This was a coaching loss. You simply cant keep running out 4 guards lineups when your guards are so limited in what they can do .

IF you only have two that can create off the dribble and you want Kofi in the paint then you cant have two guards constantly setting those screens because neither can finish at the rim or handle the ball.

I gotta disagree with some of the comments here. I didn't see a lack of effort..at least not compared to what we've seen in some other games. Just got beat by a team that probably has no business doing so. It happens in college basketball. On to the next one
The thing is though, we were up what 7-8 points for a stretch in the 1st half, Kofi was eating their lunch and we let them get back in it and hang around the rest of the game. The effort has to be consistent and it just is not, especially early in games. Every minute counts, especially in the B10.

Why didn’t DMW take some threes? He gave up the shot to drive. Need to see more of Hawkins. Kofi was getting mauled several times.

Nope. This one is telling.

Opposing coaches will set up to limit Ayo and limit Kofi. It will work until we find one or several other reliable scoring options.
The bad thing is, they didn’t limit kofi. We stopped throwing him the ball. That’s on Brad. We should have forced him the ball. They had no answer.

How many times do they need to be embarrassed and angry? I thought that happened against Northwestern? You can’t keep playing this way and expect to just win because of the number by your name.
I think the NW game might be part of the problem...you can’t fall in love with yourself and your ability to turn it on, just because you’ve done it a couple of times. Until they learn that they can lose to ANYONE in the B1G, they are deluding themselves. Hopefully, this game might finally convince them. This is a 9-4 team that should be 12-1.

Games like tonight where it’d be nice to have another “guy”... Like Austin Hutcherson. Sucks. But we must move on... Life in the B1G

It's not one game though. There are many games this year that we played down to the competition and it didn't bite us in the end. Tonight it did.

And if you want to win a title, “one game” is literally everything. You don’t get a “one game.” I would think any fan who had the goal of winning the Big Ten (why wouldn’t we?!) is somewhat devastated right now, as he or she should be. :(

Wow Curbelo really hurt us tonight.
Ayo just didn’t want the ball tonight you could just see it. The other concern with Ayo is he has turned into a turnover machine. Our defense dropped when Frazier was gone which is concerning. What has happened to Geogi? Demonte’s missed free throws really really hurt us. Seems like we lose to Maryland the same way every time we play them. At the end we always fall apart. The reason for this lose was all mental. :(

The guys scored one more point in the second half as they did in the first half against Northwestern.

Two bad halves against a bad team playing hard is... bad news.

Kofi was getting some foul calls and making the shots. This game had better be a low point for the guards and coaches. I'm not holding my breath. Ayo, Belo, Trent, and Ace have enough talent that the problem of unstrategic distribution will disappear in the next game or even the next few games. This team has elite passers but still doesn't pass the ball well.

They didnt stop throwing Kofi the ball we had 4 guards on the floor and Maryland just matchup zoned us and played Ayo for the drive. How many times are we gonna run out our smallish limited skill guard lineup against teams with multiple 6'5+ skilled players . Marylands smallest starter is 6'5 and we played right into their hands . Scott was all over the floor helping not worried about Damonte for one second because he has no advantage over anyone in their lineup . If you Hawkins at the four now you have size that can actually challenge on the glass against smaller players forcing Scott to stop helping sop much.

It is very notable that Frazier, DMFW, and Giorgi combined for zero points.

It is perhaps more notable that they only missed 7 shots. Curbelo missed 8. Ayo missed 14. Maryland had 7 blocks.

If Belo and Ayo want to be special, they need to recognize their center DOMINATING and get him the ball. Kofi only got 10 official shots tonight (also 5/6 FT), and THAT is the travesty.
Right! Trent, DMFW and Giorgi didn't score, in part, because they didn't get shots.

He cannot get open. He is not fast enough to get open without a guy on him. He cannot score on his own. He is becoming a liability again and thats why we need Cole to get 20 minutes a night

It was partly coaching as well. Kofi not getting the ball for 8 plus minutes at the end is something a coach can correct.

However, it all gets back to not currently having a good third scoring option.

Dear god the doomsday crowd is out. Did I say it was great what happened tonight? No
Was our happy with our effort tonight and in other close games? No

The OP was equating Illini basketball to Illini football and talking about being done to with the team. If you are like that guy then you don’t deserve to be a fan of this team.

If they did that and the triple team started leading to stripped balls, missed shots and charges, you’d be lamenting they kept trying to force it in. It’s hard to play shoulda coulda woulda.
