Having posted what I just recently posted, I'm still pretty much speechless at this point over today's events. Waiting for JW to do his next step. Could be a week or more from what you guys have been posting. Don't know if I can wait that long. I mean, if JW officially announces LOvie int he next 5 minutes, we will all be asking "Lovie, who's your first 5 star? Tell us, tell us please!!!"

Lovie was as hands off as you could be when in the NFL with the offense fwiw

That's good to know. Maybe its his stoic demeanor on the sidelines. How are we suppose to balance that against JG's theatrics? I'm conflicted already!! sheesh!

I don't know. I find myself having reservations about Lovie. Kind of like Dungy not being able to put an offense together while at Tampa, then letting the offense be themselves while at Indy, I think Lovie is going to have to give up control of the offense. Other than understanding the O schemes at a high level. Whomever he brings in at OC, that OC needs to have the kahones to tell Lovie that he wants to run it his way, and that's the end of it.

Cutler and Grossman had a lot to do with how Lovie is perceived. On the other hand, they've tanked a few careers. It seems Bear fans still admire Lovie. Your point on Dungy is valid. Look what Payton did for him.

I love the potential hire. But I think you guys talking about 5* talent are off your rockers.

Maybe I live in a small bubble, but I don't know many Bears fans who still love Lovie Smith. I am excited though. I think we should be able to at least recruit at the Northwestern level. I hope he finally figures out the offense

I was certainly not on Team Lovie while he was coach of the Bears but that doesn't mean kids who were 8-16 during his tenure didn't love him.

Anyone concerned that this would just be a stepping stone job for Lovie, and that he'll jump at the first opportunity for a better job in the NFL?

As has been said, delighted that him being taken by NFL presumably means he's done well at Illinois.
Only downside is that NFL guys get hired after their season is over. So we could be searching at an odd time again. I'll take that risk, tho.

Whitman and John Holecek played together on the Chargers in 2001. On staff as a HC in waiting?

WOW! Now there is some kind of endorsement if I ever saw one!! Good for you Kramer!! I'm with you!

Whitman has the balls to think big regarding our football program for a change. The small time thinking seems to be over.

Final "test" for me is what the assistant pool will be and what kind of facility upgrades come...

HC: Lovie Smith
DC: Mike Phair
OC: Jeff Tedford

This is my guess for how the staff will shake out.

Looking ahead....

4-3 Defense, top 3 in Big 10.

With a 1st Team All Conference Middle Line-backer.

Offense --- Let's just say, I'll stay optimistic.

With things falling apart at A&M, I wonder if Whitman and the next HC can persuade Aaron Moorehead into joining this new staff.

I'd be all about that. Maybe Holecek as LB coach/Asst DC? Hopefully one more young guy with ties to the program and/or the NFL as a position coach as well.

With the hire we need to upgrade everything if you want to compete and be relevant...asst salary pool and new facilities. Give this hire a real chance with a long term deal that says we are committed. If not we will be looking again in 4 years. With a bad sr class in waiting

He might not be getting 5 stars right off the bat, but every player and coach in Illinois will now listen. We have to start locking up our state and Lovie grabs that attention.

Lovie is a great defensive mind, and it wouldn't be surprising to see that side of the ball upgraded with top talent quickly.

I graduated HS with Aaron and just messaged him encouraging to do just this.
