I know this room is for chatting and that is what most of you do. But I don’t know why I have to keep repeating myself when I tell you that Blackwell is a done deal. Go Illini.

In a vacuum I wouldn’t mind paying more, but curious of the domino effect on #TheRetention if a new guy comes in getting the biggest bag. Starts to get really expensive, even if resources are deeper this offseason. Hopefully everyone gets their money and we get our hoped starting lineup/roster.
That’s on the staff to manage. Big part of the job these days.

The backup 4 or 5 spot? I see that as a hole that needs to be/should be filled by the Illini. But if Illinois signs Blackwell or another top transfer guard, and no other Illinois players transfer out, all 15 roster spots will be filled, and Illinois will not have room to add another 4/5 position player.
Backup 5: Zvonimir Ivisic
Backup 4: Ty Rodgers
Some folks online have commented that many of the BIGS in the transfer portal will be asking for a lot of money, and many of them wouldn't want to go from playing 30+ minutes/game (and starting in many cases) this past season, to coming off the bench and playing 10-15 minutes/game for Illinois next season. One possible transfer that I'd hope the Illini would consider is 6'10", 235-pound, freshman F Aleksas Bieliauskas (Wisconsin). He's a 20-year-old Lithuanian who averaged 4.9 rebounds, 4.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists this past season, while shooting 43.1% on FGs, including 34.6% on 3-pointers, and 63.3% on FTs for the Badgers. [He played 20.2 MIN/game last season.] I have no idea how much it would cost to add AB. Nor do I know if he'd want to play 15-20 MIN/game (next season) for the Illini. But IF a roster spot opens up for Illinois, I'd at least check in on whether AB would be interested in transferring to Illinois.
🥱 .....

It's just a casual, unaware point of view.

Last year to this year (IF we land Blackwell and the expected retention):

Backcourt: Blackwell and Vaaks > Keaton and Kylan.

Frontcourt: Second year Mirk / Tomi / Z > First year Mirk / Tomi / Z.

Bench: Ty / Jake / Z / Coleman / Morillo > Z / Ben / Jake.

All that WHILE we made the Final 4 last year AND the other top teams will be losing their best players.
So you're saying DRE IS MOVING ON!!!???!!! 😉

In 2023 we lost RayJ Dennis, and wound up better off.

In 2024 we lost AJ Storr and Egor Demin, and wound up much better off.

In 2025 we lost Dame Sarr and Josh Dix, and wound up COLOSALLY better off.

It doesn't take an AI supercomputer to see that we're going to lose John Blackwell, nor should it take one to see how that can benefit us yet again.
We wound up better without RayJ? I recall he had a great year at Baylor and we were forced to play Ty at point, which caused some offensive issues. The staff pivoted incredibly well with their scheme, as they usually do, and we benefited from absolutely nailing the Domask addition, but I don’t see how you can say we were better off without an all conference level PG. That team plus RayJ would’ve been something else (though still would’ve been chewed up by the UConn buzz saw).

any chance that a couple donors that could push us over the top are waiting on confirmation of #theretention to contribute to the last piece?
Pretty sure Wed has already come for them. LOL
