This was simply an improbable embarrasssment. Here we go again, with that old Illini soap opera. A teaser (last year's season) then right back to the same old hapless team. Beckman or Lovie or both. We had 2 yds. rushing and the Hoosiers had 312. I didn't think that was even possible. We got bullied from the start. Does Indiana actually have that much money they can continue to lure elite recruits through the portal? I'll repeat what I said before: Jacas is overrated; On several plays I simply watched him exclusively. Half the time he doesn't DO anything. On one play in particular, an Indiana runner ran right in front of him; he was unblocked and didn't even move. He stands around a lot as if the game just mystifies him. Beliama was in a state of shock from the get-go. His face was probably mirrored by most of us. Lose to USC next week and I can see another long, long season heading straight for the crapper. When does basketball start?

Well, after that performance we won't need to worry about anyone poaching our OC and DC for better positions. But, our HS recruits will be dropping commitments like over-ripe crab apples dropping from a tree.
Only positive is I didn't waste my time watching the game.

Game points:

(1) that was the first Bielema game that reminded me of the Lovie and Beckman era. Just absolutely no answer for anything the other team was doing. Outworked, out coached, just destroyed.
This is exactly how I felt as well. That was an old familiar feeling. Like, sitting in the stands watching Penn State run over the top of us with Zook type of game. I genuinely wondered if this was Bret’s worst game at Illinois. At viginia was bad but this one felt worse.

The only saving grace is that there is a really good chance that Indiana really is that good. And, BB has a tendency to not let these types of losses turn into 2 or 3 or more. Come back and win next week.
Eh. We lost to Minnesota last year after getting buzzsawed by Oregon.

Can’t let Indiana beat us twice.

Our secondary is supposed to huge strength of our team. And most of our studs are out

One thing to realize, we weren’t the #9 team in the country. Really we are probably around the 30th team in the country (and we need to play better to be that). Having an inflated ranking going into the Indiana game really misled us. It should have been unranked Illinois at #19 ( or better) Indiana.

Most likely they will flip the UI and IU rankings this week. They can just unrank in a week but based on how we perform against USC, UI can be unranked.

Indy's OL and DL were just light years better. Their OL consistently gave the QB/WR time to get open and space to set up up in the pocket and make clean throws. Made enough running room for the backs to get some yards. Their DL just absolutely punked our OL. We simply could not block them in any phase of the game.

So Bert's blueprint is set. If you want to be good go out and get better linemen on both sides of the ball.

We will see just how good IU is the rest of the season but they made a statement last night. I got PTSD just watching the whole debacle.

If you want to be good go out and get better OC/DC who can make adjust game plan based on what opposition is throwing at them.
BB has recurited well. Don't blame the players.

Indiana is an elite top 10 level team.
Cig is a great coach.
Mendoza follows up his 19/20 game with a 21/23 game. All of IU’s skill guys ran hard and made plays.

Illinois is a fringe top 25 team.
Bielema is a good coach.

A great team with a great coach at home will usually beat a good team. And Indiana dominated all phases tonight

This was like watching TCU vs Georgia.

IL is soft on defense and really exposed in the backend with the injuries. The passing game should be adjusted to more quick short throws as the OLine/Luke can’t stop the pass rush.

I think Bret has a ceiling at Illinois just like he did at Wisconsin. A good team that is below the great ones.

My biggest problems with yesterday was the lack of toughness and we didn’t look ready to play.

There is no adjustment to gameplan that would change what happened last night. There was a clear talent deficit on display and it starts with the trenches. The OL has been bad all year, and we have returned so many starters there. I think both can be true. We need better coaching to develop the line, but we also need an infusion of better talent too.

Something is clearly broken, and both the coaches and players need to be held accountable. Everything should be on the table moving forward. Altmyer might not survive into November if something doesn't change.

I have to say, this was the biggest waste of a six hour round trip drive of my life.

I will also say, the Indiana game day experience is in a completely different stratosphere than what we have at home games.

The crowd was louder on 2nd down for us when the score was 42-10 than our crowd has been the entire year on any third down. The fans rarely sit down. I hate to say it, but props to them. Our fans need training on how to actually cheer and make the atmosphere like that.
That’s what it was like at Oregon last year
