Michigan 19, Illinois 17 Postgame

#76
I hear you but we've got let it slide and buck up. The program is making huge strides much earlier than I expected. That they were so competitive today on the road against #3 even with all the injuries we've suffered on both sides of the ball is remarkable.

I'll re-post the blurb from the end of the MGoBlog analysis of our offense earlier in the week. This is what we need to focus on IMO. That and hanging 50 on Northwestern next week, with Chase racking up 180 yards.

Watching Illinois this week I found myself believing even more in Bert's project in Champaign, despite already being this site's resident Bert believer to begin with. They don't quite have the ideal horses up front yet- the run blocking was just alright and Brown does quite a bit of work to help make the run offense effective- but the concepts are there. Bielema and OC Barry Lunney's combo is a match made in heaven and if they can begin to build a more vintage Bielema OL, and perhaps pair it with a slightly more athletic QB who can throw a bit deeper down the field, this could be a really exciting offense. For now, it's limited in what it can do, but there is a future here.
My feelings are completely impacted by the fact we !!!! the bed the last 2 weeks. This outcome in a vacuum is great, but unfortunately I'm aware of the full context

Forget all the questionable calls by the refs (bad spot on IW, PIs, the catch at the end of the game that was reviewed, their defense mimicking our snap count to get a false start on 4th and 1, their pick play, their illegal man down field on 2 big screens, the phantom hold call). I think I got the major ones

The 2 plays that stand out in my mind is one play where Tommy had to dive on the ball and end a drive. The other was when the same thing happened to scUM on 3rd down but turned it into a first down

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet but the fact that the last pass completion wasn’t overturned didn’t just cost the Illini 5 yards. It cost about 25 seconds and a stopped clock. That is a world of time taken away by the refs inability to call the obvious. 35 seconds and a time out is a little different than 9 seconds and a timeout. Just pissed right now.

I wish lunney would coach the team to try to win instead of trying not to lose. His play calling in game type situations is horrible. One first down would have secured the win and he runs two plays basically up the middle and a quarterback keeper. I feel sorry for the players.

I agree we should have played to win at the end. 3 min left with the wind in your face you are not going to get bailed out by a long punt to force them to go 75 yds for the FG. Throw the damn ball 3 times and let the chips fall where they may. 3 runs and a 30 yd punt pretty much handed them the game. On to NW and let's beat the Kitties for an 8-4 season and a NYW bowl game. That would be a fantastic 2nd season for this staff regardless of some of the disappointments.

I am sorry to say this. The coaches played not to lose on the drive with 3+ minutes to go NOT TO WIN! The refs called a pass interference on Witherspoon for grabbing the arm but refused to call pass interference on Michigan for the very same play earlier in the 4th quarter that stopped a drive. Michigan got the benefit of every call! It is hard to beat a #3 ranked team when you are playing against Michigan and the refs too!!

Paducah, Ky
Was the scUM qb1 down on the fumbled snap ??
Is it a completed pass when the nose of the football hits the ground first ??
Was that a PI on Devin W. or just great D ??

There are many more instances of inept officials this season , but sure seemed like the referee got a call from up above to not let the Illini win this game and spoil the much anticipated high TV ratings and ad revenue for next week.......

I hate scUM and I hate the hierarchy that paves the way for them like no other team in the B1G............First it was mr. coward and his refusing to play games and now , like many other Illini -scUM games , idiot refs have too much say into a game's outcome.........

BB just said this game got robbed from our soul on the radio interview..............................I concur.....................
commented on the pick play by scUM recievers that should have been a PI on scUM.......said we will review film and said we would send paperwork in to league officials......

We played our hearts out and it kills me to have some hayseed buffoons have no idea oon what the rules are or refusing to call it the right way.....

We have had at least 3-4 TD passes flagged for that same pick play that scUM executed........SO sad .............It really really is .......................

We Illini fans have short memories and get spoiled easily. This is only Bielema's 2nd year and we have been competitive in every game. Sure there have been disappointments but and games we wish we would have one but I am thrilled with the progress we have made. Shoot, we just got beat by 2 points to the number 3 team in the country who was favored by 18 points or more. It's really easy to second guess what we should have done while sitting in our easy chairs...I for one salute the effort our team made today.

Horrible 4th quarter implosion.
1. Big shout out and thank you to the refs for calling a fair and fun to watch game (suck it crew that officiated the Purdue game - this is how good refs do their job).
2. Gratz to Michigan. It was a fun game to watch. Great to be back at the Big House.
3. Our offensive play calling in the 4th qtr was... offensive. What a dog crap job. Sitting with my friends I actually called two series ahead of time... long pass to put us 2nd and long, crap run play to lead to 3rd and long, behind the chains, 4th down punt to give Mich the ball near the 50. Then I prognosticated, sarcastically, three stupid Chase Brown runs to the left side. Shame. SHAME.

I was fully prepared to lose this game with dignity and our coaching staff took that away from in the second half of the fourth quarter. And how does the same guy on the same route get open two plays in a row? Went in playing with house money and no realy hope, they gave me hope, and they snatched it away by not even trying to win in the latter minutes of the game. That just tastes BITTER. Overall I guess great effort.

I am frustrated with our offensive play calling in crucial situations and in the Red Zone this year

However. When you have one of the best defense a great RB I understand the thought process

Last year BB didn’t go for it on 4th and short because our kicking game was awesome

But we are too predictable and we don’t have a line who can consistently drive another good line back off the line

He mentioned "a lot of pick plays" that will be sent in to the B1G office.

Very proud of our guys. Battled big time. Heartbreaking. Finish strong against NU next weekend.

We could easily be 11-0. Amazing thought right there
I’d love to know how many calls we send to the Big Ten office. At some point I wonder if they start tuning it out. “Here’s Illinois complaining about something again…” Whatever we’re doing, it doesn’t seem to be working.

The non-call on the 4th down with an official staring right at it when we are literally one play away from winning was the most egregious to me.
