I forgot to mention that I asked ChatGPT what the worst loss was by a top 10 team vs a non top 10 team. It came up with FSU losing 52-3 vs ND last game.

Relax.

If you didn't see us getting spanked in this one after how we've played the first three games of the season, I don't know what to tell you. The first half versus Duke gave us a glimpse of a significant amount of issues. We're not 53 points worse than Indiana, but as I said pregame, we have holes that they will exploit. Both of our lines have been subpar and given the injuries in the secondary, if our front four couldn't get pressure, it was going to be a long night and unsurprisingly....it was.

Sports are dumb...Soo dumb

Least we can all rest easy knowing the Bears will pick our spirits up tomorrow

so bears give up 52 points last week, and then my illini give up. . . huh. . . espn app not loading. oh well, just usc coming to town next week

Agreed. And perhaps it’s somewhat of coaching problem but it always starts in the trenches, if you don’t have those guys, you can’t be consistently successful. So obvious but often taken for granted. Likewise, they have better players than we do. This incredibly insightful precept will also be relevant at Soldier Field tomorrow. I fortunately got in when Dallas was +1.5.
But this Cowboys blogger liked the Bears draft /s

Ciggy hits the nail here. Obvious issues from an important game two weeks ago and the opposing coach saying, “we just did what they did” and the lack of response is…..a lot of signal.
I pointed this out time, after time, after time, after time to people. That first half against Duke showed glaring weaknesses. They turned it over in the craziest of ways and hey had dropped TD's in the first half. We should have been down 31-13 in the first half versus them. People didn't want to believe that and well.....here you go.

Genuinely don’t know if this or Duke in MSG was worse. Just totally embarrassing to be an Illini right now
This by a longshot. No one was injured against duke - only a humbled ego which followed up winning 3 straight. If all of those guys are back for USC (highly doubtful; especially Patterson), then maybe its a discussion, but I'd stil say this.

That Duke team was absurd talent wise. Indiana will be 10-2 at best.

We’ve been exposed. League play reality hits hard..
I think Duke gave teams the blueprint. Our OL is a sieve. Bring pressure and we got nothing. Gonna be a long season watching defenses shred this "experienced" OL.

This is the life of an Illini fan. Just when you think something is starting to really develop, Lucy pulls the football on us and we end up flat on our backs.

Bert talked about schematic changes, essentially dumbing things down to fit what our guys are capable of. That's a sad realization in year five.

But what I don’t understand is that there are many ways to shore up the edges with extra blockers such as TE/Fullbacks or even extra lineman especially when you know that your linemen are not up to the job.
That was the change in Duke game. Added TE at the edge to block because tackles couldn’t handle them.
Today it seemed penetration was everywhere. Everyone getting beat every play.

maybe for tonight we hold the hot takes and just take the L
I mean the team just lost by 53 points as a top 10 ranked team. Hard to avoid the hot takes after thoroughly underperforming expectations.

The warning signs were there, but if you would have told me we lose by 53 points and only have one garbage time turnover, I would have laughed.

This is as one-sided a beatdown as we have seen in ages, and it is unacceptable given the experience the team returned. We looked like an FCS or low-tier D1 squad tonight.

No spin can be had here. It is one thing to get picked apart in the secondary, but to allow 312 yards rushing really questions the toughness of the team. Sadly, IU could have run the score up and beat us by 70. That is how outmatched we were tonight, and it does not get any easier moving forward.
