The season is long, but I'm not going out of my way to watch any more games this year. I've wasted way too many years watching the same rerun year after year. Illinois football has always been just something to keep me mildly entertained until basketball season. Wish it wasn't that ways, but it's been decades of the same product.

See you here next week.

How is it every time we have to go to an Adidas school we drop the bag. I'm pretty sure that in both basketball and football we should have put in an exemption that we can use different balls, at least on game weeks. They are similar balls but not the same, and it showed with some of those incompletions.
College teams use their own footballs, not the home school's. I definitely saw an Indiana player hoisting a Nike orange and blue swoosh ball after one of our turnovers.

Also, the ball is the last thing we should blame for last night. We didn't work out basic kinks (like not getting taunting penalties) and we were still in it. This game turned on the incorrect TD call in the first half and the fact that our defensive calling went into bend-not-break mode while Indiana rocked a two-minute drill.

While I'm incredibly disappointed, and this was literally a game we gave to Indiana. However, I finally see this program getting ready to turn the corner. In past years, we would have laid an egg here, but this was out game to win - despite bad calls, dropped passes, missed assignments and that 4th and goal 'go for it' decision.

Now, with NIL becoming more and more important, I hope we can get some meaningful $$ pushed toward football, or this is going to be about as good as it gets for us.

Turn the corner ???
IF this program does not get more disciplined AND clean up the stupid penalties we will continue to support a sub .500 team !!!
Look at the schedule. Everyone on here keeps making predictions... TRY to make a realistic one now.

there are few things more disappointing than being an Illini football fan. last night was no exception.

I feel bad for most of the players. Chase Brown is our best running back since Mendenhall

I undertsood why BB went for it on 4th and goal at the 1. Didnt lilke the play call , and I would have kicked the FG there.
The Refs were terrible. I would like them to explain the Hightower incomplete call and the "lateral" call.
When you have replay, the objective is to get the call right, not to justify the original incorrect call

Mad at the refs in this one because they took 1 play away from us thst would've won the game but we did everything we could to make 1 bad call not matter by making a ton of mistakes.

I'm still on the Bielema train but hard not to feel like this one shakes the confidence a little.

I had to make sure I wasn't stuck in time paradox that dropped me back in 2021. I just can't see the Illini trot out there, make the same mistakes in B1G game after B1G game and stay optimistic.

Unlike most here I think going for it on 4th was the right call. A TD in that situation puts us up 8 and firmly in control of the game. If the refs hadn't blown the Hightower TD call and we are up 21-16 going into that situation, we obviously go for the FG. So the blown call had a huge impact on our play call in this situation.

I'm nowhere near as depressed as everyone else seems to be. In spite of the blown calls, dropped passes and TO's we were clearly the best team last night. We are a better team than last year; although the bar is low it's the best team we've had since Zook's last year. Our coaching in all aspects of the game is light years better than anything we've seen in quite some time.

I still maintain that the backwards pass was the dumbest play of the game.
I highly doubt that it was "designed" as a backwards pass but, even it it was, the execution was off. DeVito was ready to throw the ball but Chase wasn't looking yet, and by the time Chase was looking Luke Ford had whiffed on his block and the defender was able to destroy Chase just as the ball arrived.

Well ok, I just assumed it was like basketball, and we used their balls.

You don’t go for a FG in that situation. That would be deflating. But you don’t call a run out of shotgun. They were already stuffing our run down there. Maybe some type of rollout run pass option. But not run up middle out of shotgun. That play never had a chance.
More deflating than getting stuffed and coming away with no points after being first and ten from the 6 yard line I believe? Not to mention giving Indiana a mental lift. And the Illini D once again seeing the offense Gail to score points. I do agree that if you’re gonna go for it, you need a much better play.

I know the “book” likely says go for it, but I’d take the points at that point. A FG puts you up 4, so they need a TD to win. And yes I know that is exactly the scenario they ended up with, a FG there puts them up 4 with 10 minutes left. Could have very well got another FG in the remaining time to where IU then needs TD plus 2 pointer to win.

I know I’m not gonna convince you that should have kicked FG there, but in that situation I would have liked to see them do so. Just my humble opinion given the situation and how Illinois was playing at the time. I will say I was happy for Caleb to hit that late FG. After his first game, a miss there might have really messed with him.

it was not designed to be a lateral and it wasnt. but thats also on TDV to make 100% sure it isnt. It was straight sideways and needs to be at least 1 yard forward to avoid the issue of stupid refs
Luke Ford is really a disappointment in most aspects when on the field. He looks the part walking off the bus, but thats about it.

Its hard knowing you were the better team in just about every aspect of the game , except passing , yet lost. I guess thats better than getting shellacked, but why do I still feel so $hitty ?

I’m still stewing over this one. We’ve improved in a lot of ways. But so much optimism that could have been was lost. We can still have a good season so I’m not quitting yet. Maybe the guys will dig a little deeper now. Thats what I’m clinging to. I think we were feeling pretty good about ourselves after last week. Hopefully they all realize how much work they have yet to do. I dunno. That’s all I got.

Shoulda listened to Vegas Odds.....my wallet hurts now.
Well if you bet Illini at original line you would have won right? Of course for those who didn’t, it was a tough beat.

I was actually shocked it took until page 6 of this thread to see line mentioned. Who knew that Vegas actually knows what they’re doing.

yes, but Vegas doesnt really try to predict the score or the spread,
they just try to predict where they need to put it so 1/2 the people bet on one side and 1/2 on the other. They then collect all the money from the losers and 10% from the winner and they make LOTS of money.

Many computer models have been written to predict these things and some are amazingly correct. And then there are some that are way off.

That has been my thought about Ford for awhile — or at least wonder why everyone seems to love him so as a player. I get that he’s home grown guy and seems like a great guy — all reasons to support him. But keep hearing how he needs to be used more in offense and what an oversight coaches are making. Thing is often times when player isn’t being “used correctly,” it’s more a statement on his abilities rather than coach’s.

i had a gig last night and didn’t get home until 2 am. Sorry to say I made the decision to watch the game. my overall take was that

1) we dominated pretty much every aspect of the game to include penalties, turnovers, poor play calling, and getting hosed by the officials.
2) You can’t win a game against the Holy University the Little Sisters of the Blind when you lose three fumbles.
3) BB re-learned a valuable lesson on the 4th and goal call
4) The O line has some work to do protecting the passer
5) Tommy Devito is not our savior, leading us to the Promised Land

It was sooooo . . . . Illinois

I get that, which is why I’m always surprised when I see posts about spread coming down as if Vegas has reassessed things as far as the quality of the team. No, like you say, they are just reacting to get that balance you mentioned.

I just thought it was amusing how many posts were proclaiming how off the line was — not predicting Illini would win by two TDs or more but actually saying line was way off. I believe one poster actually said line was off by 17 points, that he would bet Illini with them being -14, and that he is rarely wrong. FYI, outside of an annual confidence pool with some friends (where games are picked straight up), I don’t bet on college sports.
