Agreed.

They used to be more clever than just straight up crass like they were tonight, but that's more or less what the Maryland student section has always been like.

It's nothing personal against Hawkins. They'll hurl vulgarity and nonsense and at someone every game.

The players in a college basketball game should always be safe and the game should be allowed to proceed fairly and undisturbed.

Short of that though, man, forget manners, this ain't supposed to be easy. The way those Maryland crowds would get a rise out of Duke was beautiful and spoke for all of us.

(Of course I personally am always the guy just pulling my hair out with stress and barely making a peep. Do as I say, not as I do.)

Agree with the above. In a one possession game, mistakes like these are magnified. I’d add in the offensive foul on Dainga running down the court as another possession lost due to lack of awareness.
While Clark was generally solid, his going 0-10 against Syracuse took away his aggressiveness, as did the loud home crowd. MM also had a couple lazy reach in fouls I wouldn’t expect from a veteran player.
Very impressed they had the grit to come back. Further evidence the ceiling for this team is very high.
Dain was is a bad spot however Dain didn't shove Scott, he touched him and Scott flopping is why a 230lb or so grown man fell down so easily. I rewound it a few times and Scott flopped. Dain didn't push him like that he was just protecting himself when he was cut off. The refs were ok in the first half but right out of the gate in the second from when Coleman was hacked and no call was called the officiating was pretty crappy. We caught a break on TSJs travel but there were several that went against us. The refs calling games poorly, as well as our players silly fouls must improve in games like this and the Virginia game.

Raph Davis on post game show was adamant that they left Epps open on purpose and also went as far as to say Scott could have contested but was "clearly" indifferent as a defender. However, what I see is Scott pointing at Epps and yelling for someone to pick him up, then started to go contest himself but knew he'd be way too late and thus switched his focus to finding someone to defend/box out.
Total BS on Davis. There is no way you leave someone open on purpose who was shooting 40% from 3 on the season up to this game. Also, he was only 0 for 2 in this game so it's not like it was that awful of a game for him.

It was a sucker play, but it can be simultaneously true that Dain shouldn’t have fallen for it and the refs shouldn’t have called it given how irrelevant it was to the action on the court and how physical the game was. I’m assuming that was the reasoning for the non-call when Hawkins got tossed out of bounds.

That was Melendez and I had the same reaction.
my favorite was the first play of the second half when young karate chopped coleman on the shooting arm from behind, no call...Hummel was laughing at how bad of a no call that was

Also coleman getting two hand shoved out of bounds literally right in front of ht eref and the ref telling him he flopped LOL. That was with less than 2 to go in the game and it was tied (and in bonus)

That's what makes it boring and obvious, but defensively we switch everything and create chaos and force all five opponents into discomfort, at the cost sometimes of "take away this one or two guys".

That said, the transition back to UnderwoodBall is, all things told, going somewhat better than I'd feared. We have the right roster for it which we did not in 2017.
To be fair…this defensive scheme is a lot more restrained/conservative than the Frank Martin-esque approach we saw in 2017. I don’t even know if that is in our playbook now…BUT I’m not seeing all 5 guys :”on-the-line, up-the-line” denial of passing lanes like we did then. I’m not abdicating one approach over another…I’m just saying it’s different.

( I know we’re young and all…but honestly it looks like at times we have a couple guys defending one way and a couple more defending another.) Shannon is often way up high in deny. Hawkins is fronting the post…both like you would do if you were playing full-on, balls-to-the-wall, Undy ‘17.

And, then let’s say, RJ & the other guys are usually doing a more standard, sloughing, token pressure, type thing. They can’t both be right? Amirite?

(Again, we’re just young. It’s early; and we’re not all on the same page…I guess?)

Our press is a run and jump…which is an aggressive press but still more conservative than some schemes. Ordinarily, a run and jump looks to turn and trap sideline. I almost think we’re looking to spring the trap at other opportune times…any uncontrolled dribble maybe? Not sure what
he’s having them do there.

But really all my rambling is neither here nor there…the thing that sticks with me most is those very annoying times our transition defense simply failed to stop the ball!! Not good. Overall our defense was pretty darn sloppy. We tightened up in the end. But there was WAY too many lapses.

Special SHOUT OUT TO SKYY AND COHAWK. My Grandson and I were at the Maryland game, got there early and they let us down near the court. In the stands, but right next to the court. Skyy came running over, (we both had Orange on) and talked to us and when my Grandson asked for a pic with him, he said Absolutely!!! The COHAWK saw and came running over too and had his pic taken with my Grandson. These guys didn't have to do this, but wow, did they make our day, and these are the types of players I believe we have. Just amazing!
