It already has. They never wanted it to happen.
I don't think the NCAA had any choice but to let NIL happen. If they didn't, it would have been legislated by each state individually, and would have created a very uneven playing field if some of the states ratified it before others.

How will this change the schools who are not power teams but have big donors and endowments. Look at Harvard, the allure to play in Boston and get paid. Will Memphis players have a perpetual deal with FedEx.

Exactly. And they never wanted it.

Question: What levels does the new NIL rule cover in college athletics???.....DI...DII....JC....???.....Anyone thinking they should extend this on down to the High School level as well.....I mean a high school senior in a major metro area could probably knock down some pretty serious cash

Why not take it down to the 8th grade level? These people have accomplished nothing more in life other than to excel at playing a game. This ruling has changed the landscape of college sports and in my opinion not for the better. Wait and see. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil and we will see it rear it's face often with this ruling. All that glisters is not gold. Just my opinion.

Money has always been a part of college sports. The difference now is that the guys playing are actually allowed to get some of it.

And as for "accomplished nothing more in life other than to excel at playing a game" I don't see how this differs from any other individual with a niche skill. For example, a child actor or Olympic gymnast (who typically tend to be under 18). We don't balk at those individuals monetizing their talents, even at a young age.

To my mind, the thing causing the instability here is that, unlike a professional sports team, the college team is not a direct source of the income. If universities could pay players directly, as employees, and sign them to exclusive deals, you'd have more stability. I've seen a lot of people compare the current situation to the NBA, but you don't see star players in the NBA hit the free agent market every year. Lebron has hit the free agent market 3 times in 15 years. Durant twice.

Combining NIL with the transfer portal could cause coaches to jump off of high buildings. I know I'm not looking forward to the yearly upheaval of Illini rosters.

A couple of questions:

Any idea how much these deals are worth? I know they'll range but are we talking $10k or $100k?

Will signing any of these contracts actually limit the ability to move on in the future? Can't enter the portal because you're signed with Big Boy Chevy through next year?

Sounds like some small local deals will be on the 5-20k range but the bigger deals with big companies for big name players are six figures

The thing about NIL is that all college athletes will be trying to get their share and there is only so much money that will be available. We're focused on Kofi, but at schools that have a good football and basketball team, it will be a scramble to see who can get money from sponsors. I think in the future, the money for each athlete will be smaller than what is anticipated. Look at Baylor, good football, basketball, and track teams and there are only so many sponsors. To me, $25-50,000 per athlete will be the norm. Of course, there will always be one or two athletes at a college that will get more, but it won't be dozens.

I saw something yesterday from ESPN that was interesting. A lot of the money the players are going to be getting is coming from social media not from traditional advertising with businesses. They highlited several athletes who already have millions of followers on social media and how a lot of athletes are going to replace the current "influencers" as the big social media money makers.

This makes sense to me. I just don’t see that many national companies signing too many of these guys to traditional advertising deals. Sure a shoe company or sports apparel company might be interested in getting in early on some players, but just don’t see that happening with a lot of players.

He isn't allowed to earn money in the U.S. under any of those is he?
At least one of those has loop holes, but it is complicated. Student athletes who are not US citizens or permanent residents definitely have restrictions.

Where have you heard this? Link? I'm truly curious about the dollar amounts that might get offered for what level of player.
The Miami Hurricanes quarterback got a deal for 20k from a moving company. I don’t have a link handy as I’m out and about right now, but it should be easy to find.

An other board has the players and amounts per media post, Curbelo has a sponsorship with U of I CU.

What I’ve heard is they cannot be wearing any team items when getting paid under NIL. That’s what I’ve heard. It’s kind of amazing how little we know about the whole thing and it’s happening right now.

I'm sure a lot of values are inflated. Right now this has people's attention and pretty much any NIL sponsorship is newsworthy.

In theory, could a big company like Nike, Adidas, etc. pay extra to have the athlete wearing official school gear? i.e., the university gets a cut of the ad money for use of its name and trademark?

I am just wondering if that's allowed... or if the NCAA decided that was off limits, viewing it like the school and the player are going into business together or something.

I was wondering the same thing today. At the same time, I think U of I Credit Union is a big sponsor of the athletic department and is paying Curbelo.

Shoe company must be fretting this a bit because if it's perceived they're favoring some schools over others in terms of NIL money they could lose some contracts.

From yesterday’s Saturday Sports Talk…the rules are all over the place right now. At Illinois, players can wear O&B colors, but no Illini gear. Michigan State is allowing Spartan gear to be worn. Arkansas is not even allowing team colors to be worn.

Makes perfect sense, right?!
