Compare this to the situation Saturday when DeVito suffered a late hit that rolled the Nebraska player into the Illini bench. Illini showed almost unbelievable restraint in a situation that could have easily turned into a serious altercation.

Agreed.

Illinois also has a lot more to play for. Frustration is mounting for MSU. They have nothing to lose. Therefore, Illinois needs to watch out for a desperate team. This situation will either bring them together or tear them apart even further.

I get the sentiment but I'm not blaming a tunnel for assault. It's all on the players....
This. Maybe you don't design a stadium like this anymore, but it is what it is and it hasn't been a problem for 100 years.

All that matters, in descending importance:
1a. Who swung helmets at who?
1b. Who ganged up on a player by punching or kicking when the player was swarmed?
2. Who threw the first punch?
3. Who said what?

I absolutely do not concur. Harbaugh may be a turd but this is on the MSU players and staff for reacting in a childish and violent way.

Running up the score is not new in college sports. It's a system that rewards victory margins with better perception and thus higher rankings. Until that changes, team will continue to run up score (and probably should) to get better TV times and bowls placements.

Tucker knows that. He needs to lead his team.

For fear of starting a political discussion, many in this discussion say “yeah, but what about” and seem to think “they’re wrong so I must be right.” Both sides are wrong and the other side’s mistake does not provide absolution.

One side can be more wrong than the other side.

Assaulting someone because they said something you didn't like is escalation in most places. There are factors that can mitigate/aggravate these scenarios but for the most part you can't swing a helmet at someone because they said something.

It’s not so much that MSU players weren’t villains here. They are absolutely are. It’s that Harbaugh acted in a manner consistent with lighting the match instead of defusing the situation. And, as a “leader” it’s his job to not do that.

Idk what is going on at Michigan but we are reaching a point where we are beyond anecdotal evidence and one off occurrences in regard to their money making sports programs with Harbaugh and Howard.

ESPN releases tunnel video:

First, there are too many people in the tunnel and most probably should not be there. Second, Looked like there were assistant coaches or grad assistants that were pretty close to the skirmish and did little if anything to stop it. Third, what kind of teammate looks at whats happening and does nothing except keep walking? This entire team, coaches, players and support staff need to look in the mirror, they're all guilty.

Hope other coaches around the conference and country use this as a teachable moment regarding sportsmanship/character (and the potential adverse civil, criminal, scholarship, playing time, NIL and reputational consequences of bad decisions).

Noticed on Twitter that at least some of the suspended players appear to have corporate NIL deals in place. Suspect those relationships may be scrutinized by the companies involved for potential termination or non-renewal.

If this happened between two MAC teams I guarantee it would not inspire the creative logic being employed to place blame on the team, coach, or stadium of the assaulted player.
Well, if you listen to the cops talk about cars being broken into, you'll hear a lot of "blame" cast at car owners who fail to lock their vehicles at night.

Admonitions to not do stupid $h!t aren't not the same as "blaming the victim". Football players are involved in an amped up physical atmosphere. Unnecessarily escalating emotions is stupid.

For one, that's absolutely not the same as the tone being employed here. I've never seen a cop call a car owner a "grade A dick" for failing to lock up their car. And if they did, they'd be wrong.

Second, the stupid "$h!t" that Michigan supposedly did was 1. Score points in a football game in a manner consistent with a team that wants to make the college football playoff and 2. Have a stadium that was designed in an inconvenient manner nearly 100 years ago. This is far more akin to "well, she should probably not have had so much to drink."

We all hate Michigan, myself included. That's what's going on here. But 100% of the blame in this scenario goes on the MSU players who cornered and attacked an opposing player, and if it weren't Michigan (or some other hated rival) that'd be the end of the discussion.
