I don’t have the stomach or heart to watch the post game pressers. Would someone delicately summarize for me? I’m still shocked at what I saw.

Curbelo should know better. The decision making was so poor I’m wondering if whoever mentioned him hitting his head could be on to something.

BUT. I’m actually more upset about Underwood not getting things under control when it started spiraling the last 5 mins or so.

there's a reason brad seemed to let them play. Long term is more important than a non conference game in November. I promise you this team will be a different animal by conference time (maybe even next week with Kofi and Hutch). There's a reason why Brad's teams always struggle a game or two early then peak. Last year we were 9-5 with two All Americans, we will be fine.

Briefly........

talked about .............

fouling in the backcourt
poor execution the last 5 minutes
4 turnovers in last 6 possessions
shot clock violations
unacceptable play by experienced players
and of course....give credit to MU

The presser i found most interesting was by CoHawk.......Made numerous off hand remarks about the calls being made........if we could hear the uncensored remarks by the players I would guess that Bo Boroski was needing to be drawn and quartered...................and I would tend to agree with them if that is what was being said............

Would Kofi have made one point worth of difference? Probably.

But we made up for his absence really well, totally dominant on the glass and decent around the rim. It's those couple of BBV post ups becoming Kofi post ups that probably swing things.

But Marquette is terrible.

We're a double digit loss team, pretty much no chance of avoiding it.

We can't win a game against a good team with options of an out-of-control tilting Belo or a non-PG running the show. Easy pickings.
Overall, this is a horrible take that takes a stupid swipe at 20 year old kid in the 3rd game of a long season.

However, the part about things being Kofi post ups as opposed to non-Kofi post ups is spot on. But I would take it a step further and say that the blocks Marquette had, especially on Curbelo, can directly be tied to the ability to help off their man. If Kofi is there, no blocks.

This does not excuse what was a horrible night for Curbelo. But we probably win that by a minimum of 15 with Kofi.

Last thing I will say about Belo from this game. Ayo averaged 12 shot attempts per game last year. Cousy-winner, First Team AA, current NBA player, best closer in college basketball Ayo. 12. There is literally no situation in which I want Belo taking 18 shot attempts in a game. Zero.

I've said my piece. Onto Cincy. Go Illini!
Ayo took 12 shots with another All-American on the floor. How many would he have taken had Kofi not played? Apples to oranges.

On the shot clock violation down the stretch if Grandison just catches and shoot he is fine He had separation Instead he drove and clock ran out before the shot

I think the worst thing he did all night was, if anyone noticed, about half way through the 2nd half stood there in the paint hands up trying to take a charge. The Marquette player avoided him and missed the layup. He got his own rebound and put it in. Curbelo was still standing there with his hands up trying to make a scene. He could have had that rebound and saved us 2 points, instead he's standing there hands up ignoring the play.

He has got to get that crap out of his head. This is not a circus performance. We're not here to see the most inventive passes that not even his teammates see coming or a weaving worming drive that baffles the crowd. We're not here to see you whine on every play and ignore the action. When your opponent is going the other way, it is not the time to stand there whining. Whine after the play if you must.

I can forgive trying to do too much. It is a problem that needs to be fixed, but at least you're trying to do something good. The theatrics and whining while ignoring the game and leaving your teammates 4 on 5 is unacceptable.
Now THIS, I agree with. They ALLLLLLLL need to SHUT UP and play.
The refs were brutal last night. But those guys will just get worse the more they get jawed at. They needed to put their head down and make the next right play.

They whine and moan, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOO MUCH.

Sorry, had my own personal stream of consciousness there. I hope I don’t get sucked in like I was 10-15 yes ago. I would talk all day on the old IllinBoard forums.

Evergreen post, but if you're about to dump all over our players in public....
Stop It Michael Jordan GIF

You know you don't have to do that, right? And that the wider world's demand for your post-loss take is exactly zero?

Call a friend or start a text chain to vent.

Everyone knows we're a better team than Marquette! Yet they found a way to win last night. And the maturity from our upperclassmen disappeared in the last 5 minutes to close out the game! They are basically coaches on the floor at this point in their careers. I'm disappointed by what I saw in those moments. I was encouraged by the response after giving up the lead to make the big run to take back over by Frazier! Big time player making big time plays! Curbelo's confidence is through the roof and I love that about him! He has to definitely get better with his decision making to be great and reach his true potential.. and be successful! If you're being guarded by more than one player someone is wide open! Find them and get them the ball quickly before the trap! That's what makes you a weapon is the ability to attract so much attention to get your teammates open looks to score! Which in turn gets you open looks when you kill the opponent with open scores for your team. Fouling hurt us and turnovers! Too much leadership to allow that! Holding each other accountable will change that! I think this can help us grow into a championship team if we learn from this! If not it's gonna be a long season! Our entire team needs to build confidence and the first true test we played nervous and scared! Get it out of our system now and just go play like you're capable and beat the brakes off of everybody! Run them out the gym with our depth and trust your teammates! That's what was great about the 05 team! They trusted each other and they balled out! If we get that kind of trust with this team the sky is the limit! Make the smart, easy play! Most efficient play! Killer instinct to destroy teams and keep them put away! Learn to close! I-L-L baby! 🔶🔷💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💯🔥🔥 Let's get it! #EverydayGuys

Tough loss that should’ve been a W.
Made the trip to Fiserv - good place to catch a game, except it’s weird that they seemingly don’t sell food in the upper level, just beer. Loud arena, 2 good fan bases, without any stupid fisticuffs. Hope we don’t wait another 28 years to play again. No reason not to root for Marquette IMO going forward this season and maybe make this loss look like less of the dumpster fire that it was.
Also I N I - think that was still hanging from several posts back.

Forget last night for a moment. Do people on here that want Belo benched actually think this team is going to be competitive against Michigan, Purdue etc. without Belo?

Like it or not, this team's success or failure is going to depend on whether Belo learns his lesson from this game or not. There's not really anyone else on this team that can consistently run the offense. As has been pointed out, BU teams have a tendency to start the season slow. Last season started pretty rough. I wish these teams didn't always need a wake-up call, but for some reason they do. I'm going to avoid pushing the panic button until we have at least a few more games like this, and I suggest you all also do the same. (I also suggest starting to be ok with the possibility this team is a good team but not as good as last year's, just in case)

Nothing like a good dose of life's reality to put a loss in perspective Duke just had a major win over a top ten ranked Kentucky team last week. Yesterday they had two of their players arrested one player arrested for DWI coach K's grandson and the other for interference with an arrest and cohesion against star freshman forward Paola Banchero and junior guard Michael Savarino. Which of the two would you rather a loss you can recover from or a hit of this magnitude to the program, remember we have been there done that!!

I keep reading about people who supposedly want Belo benched. Obviously, I think the issue last night was that he was not pulled from the game at some point to calm down and reset mentally. He was obviously struggling and trying to do too much. A 30 second blow may have helped him relax and get restart. Everyone knows he has potential to be a fantastic player and has shown that ability numerous times in only one season and 3 games. The issue is that the staff did not recognize or feel that a quick trip out of the game might help in my opinion. That, I believe, is what most are trying to say. I'd be shocked if anyone actually thinks a permanent benching is warranted.

Shin/foot are considered the same as far as I can tell.

Admittedly, I didn't know there had to be intent, which is insane because then you're asking the referees to read the minds of the player when they can't even figure out what's going on in their own heads.
Intent definitely matters. It's not hard to tell. This comes up in baseball as well. Yes it's a judgement call, but it's pretty clear when someone uses their leg in an unusual way. The play last night appeared to be him missing with his hand and then it hit off his knee.

Oh, and the shin does count as a kick if there is intent.

Here we go again playing down to the level of competition! WTH was Underwood thinking by constantly putting the ball into the hands of a guy that was playing like he was back home playing a pick-up game of horse. Last season Curbelo flourished in his role coming off the bench, I'm thinking he may best suited in that capacity, I know it's early but I'm not sure he's suited to run the team as a starter.
