Considering our 2-10, 3-9 history and being a laughingstock of the Big 10 and even the country, this is a great building block. We have a highly rated QB coming in who could be a 3 year starter and BB isn't going to be satisfied. Keep bringing in talent, depth and great coaches. This won't be the last bowl or even the best bowl that we'll play in in the near future.
Congrats to the team who made us fans actually smile, puff out our chests a little bit and proud to call the Illini our team.

Always disappointing to lose a bowl game but they fought like hell. The next big step this program has to make is on offense.
Yep…without letting the defense drop off much from this year. Hopefully we won’t lose any momentum with the coaching switch and we’ll be doing more fine tuning than anything else.

They said "Mike Leach" at least 5 times as often as they did "Illinois" today. This is why I hate ESPN specifically and sports entertainment in general. I don’t mind a bit of context or even a full narrative surrounding a game, but this has been nauseating. Pre-packaged artificial sentiment, over and over and over. This wasn’t a tribute; this was a set of mindless talking points. This was not a fitting tribute to Mike Leach.

@bjp84 I'm very positive. We weren't expected to even be in the game. Our young guys looked great. Our lack of depth has shown up yet again! I'll continue to be front row for this rebuild!! #ILL

For people mad that the broadcast focused on Leach a lot, what did you expect? If Bielema had passed three weeks ago unexpectedly, the same thing would have happened in the opposite way.

That was a well-called game by the officials, and while it was disappointing that Illinois did not pull out the win, it was fun to see them play in January again. Looking forward to another great season next year!

That last play of the game was a microcosm of the last 70 years of Illinois football . . . I want (I'm beyond hoping) us to contniue the upward trajectory so that an 8-5 season is viewed as falling backwards, not as having attained a pinnacle.

Heck of a ballgame. Lost another one score game (yes, not counting that scoop and score at end). All in all, a very successful season, and like every other loss this year, in it right to the end. I think we are seeing that we have made great improvements as a program, but our lines are not quite there yet. The game was decided by the play of the lines. Our freshman DB's were simply amazing...a lot to look forward to next year.

It was hard to tell on television, but I felt that there could have been opportunities for TDV to escape the pocket for a gainer. Instead, he took a number of sacks (even when the line held up) which put the team way behind the chains. This game looks completely different if he hit IW on 3rd down, but overall, happy with the fight and preparation of the team.

On to 2023!

Side note: Cowbells do not belong in the game of football. A weird MSU tradition, but to each their own.
