A question for the readers that understand the X's and O's of basketball much better than I do:

One thing I haven't noticed being mentioned here was the defense on pick and rolls. It seemed to me like we were always going over the ball screen allowing the ball carrier to drive the lane and take a lot of shots within 8 ft of the basket. To my knowledge, MSU isn't a great 3 pt shooting team (idk i could be wrong). Why wouldn't we go under the screens, dissolve the pick and roll situation, and force them to shoot from deep?
Going over the screens is not the problem. If you have noticed how other teams defend Ayo coming off a a ball screen? Their big guys hedge and then recover quickly. Our bigs ( Kofi and Giorgi) really struggle with this and did a terrible job at MSU. If you go under the screen on average you will be killed by the 3 ball.

THIS. Right here will end any final four NC hopes.
Yes unfortunately the scouting report is out. If you noticed in the 2nd half Izzo called several isolations for Henry. Damonti is an overall very good defender but people like Henry can just shoot over him. Grandison hasn’t shown to be any better on this front either. I really wish that BU would of given Hawkins more early playing time as I think that he will be eventually able to defend this.

Sorry to disagree but I think this statement is way overblown. I understand we lost. We also have had close games. But so has everyone else in the country other than Gonzaga and Baylor (until last night). Remember, Ohio St. lost to Northwestern, Michigan lost to Minnesota by 17.

Your statement that we can’t string many good games together is funny as we just had a SEVEN game winning streak snapped of which 5 were consider Quad 1 or 2 wins.

I am as disappointed as everyone that we lost, but the team has been pretty good against an incredibly tough schedule.
BU said he "wasn't disappointed at all" in his post-game presser. So I guess he saw a different game than most did. Head shaker for sure.

Say what you will regarding Tom Izzo as a human being, but the man hasn't forgotten how to coach. You knew at some point that Sparty was going to resemble vintage Sparty - maybe just in time for March. They beat the hell out of us physically and mentally.

He mentioned the the free throws and layups. I think he had a game plan and he thinks on paper we win that game more times than not. 50% on layups and 70% free throws would have been enough.

not a lot can be done when you shoot that poorly from 5 ft away and from the stripe

I don't think Hawkins can guard Henry, regardless of the amount of playing time he's received this year.

Agreed. That is a guy (type of guy) that Ayo or Damonte are going to have to guard well for us to go where we want to go.

MSU played dirty basketball and the worst officials in conference couldn’t keep it under control and it ends up with our all American possibly missing the final home game of his career.
Yep, and as I said in another thread if we draw them in Big Ten tournament I say we don't play. Why risk injury. Michigan got to decide whether they wanted to play or not.

Sure we missed FTs. But there so many things not called especially Ayo drives. And then bogus calls against us. (Hawkins put back, Ayo had a steal early in the second half where he jumped up and tipped it and they called a foul on him).
Man I’m as mad now as I was Tuesday night.

Great point that Robert made about Griffin getting suspended last year. If Griffin got suspended for that, This MSU player needs a suspension. That’s just as harsh.

Please stop. Griffin stepped on a player and there was no gray area with regards to his intentions. You can't look at that film and tell me he accidently stepped on Stefanovic. There is plenty of room for interpretation on Tuesday's incident. I think the punishment fit the crime, he got ejected for it but I don't think it warrants a suspensions since you can chalk it up to physical play (trust me I don't like it either)

Now that there are reports Ayo will miss games with a broken nose maybe the Big 10 will step up and show some leadership by suspending Sissoko. Otherwise, probably a clear disregard for a NPOY candidate

Wrong. The kid took it over the line. Anybody who has played more than 3 jr high games knows you don't go at a players head swinging both arms downward. Come on.

I agree, it was crossing the line but Griffin was worse IMO. Anyways, I'm just as pissed as you are that Ayo is missing time over this but bringing some different perspective to folks calling for Izzo's (and Sissoko's) head on a platter. It's not going to happen

Griffin was worse? How many games did Stefanovich miss?

The intention was worse. He very obviously stepped on a guy's chest who was down.

If Ayo was not hurt and didn't miss games there is no way you would be equating the two so why now?

Griffon didn’t hit the guy near as hard as Ayo was hit.

correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t the foul called actually before Ayo went into the air? So a whistle had already blown when he was hit in the face.
How can anyone, especially an Illini fan, see the BS flagrants Kofi was called for early in the year not be upset that this wasn’t immediately called a flagrant. And also that Kofi being hit I. The head wasn’t a flagrant? Kid deserves to be suspended. Read roughys article.

I never equated the two. I simply pointed out that the reaction of the two coaches involved most certainly is not equal (maybe in the Nebraska game thread). I agree they were both bad, but disagree that Sissoko wasn't "as bad." The intention maybe was not to injure, but it was certainly to "send a message," and one that ultimately in my opinion came from the coach before the ball was even tipped. If the B10 does not address, I fully expect a physical, chippy game at best in our next game with MSU whenever that may be. That is on Izzo, the refs, and the league. It has to be addressed.

Sure, I 100% agree with that. And I actually hope we don't see MSU again. Seems like a recipe for disaster.
