I think Cubit did an admiral job, though:

#1: it sounds like he's the one who came up with the 2 year contract idea, which would have completely killed the program.

#2: he also gave his son a bit of special treatment, which may be one of the reasons he got fired.

Both valid points:

#1: I am sure he was just trying to look out for his best interests, nothing that anyone else wouldn't try to do. I learned in my last job, the only one looking out for my best interest was me. The administration are the ones that created this entire mess and all they had to do was say "no, you accept the job on our terms or we will need to go our separate ways", but instead they agreed to a two year deal.

#2: This didn't particularly sit well with me either, and to be honest, it has me a little concerned if the Lovie rumors turn out to be truth. Not saying Lovie would do the same thing Bill did, but it could be an elephant in the room. I guess in the grand scheme of things, it was just a small price to pay if these rumors (the Lovie hire) are true and Lovie can get us closer to the promised land, I for one will forgive and forget. :)

I somehow believe that JW will ensure that the assistants salaries are in line with whatever the current norms are.

Water under the bridge. Plus, an Interim AD could not have made this splash and this splash wasn't available then. The stars actually aligned for us. Maybe that can become the new norm.

I don't get the rip on Lovie with the Tampa 2. He had one of the top defenses in the NFL the whole time he was in Chicago. Good defenses with the Rams also.

I think someone already said it, but Bears meatball-dom runs deep, dies hard.

3 people got out of the plane, way too far from the camera to get any distinguishing characteristics. All went into the terminal building.

Plane being towed off, I can't make out the tail #. No sign of any other people. In other words, nothing more to see here, folks.

Edit--thanks Dan. I didn't bother with screen grabs because it's too hard to make out details.

Just saw a tweet saying that lovie wasn't on the plane. Just Whitman and some of his assistants.

Were they high fiving each other or jumping for joy? Perhaps one of them was waving around what looked like it might be a signed contract in their hands? :D

Hmmm. Maybe Whitman flew down yesterday afternoon or evening, flew back this morning?

As a Dolphins fan I'm a little hesitant in Sherman. Left a lot to be desired with his play calling. Didn't always play to his offenses strengths and there wasn't a lot of development. Maybe that's different at the college level but I do have reservations.

I'm also a Dolphins fan but Sherman did some good work with Tannehill in college. Sherman has always been known as a QB developer. And that has to be a great recruiting tool for any top QB.

JW gets off a plane that just came in from TB? Thats good enough for me with all the smoke!

Has there ever been a turnaround of this magnitude in IL sports, ever? Seriously impressive...

I would expect Lovie to come up to C-U at 8 am the morning of the presser.
That would be Mon or Tues is my guess.

Whitman obviously needed to see him in person about some issues. Who knows what that could be.

Quick turnaround? Or all in place before Cubit was ever let go?

From coachingsearch.com:

Fox Sports reports one reason Lovie Smith was interested in the Illinois job was the possibility of bringing two of his sons, Mikal and Matt, who were on his staff in Tampa. Don't be surprised if Smith retains defensive coordinator Mike Phair, who worked under Smith in Tampa in 2014.

Seems there are 3 staff spots taken up already by his sons and Phair.

Lovie was Phair's position coach as a linebacker at Arizona State back in the early 90's. They go way, way back. I would imagine Phair is the DC.

As ever with Lovie, OC is the key spot to get right.

Agreed, I am excited about the new hire, but if the right OC is hired, that will take it to another level.
