Is it, though? It's a big one, but how the GM constructs a team and how the manager coaches it are a big part of it regardless of payroll. The Angels have been near the top in payroll and near the bottom in standings for... well, ages. The Yankees are a mixed bag despite generally being at the top. The Mets have pitching and that's about it.
Money helps. Money is necessary, even. But money doesn't necessarily buy championships.

The teams with the best players often win. The best players often will get paid more. True in most aspects of sports and business. There is a reason a small handful of businesses dominate their respective industries. Maybe this opens the door for innovative thinking that allows a school that otherwise was on the outside looking in, to find new ways to compete. Does it benefit Illinois? Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell. Glad we have some good people working hard on our behalf.

well, I'm not saying that just because team A spends more than team B they'll do better. And money alone won't "buy championships." I never said that. But it's the number one factor. Plenty of factors enter in at the upper echelons. But the small market teams aren't making much of a dent in the standings these days for a reason.
As it relates to NIL. This will likely become a bigger and bigger factor. And there will always be one off success stories. But overall, teams that are able to put significant dollars behind NIL are going to have a huge advantage over teams that can't.

I wonder as NIL becomes a primary decision factor for recruits if it will level out where the top players go- right now Alabama, OSU, etc get tons of top players given they are willing to sit behind other top players knowing their ticket to the NFL is set and that’s when the money will come- but the NIL money won’t be the same for all of the top recruits any given year
if a top 20 FB player can get more NIL being “the man” at Illinois than being the 20th biggest name at Alabama, I would think that would start to happen eventually

Can i ask a likely stupid questions on NIL? If i buy an Illinois basketball jersey (from official sites/retailers) with a player's name on it (say, Trent), does that player get compensated? I would assume so, but my googling skills is not answering this question, so just wanted to confirm.

Do we have the ability to search public records to see what the athletes get? Do the Guardians have to show who they give the money too?
No one knows, of course, but my guess is that most of the NBA prospects want to get the NBA, so their #1 driver is development that gets them there or moves them up the draft board. For players who aren't expecting a quick path to the league, NIL might be more of a factor than future earnings, and in some cases, guys who excel in college might even do better financially while they're eligible. Lotta college fans don't follow the NBA, even though that's where the big salary money is.
I wonder if the transfer rule has more impact --coaches need to recruit guys who fit and are likely to stay with the program, and that's no small task given how easy it is for someone to blame the coaches for performance. I kinda like the rule as it stands right now --players being eligible immediately after their first transfer, but having a sit-out period if they continue to jump around. It puts skin in the game on both sides more than unlimited transfers, while giving players a good degree of freedom. YMMV.
I really don't get some of the belly-aching that comes up over small market teams vs big. It's been that way forever, with programs finding ways to induce players. The difference is that now it's more transparent, less hypocritical, and less punitive. The idea that a program gets caught, all the players and coaches have left, and they punish the new guys seems insane to me...but then again, so do the rules and enforcement...

It amazes me that the NCAA think they are going to fix the NIL. We all know schools are telling recruits you come here you will make this much. It’s free agency like it or not. The powerhouse schools will continue to get good recruits

They couldn’t make a decision on NIL to save their life, leaving individual states to make up their own rules. Any rule they make now will be broken and there is nothing they can do about it at this point. Plus no one will stop laughing in their face long enough to even notice they made a rule.
