Honestly I'm wondering how the NCAA tournamant is even gonna happen. What are they gonna do when teams inevitably get COVID cases mid-tournamant? Just automatically disqualify them?
pretty sure it's going to be a bubble environment like the NHL playoffs last summer, and they had zero problems

From what I can find they have had no positive cases in the BB program since August. It’s a decision to give them the best chance to win when they do play imo. I’m not sure who is calling the shots. The players petitioned to be able to practice this week and were denied.

Why are teams cancelling games if nobody on the team is sick?

That's exactly what they're going to do. The NCAA tournament will be fine. They'll be on lockdown and it will be played without a problem. It's the scheduling leading up to it that's going to get messy. Iowa is making a point to jam all their games in(3 games in 6 days), as is Penn State... then you have Michigan, who doesn't seem to have the same level of urgency.

What it all boils down to for me is healthy vs prepared. If the team is unhealthy because of COVID, I fully accept that the game should be postponed or even canceled. If a team is unprepared because they have been on pause for a while, I can't accept that. As a D1 athlete, you should be able to maintain a level of conditioning on your own that would prevent injury and as a team, you're able to meet via Zoom or other methods to learn scouting reports and such. Is it tough? Yeah, but welcome to life.

Agree 100%. Not sure that the Big Ten has the guts to do it, but they should find a line to draw between health and convenience and issue forfeits. We all have to be grateful that we have a season, we have to be sensitive to illness, while at the same time, you have to put your foot down when you're using the time for a competitive advantage. They don't want to play Illinois, then Wisconsin coming right off of this layoff. While I sympathize...there are teams that got cleared and just played. This just doesn't sit well with me.

If they can't stick to the rules and quarantine why aren't these forfeits? It's total crap for programs like Ohio St in football and Michigan in bball to be rewarded for screwing up and not playing games.

It’s scUM you would expect them to have the decency to do what every other program has done (see MSU and Neb), nope they are elite and they just don’t have to. The only way to address this is for them to fall in the Net and Kenpalm to penalize their unwillingness to play any games.

The situation is similar to tOSU in football, but not really. tOSU was clearly the best football team in the BIG, scUM in basketball is probably one of several teams who are similar. I still don’t believe they are better than Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin or tOSU, but we will never know because they won’t play them.

I watched the Bigger Ten podcast with Steve Deace on YouTube last night and he explained what was going on. Apparently an athlete in a non-revenue sport brought back the new strain of Covid from the U.K. several weeks ago. State health officials made a "strong" suggestion that the Michigan athletic department shut everything down for a period of time. Although not an order, the administration went ahead and did that probably to cover themselves in case anyone else was infected and could potentially file a lawsuit. So all athletics have been shut down for two weeks with no practice or workouts. Apparently athletes can run outside in pairs together, but that's it. There have been no other positive tests. So Michigan is basically going to have a mini-camp of several days to get conditioning up to par and get ready to play again.

Seriously? A tab bit offensive.
Nothing offensive. The younger fans wouldn't hate how it was added because it's been around for over 20 years. I'm an older fan. I think I went to my first Illini game in 1979 or 1980. I always liked the tournament. To me, it's no different than the NCAA tourney. Instead of going by rankings and standings, and declaring someone the best, they have to beat the best to be the best.

Seriously. In a normal year, with fans, I think the conference tournament is one of the most underrated parts of the season, and I actually get a little annoyed with older fans talking about how they hate how it was added. I attended it for the first time two years ago at the United Center when we got absolutely shellacked by Iowa, and in SPITE of that I had an absolutely amazing time. The atmosphere and setup completely exceeded my expectations, and I have heard Indianapolis does it even better. As an Illini fan AND Chicagoan, I always want it here for the homecourt advantage, but my sister lives in Indianapolis and their downtown setup is truly remarkable for a thing like this.

With that said, if there aren't going to be fans and you have games to make up ... why not? There might be a team or two that suffers who could have made a run and snuck into the NCAAs with the auto bid (MSU?) or gotten just enough work in to squeeze in as an at-large (IU?), but giving up that chance would be better for the conference than an Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State, Wisconsin, etc. catching COVID and having their NCAA runs in jeopardy.

Honestly, what we SHOULD do is just move absolutely everything back until conferences can get their full schedules made up AND play their conference tournaments, perhaps having April and May Madness. I know that won't happen for TV reasons, but it's a shame. Knock on wood and all, but I don't think COVID is going to get markedly worse (an opinion deeply held and shared by my COVID nurse girlfriend and roommate) as people continue to get vaccinated, and from a completely logical perspective it is a no-brainer. Money talks, though.
If you had an amazing time even though we were shellacked by Iowa, then us "older fans" may question your mental state.

And the 1998-99 team as an 11 seed lost to MSU in the final. That team ran out of steam, too, after a valliant effort. One of the best 14-18 teams I've ever watched! Check out the roster. Harbinger. Lon, we hardly knew ye.

Note that officially at this time the IL @ Mich game is still a go-

Well hopefully this game is still played. If so, sorry for starting this whole thing and unnecessarily wasting everyone's time.

I saw something on Twitter and just automatically assumed it was 100% accurate. Not sure what else I could have done differently.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. MSU has no worries about it then I suppose. Of course Michigan is a medical school, so they would probably be more apt to take more precautions.
The new strain was found in the Michigan athletic department (not men's basketball), so the department was advised to shut down for 2 weeks. It's not a state of Michigan thing that would affect MSU

Was a good item to post, certainly seems like something's up behind the scenes. Go Illini

After their pause, PSU aggressively rescheduled games to make sure they happened. After their pause, MSU came back and started playing again as soon as possible, and they have been ridiculed for their lack of competitiveness (which might be partially due to that pause). But they're making sure the games happen.

Every other team in the league has demonstrated a goodwill effort to make the season happen and to minimize postponed and canceled games. If Michigan tries to break ranks on this, the commissioner needs to step in. Michigan cannot unilaterally decide to not play (for non-health reasons). If they pause, they are forcing other teams to pause (for non-health reasons). That's pretty selfish.

Anybody with a first name of "Fess" is a hero in my book: Fess Parker, aka Davy Crockett, for instance. Does this age me even more better? Great (but you know you're old when you mention your actual age).

P.S. I'm a bit less than 100 years old

And what is Fess H doing now? Hope he's doing well.

This is my big gripe too. If a team can't play a game because they didn't follow protocol and someone tested positive it should be a forfeit, not a reschedule.

Is there any indication that any of this is due to the two teams you mentioned screwing up? I agree that if that is the cause, they should be held to account for it, but I haven't seen anything indicating that is the case. At least with Michigan basketball, this appears to be the case of an athlete in a different program bringing one of the more virulent strains to the department so they shut down out of an abundance of caution. I know at least some of the games OSU didn't play were due to the other team (though not all).

I don't say this very often, but I love what the NFL did. The Broncos had to play a game without any active QBs because their QB group had flouted protocols and ended up exposed and in quarantine. That's on them.

I don't want to beat a tired, unconditioned, questionable scUM team. I want them at their very best. Zero excuses. Throw down.

Oh and also...Muck Fichigan.
