So a stomach stomp is twice as dangerous as a closed fist. Interesting
A "measured" stomach stomp where the victim was not seriously hurt. The closed fist swings by Diabate could have done much more damage. Not sure about the other 2 players, as I recognized Diabate and focused on him and Howard's slap.

If you want to send a message the league will hear, boycott the BIG tourney. They will listen to $$$ over howling fans every time.

Everyone: We have to come down hard. This looks really bad for our conference.
Warren: Wait, we’re talking about Michigan here folks.
Everyone: Doesn’t matter. No one is above the rules of law and sportsmanship.
Warren: I’m telling you, this is Michigan!!
Everyone: We will be a laughingstock if we don’t act.
Warren: But….Michigan…!
No one: Ok, what’s the least we can do and not look like fools?
Warren: Now your talking. Michigan!!!

What would have happened to a player that hit an opposing coach? I think this is MUCH more serious. The players that threw punches should be given 3 games minimum. Howard should be forced to square off with a younger, bigger athlete. His aggression seems to be peaked by small, old coaches that pose no physical threat to him. He has no business leading young men. Most young men (certainly myself at that age) have impulse control issues already without examples like this idiot.

IMO, what's worse is there has been no statement of remorse for Howard or the University.
Then they get off with a minor hand slap. I think the rest of the season for Howard, 1 for Gard, & 3 games for the players who threw punches.

Maybe the selection committee will do the right thing if Michigan is on the bubble

This is probably good for the immediate term for our team because Howard is probably easier to beat than a hypothetical replacement. But it's a sad day for the conference and college basketball on the whole. The head of the basketball program for one of the more prominent schools in our conference swung at and hit a member of the coaching staff of an opposing team, and kept his job. Moreover he hasn't shown an ounce of contrition or any evidence he understands that he behaved inappropriately. Just astonishing. If it was an Illinois coach who did that, and this was our athletic dept's response, I'd be ashamed.

Griffin received 2 games a couple years back for what he did. I believe Diabate was much more demonstrative in his actions and had the potential to cause much more harm... only 1 game suspension does not seem consistent to Griffin's punishment. I would have expected at least 2 games and maybe 3 games suspension.
Maybe I remember wrong but didn't Griffin's suspension come from UI?

No the Big Ten. "The Big Ten has suspended Illinois guard Alan Griffin two games after he stepped on Purdue's Sasha Stefanovic on Tuesday midway through the first half of the Illini's victory vs. the Boilermakers. The league reviewed the play and issued the suspension as well as a public reprimand, saying Griffin violated the Big Ten sportsmanship policy."

What videotape were they looking at to come to the conclusion that Diabate gets only one game? He threw multiple roundhouses. I hope Kofi makes him wish he was suspended for more than one.

Michigan, IMO needs to do a reset at the end of the season. This reset should include a new coach and remake of the roster. UM has two likely lottery/first rounders in Diabate and Houston. Their center might be a candidate to transfer, the seniors will graduate and move on. I just don't see Michigan continuing on with Howard, if I'm recruiting against him the two fight instigations are fair game.

Ty Rogers has to be thinking he made the right decision, this weekend he saw Illinois beat MSU and then saw Michigan nearly "beat" Wiscy.

Not going to add fuel to the fire, but it does look like a weak punishment given several other incidents. I'd note that Howard lost his temper before (didn't he threaten to kill Turgeon?) not that anyone took it seriously or thought it was more than a petulant outburst.

OTOH, I find it funny what set him off. Basically, he thought Wiscy shouldn't have called the TO or extended the game given the large lead and time remaining. But HIS team was pressing as though the game still mattered, and yet he was outraged when Wiscy responded like the game still mattered.

Am I the only one who thinks that if you're going to play to the end, it's a bad look to expect your opponent to roll over to help you save face?

I love Jerremy Werner's take on the Illini Inquirer podcast. He talked about the suspension being as such that any coach who engages in violence (punching, kicking, piledriver from the top rope, Super-Fly Snuka,...you get it) will expect to be out the remainder of the season. It should be to that level, but it is sad that it has to be.

Kevin loves scUM he showed that last year pretty clearly. If it is anything close scUM will get the benefit of any doubt. Gard grabbing him got him off the hook. The players is a big issue as any future punches thrown that don’t land better only be 1 game suspensions. Welcome to the new World Wide BIG cage fighting league.

It seems that they tore this page out of the policy manual. No need for it at this point.

If Michigan loses out could they drop below even getting an invite to the NIT? Be stuck in the CBI?
