Podz is having a phenomenal last month for the Warriors. He’s been put into the starting lineup with Curry/Butler and he’s flourishing.

48/97 from 3 pt range since early March.

Last 6 games:
22/5/3
27/6/5
8/5/1
28/8/6
26/8/6
19/6/4

True. You can’t directly compare Super Bowl viewership to NBA Finals viewership, but we can look at what the Super Bowl viewership was in the past and compare that to the present to see whether or not viewership is increasing and we can do the same thing for the NBA Finals.

Here’s the data (done by hand, so apologies if any of this isn’t 100% accurate).

Between 1990-1999, on average, the Super Bowl received 85.8M viewers.

Over the past 3 Super Bowls, it has received an average of 121.5M viewers.

That is a 41.6% increase in viewership.

Compare that to the NBA Finals.

Between 1990-1990, the NBA Finals averaged 23.9M viewers on average.

Over the last 3 season, the NBA Finals has received 11.78M viewers.

That is a 50.7% decrease in viewership.

That’s… not good.
Just catching up. Domestically, the NBA is falling behind, but it doesn't mean the league isn't as healthy as it's ever been. Americans might care less, but the NBA has been making inroads all over the globe. We only track viewership domestically, but consider...

From Forbes in May of 2024:
Over 75% of the NBA’s social media followers are from outside of the U.S. and the league generated a record 26 billion video views across their social platforms this season, up 22% compared to last year.

The NFL is a sports moneymaking machine, unlike any other sports league in history. (50% more revenue than the NBA) MLB and NBA are more of an apples-to-apples comparison, considering they have mostly regional followings and play multiple times a week. (Very similar revenue streams)

Games are relatively infrequent, and even a casual fan will watch games that don't involve their favorite team. Scarcity is the NFL's secret weapon, along with it being the best suited for fantasy leagues.

E B Give it up....the NBA has become unwatchable for the average fan, proven by the 50% decrease in fandom. The games have become three-point contests, with no other skill being emphasized. Games were much more fun in the 80's and 90's, lower scores and better defenses made each possession more of a strategic struggle. It was BASKETBALL at the highest diverse skill set. And its why Magic, Bird, Michael, Kobe, and Shaq, were easily recognizable figures, and teams like the Bulls, Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Rockets had such followings....

Other than the NFL, which is unique in its ability to constantly draw eyeballs, name one professional sports league that has not seen a decrease in its viewership numbers since the 80s and 90s.

Then ask yourself if anything has changed about how entertainment is consumed since the 80s and 90s. Then think about whether there might be a connection between those two things.

Now, when it comes to attendance at games, something that is more resilient to the changes in how at-home entertainment is consumed, the NBA is doing better than ever. Last season the NBA set multiple attendance records, and across all teams over the entire season filled its arenas to 98% capacity. This doesn't sound like a league with an unwatchable product that has a "50% decrease in fandom."

Midway through this season, the attendance numbers were a few hundred a game shy of that record. Which is still pretty good!

This also contrasts with the MLB, which saw its peak attendance in 2007 and last season was about 8 million fans short of that number.

You can bring feelings to a facts fight if you choose. The NBA brought in 10.58 billion in revenue in 2022-23, 11.34B in 23-24, and are projected to exceed 13 billion this season. Someone must be watching.

I watched a short while a couple of weeks ago. They set 2 or 3 screens trying to get to the basket or P&R. If those don't work someone shoots a 3. After a while I had a thought. If not for the 24 second clock they could work harder for a good shot, run some plays, have some strategy. It's not going to ruin the game if they give them a few more seconds. What's the hurry anyway? It's not like they are going 4 corners. I don't like 2 passes and a shot. Anyway, not a fan. The guys I know who are fans are 82 years old and will watch anything, and 2 guys who can't change a tire and will watch anything. OTOH it beats the heck out of soccer.

I 100% agree with illinirog. I don't care what the numbers say. Those are corporate dollars, not fan dollars. It's an entirely different business model now. Gambling is what has helped boost up those numbers in a big way. I know lots of people with gambling apps on their phones and none of them will sit and watch an entire game. They are not fans, they are just watching the numbers related to whatever their bet is riding on. NBA games are boring and have been for years. I cannot even remember the last time I sat and watched an entire game. Been at least 10 years, probably longer. Celtics Championship with Allen, Garnett, & Pierce was likely the last, whenever that was.

Since the Illini in the Pros thread got locked, thought I'd share it here

Wow, great for Nunn. Since in that article they noted the similarities in pay to NBA by pointing out 'after taxes'. Does that mean he will not be paying taxes there? Seems to be what they were implying.

In most European countries the tax codes are far simpler than ours which allows taxes to be deducted from pay and sent in by employers without any need to file stuff. So these contracts are able to reliably tell players what their pay will be after taxes. My guess is the contract numbers for Nunn essentially represent his pay after taxes are deducted.

Also, he may still have to pay taxes on that income to the U.S., especially if his permanent offseason residence is here.

What has to happen for TSJ to get a chance tonight/this series vs. the Lakers? Guessing injuries and serious foul trouble. Sure would make the NBA playoffs more fun for me to see him in the rotation in a marquee matchup like this one.

A 23-point lead is the answer

Teams are known to shorten their bench in the playoffs. Looks like Minnesota only went 8 deep (5 starters and 3 bench guys) tonight so it'll be tough for TSJ to break through to get meaningful minutes in the postseason.

On another note, I'm actually quite surprised to see Luka Garza is basically on his way out of the league. Year four and he's still coming in mostly for garbage time minutes. His shooting has worsened over time too.
