I don't see how any reasonable person can see this, if true, as anything other than a miraculous hire for a program like Illinois. It creates such a huge buzz and brings credibility to a coaching job that hasn't had any in years. I do think Cubit carried himself well but hadn't coached as anything other than an interim yet.

If you go back a read bears articles a number of media members, Kaplan for example, did like lovie's personality. He also coached a team in Chicago that could not get the offense going in 8 years. In those 8 years the media developed opinions about him that have created a bias. Their current opinions are not considering the state of the football program.

Objectively this is great for the school

This couldn't be any better at any more desperate of a time. Think there will be any interest in attending Lovie Smith camps around the midwest?

Instant credibility and recruits from New York to Alaska will know who our head coach is

And back to football. Yes the chicago press has a lot of naysayers. It's amazing how ignorant they are when talking about college athletics. That being said they tend to dwell (understatement) on everything that could be bad about this hire. Well that could happen but a lot of good things can come too. They act like nothing is different. Lovie's offense was bad at Chicago, therefore it will be bad at Illinois. Do they think Lovie hasn't figured out his offense needs to be better? He had a pretty decent offense at TB, so maybe he's figured some things out. I have faith

I've seen a lot more positivity in Chicago media members so far than I have negativity. It's just for some reason Illini fans only notice the Kapmans et al.

Please don't have the press conference tomorrow. I don't want this overshadowed by Peyton. I want this front and center nationally as much as possible.

A. Who cares about Peyton

B. Regardless, Illinois hiring a twice fired free agent NFL coach is not some big national story. That's not to understate the quality of the hire, it just is what it is.

I'm just excited to start building. Let's have the press conference right now, someone wake up Loren Tate.

Agreed it is a blurb nationally but hits Chicago/ St Louis hard regardless. Let's get ball rolling

It'll be ok. Right after Peyton announces his retirement from playing football, he's going to announce he is going into coaching and is signing up to be our new quarterbacks coach. :thumb:

Spot On

Sports writers hate Lovie because he hates sports writers.
1. I listened to ESPN radio and/or AM670 a lot when Boers and Bernstein was a morning show and Lovie Smith was the HC of the Bears. The media/coach relationship slowly evolved into one of disdain on both sides. The media, in efforts to compete with each other over headlines often times, would churn the proverbial muck concerning Bears coverage. Lovie found this to be mere garbage that affected his locker room and showed a real contempt for reporters towards the end. In turn, he was increasingly hammered by the media for both silly (his sideline demeanor/lack of enthusiasm) and legitimate (below average offenses/clock management) reasons. As a listener I took away the fact that what began as a growing lack of trust on both sides turned very personal in the last few years of his tenure. I would expect that Lovie would find C-U coverage reasonable even in the hard times. He will get much grief in Chicago, though.
2. I would take Lovie Smith because I believe it would help recruiting and that is what matters when trying to compete in the Big Ten. The man has a pedigree and gravitas which will drown naysayers in the press. He is wise enough to surround himself with competent coaches and he will run a clean program. Count me "all-in" with Lovie.

Not as much. It was nice we were getting him. But he had just failed at Florida. I looked forward to him because he was supposed to be a good recruiter. But Lovie has been fired and had had a few bumps on the road. I think he has been a more successful coach. Also it was on the pro level.

Seems so quick.

Did they follow the steps requires by the State of Illinois? Adv for X number of days, etc? Considering he is a minority they probably skipped that requirement.

?????????

But, welcome LS. No pressure.
