Michigan State 88, Illinois 80 Postgame

Yep, when we win, I'm happy for a couple of minutes but when we lose I stew for hours. Can't help it. Only cure is to quit sports since I don't watch much besides Illinois.
Was it Bill Self who said that the losses hurt more than the wins feel good? I don't know why it's like that, especially for "just a fan" as opposed to a coach or player, but I've always felt that quote perfectly sums up me. I wish like anything it wasn't true, but it is what it is at this point. After 40 years of following Illini basketball it hasn't become any less true.

which one do you have to guard on the perimeter? Which one is top 10 in the nation in assists per game? which one actually plays like a PG.

This whole Ty Rodgers thing has been freaking crazy on this board. Some of you act like he's your kid. I was talking to a buddy yesterday who is a Purdue grad. I said Ty Rodgers is a great player and the type of guy every single team wants, but they don't want him as a PG.

No one is saying I wish we could have landed Dennis so we can throw Rodgers on the bench. We're saying, if we had someone who could be trusted with the ball under pressure, facilitate the offense, stretch the defense AND have Rodgers doing what he does best around the basket, that makes us a much better and scary team. And you can look up any number you want, but that statement is 100% correct.
Cool. We also have the 5th most efficient offense in the nation right now and Baylor is 7th. Both great offenses. We also have the 41st ranked defense with Baylor 65th. How much better would we really be with a less offensively efficient point guard who is a worse defender, who gives us on average 6 less extra possessions a game, though gets more assists and can bring the ball up the court? Would that really make us Final 4 material? The numbers and stats just don't back this argument. I could see the point if Ty was inefficient on offense, or at least far less efficient than RayJ but that isn't what's going on. And who exactly are we replacing with RayJ if not Ty? Quincy? He's in a slump but has been terrific all season. Marcus? He's been far more efficient offensively and you'd actually increase turnover percentage with RayJ.

Listen, RayJ is a very good player. But so is Ty. I just do not get why this RayJ>>>>>Ty convo gets brought up every time we lose a game, especially since the biggest reason why we've been so bad down the stretch recently is that for "reasons" unknown to everyone including the insiders, Brad is stapling Ty to the bench for less efficient and worse defensive options.

And as to why some people including myself defend Ty on here, it's simply that I'm sick of people panning a really exceptional player because they aren't who they want them to be instead of enjoying what they are. Just like Brandon Paul will never be a 0 turnovers per game player, Ty won't be Steve Nash. People need to move off of it. We're a better team with Ty at the helm in my opinion and the stats back that up. Ty won't get the job done in the style that RayJ would, but he'll get it done in his own style. And Ty's style is pretty damn great.

Couldn’t suffer through all 16 pages of responses before I vented, so I apologize if this was already covered.

I was screaming at the TV to get Goode and/or Harmon out of the game and get Rodgers in throughout the entire meltdown. I could not believe my eyes when there was a dead ball and those guys were still on the floor. The only rational explanation I could come up with was that Rodgers was hurt.

As I gleaned from the first 7 pages of this thread, it appears nearly everyone else here came to the same conclusion I did.

A few weeks ago I saw something where, and I’m paraphrasing, Brad admitted that he spends too much time coaching the guys on the floor and doesn’t think enough about rotations. When I first came across that, I nodded and thought, “Ok, we’ve identified a problem, which is the first step in solving it.”

Fast forward to the last couple of games, and it seems this issue has become a bit of a nightmare we can’t wake up from. I don’t mean to be overly dramatic, but if the vast majority of fans watching see it and the guy in charge of the team doesn’t, it’s a problem.

To me, it was a borderline dereliction of duty to leave Luke and Justin out there all that time. Not just on Brad, but on the rest of the staff. Decorum be damned, if I were Tyler, Tim, Geoff, or Chester, I’d have had a hell of a time keeping myself from shoving Ty towards the scorer’s table and physically removing Goode or Harmon from the floor. It was THAT obvious.

Some of y’all really need to take a look at your emotional swings after wins and losses….it truly is unbearable at times. Look at that little number 10 that’s next to our name…..think about how long we didn’t have any number next to our name….and it really wasn’t that long ago. Brads only loyalty he has is to win games….not to any player or players. And last time I checked he’s won a lot of games here with many different styles and schemes and adjustments. And I swear if we beat Michigan by 20 some of the posters in here saying not having a PG is gonna be our demise will be the same ones saying man Ty and Marcus are the answer at PG!
I could not be more grateful for Brad but it doesn’t mean we can’t get frustrated over some of the consistent flaws/decisions that have cost us over the last couple years

But yes you are more right than not lol

He’s working back and has improved each game, a great sign. Still think he looks like the game hasn’t fully slowed down for him, but he’ll keep improving.
It's also looking like Hawkins is beginning to realize his ability to back down people and score or pass out to the open man. With his height he can make those passes easier than some of our other guys. I think when he sees how much success Domask and Rodgers are having working their men to the basket something has now clicked with him. That will be another weapon for us as the season goes on if he keeps that up. May be the final piece to the puzzle that gets us to the second weekend and beyond.

First of all I am grateful to have BU as our coach . I love this group of kids as well. We didn’t lose this game because we don’t have the perfect point guard , we lost it because the group on the floor couldn’t finish. We need to be better at getting our kinds rest in the second half so they are able to finish off these type of games. Fatigue leads to bad decisions and less aggressive play. What has happened to Quincy and Harmon, their play has fallen off the last 4-5 games. This team needs better leadership from the staff.

Something feels off with the team rn, even Goode is noticably more emotional, almost after every call. Ty is our toughest player (not close, really) and when he's out of the game, you better hope everything goes right, because our dudes can crack rather easily. I'm just being honest with what I'm seeing.

The Illini’s “defense” is most concerning. MSU scored 88, and it’s not like they were hitting a high percentage of tough, contested shots like Nebraska did. WAY too many interior scores.
No point guard, the officiating, Luke instead of Ty, ect; ect, those problems pale in comparison to letting the Spartans waltz into the paint for ridiculously east layups. almost the entire game.

Are you suggesting impeachment?

#437
Yep. Exactly. But he put himself in that position. He was the one that chose the all-or-nothing approach there. Ray J or no one. It will be all the praise or all the blame on one person at the end of the year. It’s a huge gamble.

And for the record, I think Ty’s been better than expected. Just not a complete replacement for a true PG. And if I remember right, we still have a spare scholarship just sitting around…
I would say Ty is the most improved player on the team. Agree/Disagree????

We should spend the next month getting Morretti ready to assume more point guard duties. Not ideal but it’s our only hope of addressing pg problem in the post season. If we just keep going with the same 7 or 8 guys we’ve been using, i think we all know the manner in which this season will end. We saw it today,

That will take a lot of "getting ready."

As much as we joke about the conferences coaches, by in large, they are really good. They get you on film and they find weekends. Our guards can be slow on defense and when we get a guy like Ty out there, we lose a ton of offense.

This was the worry going into the year and it's starting to tear it's ugly head
This teamis much better with Ty on the floor.Goode and Harmon are situation players and shouldn't be getting 20 to 25 minutes. This team needs Guerrier to step back up to be successful.

The last 8 minutes of our game yesterday took a toll on the rest of the day for me.........I was depressed and angry at the performance on national TV of the beloved.......I love this years team and all the components we have for a good progression in this years NCAA tourney...........I really really do......

But one thing is really really clear to me .........i want someone other than Marcus directing the offense in the last part of a game....Not demeaning his effort or skills , but dribbling is NOT one of his higher end skills....and the constant dribbling stagnates the offense at a time when we should be attacking the rim with abandon........having Marcus dribbling away 10-15 seconds off the shot clock leads to forced shots and unless we are rebounding like a banshee , it allows transition by our opponents and usually a bucket and even a and 1.....

I have said many times that Ty is MY PG......I firmly believe in his skills as a PG and more firmly believe in his skills as a bucket getter and high altitude rebounder.....I have called him the energizer bunny , as his attack to the ball is already legendary..........

having him on the court over Luke is a no brainer for me as he gets the offense going in a way that Marcus can't do.......I would rather have Marcus available for a pass down low and his skills in the 5-10 foot range for a bucket.......

Ty's improvement in FT accuracy leads me to believe he should be one of the players on the court until the bitter end or the bittersweet end.......

I have always thought you play your best players at the end of the game for the best opportunity to win the game......

I fully support BU and hope he retires here , but I also will criticize him when I feel justified to do so , and yesterday's loss was his fault as much if not moreso than the players......He didn't make the 2 atrocious turnovers that marcus made , but keeping Ty on the bench MIGHT have led to that happening........I visualize Ty doing his twisting and turning in the paint for a deuce rather than passes 30 feet from the basket that led to at least 4 points for the zero-izzo's.......

Let's not forget the two goaltends that were missed by the inept crew of clowns blowing the whistles yesterday.....

I would like for Cohawk to start the next game with tape over his mouth in a display by him of the totally stupid peeps we have now disguised as refs........

JMHO........................

Thats called basket interference, which results in goal tending call. Another missed call.
the defender's finger's was shown on replay to have gone up through the basket and above the rim.....what else is needed to define it as basket interference and 2 points for the beloved ??........

as number1IlliniFan stated " another missed call ".............................Among a multitude of other missed calls ....the goal tend on cooper was evident as the ball bounced off the backboard by a couple inches before he touched it......

I just can't believe games are being judged by such absolute inept clowns as this year has shown.........a complete meltdown of the integrity of the game......

JMHO.............

Morning-after thoughts:

Literally threw the game away at the end with incomprehensible turnovers.

I hate to acknowledge it because he's such a tool but Hoggard >> Marcus yesterday afternoon

MSU: eFG of 57.3%... owned us in the paint. The fact that it was our game to lose in the final 5 mins is mind-boggling. We can't continue to let teams shoot this well against us and have any prospects of progress in March.

The Spartans just looked tougher and more physical than we did. That's not good.

Crush Michigan on Tuesday. :illinois:

Yeah, people have got to chill. A couple weeks back going into the Indiana game some credible posters said the goal in our final 12 game stretch should be 9-3. This would give us a realistic shot at a 3 seed. We’re still on pace for that at 3-1 with the next 5 games in February being very winnable…say what you will about our struggles vs Maryland but something tells me the boys will be UP for that game. Also, let’s just say a W in Madison looks quite a bit more doable as of late 😁 on the Badger note, when that game rolls around BU will be pursuing history at the Kohl center…he really really will. Stay the course & beat Michigan.

Domask playing Booty ball at the half court line just exposes him against quicker guards.

If we truly are positionless, whoever the opposing 5 is guarding, let that person bring it up the floor. I totally trust Domask at end of clock situations, but he wil get his pocket picked at least once a game for an uncontested layup the other way.

Brad takes reasonability for losses probably more than any other coach in college basketball. Half the loses this year in the post-game he blames himself and failing to prepare the team better, etc.
I agree - but I also think he’s letting the team down right now

The Northwestern game was inexcusable, not adjusting the defensive calls down the stretch and hanging Goode and Domask out to dry- we were the better team and should have won- same thing tonight

We need to start running the offense through TSJ in crunch time- going to the Co Hawk post up 20 feet from the basket 8 straight times down the court is not good - yes it was working until they knew what we wanted and stole the ball twice

We need a better X’s and O’s approach to the game - an assistant like Nate the Great that is good at that- or we’re going to get Loyalaed again the year
