Nebraska 20, Illinois 7 Postgame

Bret Bielema is either a super salesman able to convince Illini fans they should buy season tickets because this football team is really really good, or he is absolutely clueless in his assessment of any and all aspects of this team and coaches. They are abysmal at best.
They don't know the rules regarding receiving a kickoff, can't get 1 yard when they need to, have a horrendous punter, cannot contain the other team's QB, and have a worthless offensive line and a substandard, ineffective, and poor decision maker for their QB. Plus they have offensive offensive and defensive coordinators. I cannot see how they could possibly win another game. They are an embarrassment of a team and Bret Bielema owns all of it.....

Yeah, he does.

Remember Mike Thomas? It can get much worse.

Overall winning %
Thomas - .387
Whitman - .364

Big Ten winning %
Thomas - .200
Whitman - .292

We're right back in the same ole same ole "he's an alum and bleeds orange and blue and he's so nice to the donors in Tolono, so we're ignore HIS pathetic record" BS we lived with for 19 freaking years under Guenther.

Awesome.

Did someone warn coach B during his interview to take the job, that Illinois has a history of catching lightning in a bottle and winning only once a decade, and that if he did that in year 2, it would be a total rebuild after that, with another 9 year wait for a second chance at success ? ? ?

Whitman doesn’t get to swing and whiff on another football coach and staff right?
Once again, Illini fans are greatly overestimating how our ADs are evaluated. Student athletes get good grades, basketball is competitive, and he conducts himself in a professional matter and has done a lot to stabilize and improve the athletics program overall. Like it or not, he'll be hiring the next coach assuming Bielema doesn't turn it around.

Bright side: All the visiting recruits had to see how badly we need talent.
true... but we've experienced those recruits deciding against coming here, because the other side of that coin is: why would I come here and play on a losing team ? ?

Guenther seems to have done irreparable damage to the program, if he was still running the athletic department today, the Illini would be would begging to join the Pac-16, Big XII, or ACC after his boy Larry Scott destroyed the Big Ten.

Does Josh start to question Bret’s ability to turn this around. I don’t think you can just put this on Lunney, Henry, and Miller because he brought them in and chose to sign the players we have.

We also look slower and less athletic than any team we’ve played. He made the decision to sign more prep guys than really dive into the portal.
Yes I have thought from our first game we didn't look big10 caliber, especially our offense. Even the teams we thought were worse than us look like they are quicker and have better timing on their offensive plays.

Yeah, Illinois fans need to chill with the idea of firing a head coach every time we have a bad year. It’s only his 3rd year and he did very well in his second year. Best season for us in YEARS.

We are not Ohio State. We can’t and shouldn’t expect a consistent upward trajectory year to year. There will be some down years like this one. All we can hope for is that there will be more good years than bad years. It’s just the reality at Illinois. Nonetheless, Bret definitely needs to make some staff changes.
Here's the problem with CoachB making the staff changes. He's proven He's not very good at changing coaches around him! Arkansas absolutely went down hill when he lost his original group of coaches. Wisconsin, I have no idea, Maybe a God complex when he was younger.
To me the frustrating part is, we are throwing money around to have a outstanding support system of coaches around CoachB.
This team is younger, but wow we are heading to losing all of are remaining games.
CoachB better grab a pair, man up, and try other players simply for trying to find game talent.

I can see a new coach not choosing the best coordinators under him, but Bret is a seasoned coach with supposedly a large Rolodex of coaching contacts and has an AD that seems to give him the $ to hire. But when you see continual poor play in all phases (offense, defence, special teams) and sub par recruiting you have to question what really is the problem.
The thing is we didn't have poor play the first 2 seasons he was here for the most part. Suddenly this year we do. That's not continual, that's a what the hell is going on? Bret's first 2 seasons honestly should give him a lot of leeway here to work his way out of whatever is going on this season. Is it truly players tuning Bret out and giving up on the team? It doesn't look like that to me. I think the guys are playing hard, they just look so entirely overmatched at everything. It's either a scheming problem or talent problem or both.

The one thing Bret can be blamed for is not being able to land a RT, whether through the portal or recruiting. But outside of that, unless the team has a cultural issue, I'm just not sure he should be the one being held accountable for what is going on at this point. Some position coaches or coordinators need to be let go before you get to that point in my opinion.

It just makes no sense to me how a team gets this terrible in a year. Something else has to be going on.

And who will come fix this mess next?

He absolutely needs time, and yes I know this year is a disaster. But things can get worse, much worse.

This has been the question over and over and over again, as we fire everybody, hire new, catch lightning in a bottle once, extend contracts, drop into multiple losing seasons, fire everybody again... Over and Over and Over and Over again.... We've had one flashy coach in M.White, and one ultimate game manager in Mackovic, both of who we also lost... Since Ray Eliot retired in 1959, we've be recycling this scenario... And who will come fix this mess next?

So Lunney went to Iowa OC seminar in the offseason apparently?

Now how good were Chase and Tommy D to make Lunney look that good last year.

Good lord. I’ve seen some really bad HS games that were better than this.

This was Hindenburg “oh the humanity” bad.

I've stated since the Penn State game, that Luke should not be on the field period. he holds the ball too long, moves around the pocket. He gets blasted and killed. when you see a wall of defenders and linebackers about to hit you. Throw the ball out of bounds, get rid of the ball, quit fumbling and throwing interceptions. Don't get me started on our offensive coordinator. Put paddock in, put another QB1, I don't care. put 3 TE's with our lineman have 8 offensive linemen. I don't care, do something. This is bad. I support CoacgB, doing the same thing over and over with failure is insanity.
