Jalen Coleman-Lands to transfer

The message should be:If you're not happy here then you should move on. Illinois basketball will be fine with or without you. We wish you all the best and let us know if there is anything we can do to help you find a better fit.

None of the returning players on this roster are worth pitching a fit over losing. If you are planning on winning Big 10 titles in a few years I wouldnt lose any sleep. I suspect that this staff will replace whoever transfers just fine. May take a little time but I believe that.

It's not losing the player, it's the manner in which it was done. Underwood and his staff are pissed off about this one, especially at Heirman

I cannot see any system that cannot use an elite shooter. If we knew this would happen, we might've pursued Moore harder.

Hopefully we can fill the roster with bigs.

If you have Jordan and Pippen on your team you can throw Kerr out on the three point line and he will get his shots. They aren't here though. JCL would have gotten some minutes and been fine but he has almost no ability to finish at the rim which is what Underwoods offense thrives on. Wish him wel.

this sucks. was hoping the rumors weren't true. wouldn't be surprised to see him end up averaging 13-15ppg while shooting 40% from 3 on a very good team somewhere (obviously not if he goes to depaul but yea)

He certainly was an elite shooter in the making, but his weak defense negated his great offense a fair amount. I'm very sad he's going, but let's not forget we got scored on a lot because of him.

Could have been any number of things. We saw the drills the staff was running, maybe he was falling behind and knew it: Maybe he was seeing other guys emerge who were going to eat minutes: Maybe Alstork was the final nail.

He's a great shooter, but there are just too many other areas where he struggles. I think we will miss him a little, but not to the extent some may think.

Unless Alstork turns into another Aaron Cosby...sorry I even said it. (Throws salt over shoulder)

JCL

I realize he seems to be a great kid and student but as it is often stated:
"If you cannot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Underwood probably could not guarantee him a starting position and there was going to be a lot of competition for playing time. It also could be that Underwood wanted him to not just shoot, but also dribble, pass, and play defense. What has been the recent success of bball players who have transferred from Illinois?
I wish him good luck except against Illinois. There are obviously players
who want to play at Illinois and are willing to work to earn playing time rather than feel entitled. It is also interesting that his transfer was announced by his father the day after Alstork committed.

Everyone except for Tilmon fits in Underwood's system.
I know you're joking, but not all of us expressing ambivalence about JCL's departure are such self-parodies. I think Tilmon would have been a great fit in Underwood's system, certainly better than any center we have on our roster or have been in the running for in 2016 or 2017.

JCL, on the other hand, I never saw as a great fit. Based on what we have seen to date, he's more of a one-dimensional catch and shoot guy who's not a threat to move with the ball or drive. I'm sure he would have gotten his shots, and it's a loss, but I'm not shocked he didn't feel that his role in the system was worth sticking around for.

The message would be, you don't get to reach out to our players via back channels and or connections from mom and dad, high school coaches ect. to poach players from the University of Illinois.

Nevertheless, for those of you on the Board suddenly concerned about DePaul, here is a reality check: DePaul has not had a winning season since 2007, has averaged less that 2200 in home attendance for over the last 5 years and is making the same mistake of moving into another "off-campus" arena far from campus with no good way to get there and with only 10,000 seats, which hardly qualifies as a major college draw for recruits. Hiring a high school coach who can bring a couple of recruits for the short term is not a long term solution to this mess.

However, I think that it is safe to say that Heirman can forget about Underwood adding him to the ILLINI coaching staff in the future.

The message isn't directly at DePaul. And like you, they don't concern me one bit. But if its ok for DePaul to do it, then Notre Dame will do it, and Kansas will do it. It will be anarchy.

JCL continually got schooled on D. A pretty good shooter but would not call him elite. A good kid and I wish him well wherever he lands (unless it's IU).

Bummed but not surprised given all the recent smoke. I wish him all the best in his future destination. More minutes for the freshmen.

Agree on this. I would call him more streaky than elite. Could carry you for a 2-4 min stretch and then disappear.

It wold be foolish to block him as it has been clear to the staff for quite some time that JCL was thinking about leaving and they obviously could not persuade him otherwise. Josh and Brad will handle this with class, wish him well and not block him. No benefit to handle it otherwise with a quality student-athlete like JCL has been for the orange and blue.

first I've heard of JCL thinking this for "quite some time" though....I just figured it was Alstork invasion that prompted it (although I think it would have been an amazing lineup of 3p potential.)

ooof.... I hope it means more minutes for the youngsters. I also think we should be open to exploring other transfer opportunities. Depth at the wing is obviously key.

whovous and MainelyIllini: Thanks for the info.
Back on page 2, Illiniclub talked about "handlers" whispering in Jalen Coleman-Lands' ear after every game---WHO are THOSE guys?? and why didn't the coaching staff police those guys??

Strange timing on this one. Staff/Underwood have been here almost 2 months.

But Heirman to DePaul was recent and Alstork to CU was recent as well as BU getting some work outs in. Something made him realize that he wasn't going to get the kind of touches he needed.

Sad, but he never was healthy in the offseason to build physically like others had so he played weak. His shot was pretty dang good though.

I don't really care to hear about Heirman being in JCL's ear unless you have proof. Every time something doesn't go our way lately with players this board devolves into whining about tampering with zero evidence to support the allegations. JCL would have fit in this system because elite shooters fit in EVERY system. This loss hurts badly, and there's no way around that. Let's not cut down the character of a kid who up until today was considered a model student athlete. I've never seen comments about him not working hard enough in practice or not buying into coaching until today. We were all thrilled that JCL was both playing for us and representing our university. Let's wish him well wherever he goes and focus on our team because right now it needs a ton of work.
