My cousin's ex-girlfriend's dead dog saw Lovie Smith at Kams 10 minutes ago. Take it for what it's worth.

Maybe we're not talking about the same Lovey.

I think we should pay the assistants a portion of their salary. Especially the ones who moved here.

Whitman said in his press conference that they would "do right" by the assistants being let go.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Lovie pass out at Murphy's last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Maybe we got this wrong. Maybe Lovie is the one making the moves on us. This would be consistent with the leaks and JFW's reticence.

People that aren't feeling the Lovie need to look at this thing big picture. In one move we go from the lowest paid and lowest profile coach in the B1G to probably the third highest paid and third highest profile after Harbaugh and Meyer. The Chicago media that we complain always ignores us will be obsessed with Illini football whichever direction we go in the W-L column. It's also about the caliber of assistant that someone like him can bring in. And donor money. And social media mentions. And rear-ends in the seats. It's a huge game changer even if you hated Lovie as the Bears coach and think his vanilla approach will be a failure here. Worst case scenario, we go from being small-time losers to big-time losers. Considering the place where this program currently stands, that's a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth with two outs down by three.

Wasn't Alvarez's approach to games pretty vanilla?

Must have been after I saw him pull a knife on a bouncer at Legends.

Rivera, Toub, Marinelli, Koetter, and Frazier were all good hires under Lovie with Chicago/Tampa.

Charlie Weis was a coordinator; never a HC before Notre Dame. Big difference there.

Tampa 2 doesn't work in the NFL cause NFL qbs can read a defense. Not too many college qbs can read a defense, and go through their progressions.

I'll agree with recruiting. He needs to keep Hecklinski, maybe Bellamy, and get another strong recruiter.

Unfortunately all of Lovie's better assistants weren't offense oriented. Which they needed.

Charlie Weis is just an example of a big name NFL coach albeit an OC. But we can agree that he sucked at ND.

Tampa 2 didn't work with the ever changing personnel. How much innovation/adaptation did Lovie employ? Very little.

I still like the hire, I'm hoping it's the Lovie that first came to the Bears.

My thoughts:

Notre Dame expected to be competing for a NC every year with Weis or any other HC.

As Illinois fans we would be beyond excited with consistently winning 8-9 games a season and competing for B1G titles at least coming out of the West which now is actually quite winnable.

Iowa - Ferentz
Wisc - Chryst
NW(Ill) - Fitzee
Indiana - Wilson
Minny - Claeys
Neb - Riley
PSU - Franklin
ILL - Lovie

Where would you rank Lovie Smith out of those head coaches?

I am not quite as "this is a home run" on Lovie. But personally would rank Lovie #1 with a couple others real close. On the other division not so much.

Hard to say since he hasn't been a head coach in college, but personally I would take him over any of them.

As far as pure name recognition Lovie is bested by

Meyer, Saban, Harbaugh, Stoops

Anyone else?

We won't be laughed out of any recruits living rooms with Lovie as coach

At least in terms of solely college coaching and results, in the B1G at least, it is Meyer, Harbaugh, and Dantonio and then everyone else.

Zero idea how he translates to the college game but if the rumors are true and we have big money for the assistants, not sure if I like any other staff in the B1G West better than ours.

But getting wayyyyy ahead of ourselves, need to see how this all plays out before making any determinations.

As an NFL coach, 1. As a college coach who knows? ask this question in 10 months. If he gets us over 500 I'll give him a hearty Thumbs Up!

#1, which is why this angst about the OC or his recruiting is pointless.

Lovie Smith will give us a top 5 B1G coach, arguably #1 in the West.

Lovie Smith compared to NFL coaches is middle of the road. This has been clear the past 5+ years or so.

However, middle of the road NFL coaches are in the top tier of CFB.

Would I want him as my NFL coach? No.

Would I want him to coach my bottom of the barrel CFB team. Hell f@&$+%# yes. :shield:

Like Whitman said..."..It's all in the branding for Illinois". You can be in Bugtussle Mississippi or timberfall Oregon...and hear...Yea, I heard of Lovie Smith.

Which is crucial.

The opportunity to recruit nationally will present itself.

Now it may not manifest itself in huge recruiting successes depending on what kind of recruiters we hire and how invested Lovie is, but there is no question this puts Illinois on the map again
