Did Howard understand the 10 sec rule and that calling a timeout would reset it? After seeing the thread of him calling an under one minute timeout ahead at IU, I really do wonder if he knew the rule. Really do like Mike LaTulip's take on this in the Illini Inquirer podcast. Best I have seen/heard nation-wide.

You could almost say Griffin got 3 games because his incident happened early in the game.
True - I just went back and watched the replay of that, IMO no comparion to all the punches Diabate threw. Just a joke to suspend Griffin longer. Man, if Diabate has a big game Sunday, my blood pressure is going through the roof....

And if you remember, Underwood told Griffin to go to the locker room before he was thrown out, had Griffin apologize to Purdue player after, and completely owned that the behavior was unacceptable when talking to media after.

Or basically, the opposite of everything Juwan Howard did.

Sorry that I haven't read through all the posts. Does this mean Howard cannot participate in practices and recruiting or just cannot be at games?

I wish they had also docked him whatever percentage of his salary the 5 games comes to. Maybe hitting his pocketbook would wake him up a bit (although I doubt it).

Going to be a tough sell to convince recruits that he wouldn't be gone after another incident and that another incident won't happen. Opposing coaches are going to have major ammo going into visits. I thought they would keep him but suspend him the remainder of the (complete) season. Weak.
Edit: How in the world do you suspend the players for ONE game only? That is nuts!
Who would want their kid to play for a coach like that?

Generally speaking a suspension like this means he is not allowed in the bb facility or at the games. He is completely out of the loop which is a great break for Michigan because Martelli is a better coach

No the Big Ten. "The Big Ten has suspended Illinois guard Alan Griffin two games after he stepped on Purdue's Sasha Stefanovic on Tuesday midway through the first half of the Illini's victory vs. the Boilermakers. The league reviewed the play and issued the suspension as well as a public reprimand, saying Griffin violated the Big Ten sportsmanship policy."
2.5 games since he was tossed in the first half I believe. If it were Mich he would have gotten off with "timed served" for being kicked out and missing second half.

This was just released by the BIG Ten. There is more, but I only copied a portion of it. It appears Michigan "proactively" recommended the 5 game suspension of Howard.

“Big Ten Conference coaches and student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship conduct,” stated Commissioner Kevin Warren. “I am grateful for the partnership with Michigan Athletics Director, Warde Manuel and Wisconsin Athletics Director, Chris McIntosh. Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off of the court.”

The University of Michigan Athletics Director, Warde Manuel proactively addressed a five-game suspension of his Head Coach, Juwan Howard with Commissioner Warren. Concluding an assessment of the incident, the conference and the University of Michigan reached alignment on Coach Howard’s disciplinary action.

There's a pretty darn good chance Michigan will be Illinois's quarterfinal opponent in the B10 Tourney, which would be Howard's first game back. Interesting.

I think he should have been suspended for post season as well, although not fired. Let him cool off until November.

Does Howard forfeit his pay for the five regular season games for which he is suspended? Not that that a forfeiture such as that would make this sanction sufficient, I think he should have been dismissed, but I am curious about the full ramifications of this penalty. It strikes me that the UofM is trying to make this penalty look harsh, even though it is not "harsh" in the least, in the hopes that the conference will not go further.
To all of the posters ( mostly elsewhere) who parrot "well, what about what this other guy or that other guy did?" I would say this. When I was growing up and I did something wrong, my dad would ask me about it and I would tell him what happened. In those cases where I was clearly in the wrong, even in part, his reply to me would be "that's an explanation, but not an excuse." Appropriate punishment would follow. There is no excuse for what Howard did on a college basketball court.

Maybe I remember wrong but didn't Griffin's suspension come from UI?

Griffin's suspension came from the B1G

"It is important for me to emphasize and make it crystal clear that such behavior will not be tolerated, period," Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said in a statement. "The situation provides a teachable moment for all parties involved."

Apparently, the players in this case are fast learners.

$40,000 is 1.2% of his annual $3.25M salary, excluding benefits, camps, endorsement and kickbacks. Not even a speeding ticket for a working person. Considering his available disposable income, he won't notice the fine in any respect.

I apologize if these questions have already been answered. Is the BTT part of the regular season? Does he forfeit salary for the games for which he is suspended?

I don't know which is more offensive. The financial slap on the wrist imposed on both of the coaches or the suspension slap on the wrist imposed on the players.

I realize this isn’t the mentality of all parents of recruits, but there is no way in hell I would want him coaching my kid. All of the punishments handed out are a joke.
I said as much to my husband tonight. That goes for both teams, honestly. And if my kid was one of the ones throwing punches, I'd be on campus fast enough to make their head spin

Throwing haymakers gets one game. Great job, Warren!
Yea...Griffin steps on an opponent...and 2 games I believe....Kofi sells a few jerseys, which is no longer illegal and gets 3 games...but jump into the middle of a brawl and throw some punches....1 game suspension.....f*@%ing ridiculous....fire everyone in the B10 office that had any part in this peace of sh*t decision.....would love for B10 to justify the reasoning behind the difference in these 3 infractions and the resulting suspensions....I'll hang up and wait for the call
