I'm not sure that this guy even profiles as a Big ten QB. He's 6' tall (maybe! they always exaggerate on the high side!); can he even see over our linemen?

He completed less than 60 % of his passes in a non-power 5 league. He was sacked almost 10% of his drop-backs for almost 200 yards in losses (as a running QB?) Looks like a REACH.
I work for a power 5 company and insist that all my recruits are at least 6'0" so they can see over the cubicle walls when they talk to me. Our company has a fantastic women's volleyball team.

Legit question: is he firing his OC if we’re 7-5 cause we go for it on a couple 4th and inches in plus field position for the game?

I doubt it, since the season would have been considered an overall resounding success. But that shouldn't change the calculus. While many will second-guess those two BB decisions, they were only decisions to be made because Petersen's offense had played two entire games that put the team in a position to make a difficult decision when a more competent offense would have obviated any need to do so.

That said, while I'm not by any means upset about letting Petersen go because I trust BB to upgrade at that coordinator spot, I do think there were a lot of roster construction/execution issues that contributed mightily to the offense's difficulties. As with every OC, Petersen's hands were always 100% tied once the ball was snapped.

No flight tracker news or anything on Lunney yet? News yesterday is he was in Champaign.

Have to give BB credit, he is not afraid to end a bad experiment. I did think it was more of a personnel issue at QB but I’m ok with it.

Anyone know if BB was this quick to pull the trigger at other stops?

It was mostly speculation, but Lehman made some good points on a pod today that something seemed to change after the season was over. Possibly they couldn’t get the QB and WR interest in the portal they expected. Possibly Bielema wasn’t hearing the adjustments that he felt were needed to move forward.

I mean, other than other flags, I thought 300 yards rushing at penn st and only scoring 13 points ( or 16?) was a red flag. Even when the offense was great at putting up yards, and having a great game, difficulty scoring.

Petersen was making $750K? Wow. Didn't think it was that much. On the hook for 2 more years? 1.5 mil?

BP was supposed to be improved this season under Peterson's tutelage and guidance, and in an offense more suited to his strengths, but it didn't happen. That's my biggest disappointment. If BP had been just a notch better than his 2019 season, I believe we would've won a couple more games.

I think Coach B ideally wanted Petersen to find a QB with multiple years left so that our incoming freshman can sit and learn for 2 years and compete as a redshirt soph. But all we got was a one year stopgap with the same QB questions coming up in 2023.

Don't know what the language in his contract is for buy out but probably reasonable to think that it would be half his salary. So 750k total, he didn't do something or anything stupid that gets us out of it, but we are playing like big boys again. So money be damned let's win!

This^.

Jason Verduzco was listed as 5'9" and did us proud under center back in the day. I believe he was slightly shorter than that based on my lone encounter with him and my decidedly average stature. Wasn't quick or flashy but he was smart and tough as nails. One of the memorable games I saw in Memorial Stadium was #8 Illinois beating #24 MSU 15-13 in '90. Just a brutal defensive struggle. Jason played the entire game on a bum left knee. After falling behind with 1:40 remaining he drove us down to the 30 in less than a minute to set up the winning field goal. Spartan coach George Perles called him the difference in the game. Money quote from UPI article:

'You would have had to kill me to get me out of that game,' the Antioch, Calif., native said. 'I was staying in that game no mater what. You could have tore my leg off and I would've still been in that game.

I'll take his 5'9"-ish clone any day.
That was Homecoming and I thought Mackovic was taking too much time off the clock. The team was very calm. I was sitting in the East balcony and when we made the field goal the stands were moving a lot, like they might come down.

I may be wrong, but I also thought each team got an unsportsmanlike conduct on the sidelines after a huge hit. Brutal game was right.

I like the NOW approach from Coach...no more 3 years, hoping it works out. Gotta be BOLD and pull the trigger.
I agree when it’s a bad fit. If it is just slow, but there is progress, I am ok with 2 years.

I remember that Drinkwitz at NCSU was able to install most of his offense effectively during a spring practice. The results were night and day. Other cases, (GA Tech) where it was a massive overhaul, they were somewhat effective by Yr 2 and hoping to go next level for Yr 3

Such a great game. Doug Higgins was Beaveresque w/ 5 FGs. It's funny you mention the balcony. I was sitting in the west balcony at that game, around the end zone, the first time I'd ever been on that side of the stadium, and it moved, too. 31 years later I still remember the collective release in the crowd when he nailed that final 48-yarder through the north goal posts. One of the hardest-hitting games I've ever seen. Perhaps my fondest Memorial Stadium memory.

Loved those 2:30 p.m. ABC national TV slots with Keith Jackson and Bob Griese in the booth. Am confident with BB we'll be back to those days soon, my friends.
