Not saying I'm correct here - but in real time, I assumed Brad was just getting Morez a breather and protecting him from picking up a foul before the under 16 timeout. He took him out when MSU had possession around the 17:30 mark, right? And he came back in after the under 16 TO?

This was the sequence where I said to myself we are not going to win this game. Another missed open 3 from Ben and then KJ without hesitation chucked a contested corner three with 25 on the shot clock rather then passing the ball to a wide open Tomi in the post where Tomi had a mismatched on Fears with a perfect box out for a open layup/dunk. One of many sequences where the team needed to get back to attacking inside out. Frustrating.

It's not the DIA that messed up. It's the local stagehands. Local #482.
I am ashamed by their failure. I am a member of Local #6 in St. Louis. I am a flyman, I raise the banners in St. Louis and also run the fly rail at the Fox.
If they didn't rehearse, it's malpractice in my head. I'm ashamed, I'd never rat out my brothers/sisters, but this...

Honestly...besides a Pitcher/Catcher and hitter in baseball....I see no point in analytics. Don't give players more to think about on the floor than necessary, trust their experience and talent. A basketball player who "thinks" to much is hesitant and questions their abilities. Please PLEASE please no analytics driven coaches everrRRRR again! One time...just one time, I would love for the coach to hand out an old fashion scouting report and that's it. number 20 likes to go left(example) .......simple .... easy.... scouting. I want a team...a group of five guys, who don't get overwhelmed in analytics from a coach. That simply just play basketball like they have previously. Put down the calculators and paperwork and maybe use that time and energy working on out of bounds plays...or a zone defense...or a 3/4 press....something all these players have heard and are used to. Analytics are so SO over rated in basketball. Go ahead and just think of ANY ANY top winning coaches and now tell me how much they won because of analytics? Don't make a difficult sport harder by adding to much "thinking". Just my opinion and yes I realize that doesn't mean much lol

Analytics are fine … if you have personnel (coaches and players) who can execute what the data tells you will work. We don’t seem to have them right now.

Exactly correct. The difficult scheduling is why the team even made the tourney two years ago, and the schedule this year has put the Illini in position to still make the tourney with a possible 10-10 conference season.

The reality is that the committee values teams playing the Quad 1 games (even if they end up being a loss) over a Quad 4 "cupcake" win. For the most part the Illini have been successful the last few years with the difficult non-conference schedule. This year the struggle has come in the form of the conference season, and no way would an easier non-conference schedule put this team in a better position. If anything, the Illini would be a very bubbly team compared to where they are now.

All great points. Many complain about the offense which is bad but the defense is just terrible. Every time we play the opposing team has player who have career nights. Defense and execution are just terrible, and those things can be coached.

Exactly. Analytics only work if you can make a reasonable percentage of your 3 point field goal attempts.

This year is extra disappointing because it's clear we have a super talented roster and with the right coaching they could very well be a final four caliber team. But there's zero indication the coaches are suddenly going to learn from their mistakes and improve all of a sudden. We just don't make the right adjustments, and even if we do it's always too little too late.

Huh? Frazier was literally good from day 1. Was the best player on the team as a freshman imo.

Honestly, you could make an argument that Frazier never really took that next step developmental wise that he could have in a 5 year career.

Definitely got stronger and improved defensively but he was basically the same offensive player in year 5 that he was as a freshman.

I agree with your sentiment. If Illinois can not keep an Illinois High School grad who wants to be here, there is a problem. I have been following, watching and listening to Illinois basketball since the pre-slush fund days. I probably am less invested in this team than any team I have watched in a number of years. And it is simply that I know a bunch of them will be elsewhere next year. I will continue to watch each and every game, but sometimes it is a chore.

Also I guess Brad doesn't remember when the 2018 Houston Rockets missed 27 threes in a row vs. the Warriors. Super short rotation is going to drain the energy and legs for shooting late in games. All analytics completely go out the window at that point.

Even if the head coach is not good at X's and O's, I would suspect that he isquite capable on his own of emphasizing the point that the ball needs to go inside. But that would necessitate calling a timeout.

But the data comes from prior observed data from the very guys that aren’t always capable of repeating what they did to establish the analytics

I think the bigger problem is the chronic issue of ignoring what is happening in real time right before the eyes, analytics are fine for pre game planning, but for cripes sake, when the other team has adjusted, we need to react, not stubbornly believe that analytics will get us the win.
