wanted, Keaton pass out, pass back to Keaton, repeat the sequence" until they got the matchup they wanted. That's Keaton executing the game plan, not Keaton being Keaton. I don't think that fundamental philisophy is going to be different this upcoming season.

Yep! It's gonna be a problem for them, not us

If Jake stays, I think he begins the season as a starter. Brad trusts him and I think his minutes, at least in the early season, are pretty high. Of course players will fight it out and he may be down to 15 mpg later on which would be a great development. That means the freshman or transfers have eaten into his minutes. But to think he falls out of the rotation after being in the program for 3 years is just flat out fantasy.
There is next to no chance that Jake is starting next year. If we had another playable guard (that we did need) this year, Jake probably wouldn't have played as much as he did.

Not relevant for our recruiting, but a few blast-from-the-past in-state names that are portaling:

Entered, uncommitted:
AJ Casey - Miami-->SLU-->Evansville -->??
JJ Taylor - Memphis-->UCF-->Northern Illinois -->??
James Brown - UNC -->??

Entered, committed:
Dai Dai Ames - Kansas State-->UVA-->Cal-->Tennessee
Cole Certa - Notre Dame-->Clemson
Jaden Schutt - Duke-->Virginia Tech-->Kansas State

Jake always seems like the forgotten guy this time of year, because he doesn't do anything eye-popping. He just shows up, competes his tail off and knocks down open 3's. If he is trying to carve out a role, it's because we are overwhelmingly good.

These freshmen better show up ready to compete. Jake doesn't take plays off and doesn't make mistakes.
Jake knows his role and doesn't make mistakes but has to be a threat from distance to earn PT. Underwood wasn't about to make a change at this point of the year but limiting his minutes in NCAAT was deserved.

Penn 0-2
VCU 1-1
Houston 1-2
Iowa 0-1
Uconn 0-1
2-7 in NCAAT didn't get it done

Ironic....I start my colonoscopy prep on Wednesday.

I predict Illinois Basketball will be more successful with retention than me. (There's a "recruiting is fluid" joke in there somewhere, but I'm not caffeinated or motivated)

Rarely does one encounter such a metaphorical release as is apparently to occur for our fan base by Wednesday evening, and the simultaneous explosive (and I do mean "explosive") material release that you will have been enjoying throughout the day.

The only way past is through, my friend(s). We'll all be much lighter and clean as a whistle on the other side.

A very large cheeseburger was my initial post-(sc)op(e) meal. I can't recall savoring one more than that. You do you.

Ben replacement …

Indy, i know that we need another Mirk back up besides Z or others. I hope we add a transfer like this. That said, i havent seen Jaktys really in 2 years, he was 247 110th 2 years and now he can medical redshirt, be a 3rd year freshman and be cheap. At 6'10 or 11 and more mass of 250lb hopefully by November. Do you know if he was improving before this or on the plan to provide depth and spot minutes for very little if any NIL down the road. I know he isnt expected to next year but when he has played he has done ok, rebounded and not screwed up. Is he getting better like bigs have at Wisconsin? With this blood clot he is still a freshman and isnt skinny anymore.

I love Jake as much as the next guy but he’s not gonna start ahead of Dre, Mirk or Vakks

Non conference will be a gauntlet again, which is good.
Aside from the obvious seeding advantages and the fact that it tests the team early against good competition, it's just so much more interesting to watch than a slate of games against *checks notes* North Florida, North Dakota State, Providence, Chattanooga, Chicago State, UAB, Western Carolina, Yale, UIC, South Dakota (plus Iowa State and Notre Dame). And several of those were not the good teams they have been recently.

Editing my reply. I missed the "Ben replacement" part of your post. Still unsure on this one. We're already 9 deep if we retain all the core pieces from last season, and that's not including Ty or Lee. I'm guessing they're both as good as gone. But if we add Dozic, that's still a 10-deep team. Is Jake Davis no longer needed with the additions we're getting?
I'd see Dozic as more of a backup PF behind Mirkovic, and someone to play minutes at Center if Tomi or Big Z is injured. In my mind, it would not really be a one-for-one positional swap of Dozic for Humrichous. And there will still be minutes and a need for Jake Davis to back up Stojakovic at SF even if the Illini add a player like Dozic.

Especially at the United Center. I want to see a marquis matchup there. No benefit beating teams like UIC handily, but only bad things can happen...checks notes -- 2010.

Close, competitive losses to top competition is good for team development, and wins are just a topping on cake to building out solid resume come March.

Brad's non-conference schedules during his tenure here have been nothing short of elite.

Cruz is a freakin dude! He’d be a darn good pivot if needed.

Doesn’t have the family connection or high major experience but he could make a Lamar Wilkerson-like jump.
Cruz Davis played 37.9 minutes/game for Hofstra this past season. I doubt whether he'd want to come to Illinois and play 25 minutes or less per game and/or come off the bench, earn his minutes. But who knows? Maybe he'd be even better than that.
