Iowa, Iowa State investigating athletes gambling

Slot machines are everywhere. At least they are here in IL. Every bar and restaurant, every convenience store either has them or is trying to find space to get them. I don't get it but I'm not a gambler and wasting time betting on sports games isn't in my DNA either. But just about every sports fan I know under 50 bets on NFL and CFB so not at all surprised that players are now doing it.

I don’t understand your point about energy drinks & Casey’s , and the connection to online sports betting and gaming
Same culture, same behavior - just follow along with what everyone else is doing, everybody does it. Just two other behaviors that part of the culture.

Maybe I'm the only one that observes behaviors.

Is too early or mean to joke about Caitlyn Clark's Hy-Chi addiction.

So I haven't followed college kids gambling but is it illegal for a 20 yr old college BB player to bet? I get the issue with betting on your own games but seriously why can't they bet on Draft kings?

Now I am getting worried about of our house not being in order.
Thankfully Josh has come out frequently and mentioned gambling as a very serious collegiate issue. I think I’ve heard two different Sat Sports Talks with Lauren and Steve Kelly where they interview Josh about this subject; each interview a few months apart. My summation of it, DIA is very closely monitoring this with our athletes.

But (IMO) if a kid is going to do it, they will find a way. DIA can only educate on the penalties/punishments and encourage them to make intelligent choices. Access is very easy (a little too easy if you ask me but I don’t wager on games/stats)

Once the whole Tim Donaghy thing happened it was just a matter of time until players started getting caught up in it.

The new/easier ways to gamble just accelerated the end result.

And I'd also point out how connected these kids are where they may have friends/former teammates on different teams (in different conferences even) where inside information can be shared for a "finders fee".

Going down this rabbit hole can be...immense.

Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike was charged with tampering with records. Prosecutors allege he used someone else's name to place roughly 800 sports bets on FanDuel totaling over $21,000, including two Iowa State football games in the 2021 season in which Uwazurike participated.

Yep, the biggest potential problem is the insider stuff.

Say you're a big NIL guy. You like to bet. You're going to pump your players for info. That's why the off the university books stuff is really a problem.

I'm not sure about other sports, but the NFL has the injury list set up to prevent some of the monkey business. Let's face it, if your star QB isn't going to play, that's huge info. NFL requires reporting on that. NCAA doesn't. So now a player sees Luke go down in practice and texts his friends (NILs as well) and they get bets in before line changes.

So the Iowa and Iowa State problem may provide some impetus for wholesale changes.
