No matter how bad you thought it was on TV, it was even worse in person. I'm sure a lot of what I'll say here has been beaten to death, but i gotta vent for a second.

We were bad on both ends of the court. Those slips for dunks and quick hitter inbounds plays Nebraska burned us with were just ridiculous. We looked like a 7th grade team that had no idea how to guard.

And on offense. Yikes. I mean, Brad said it post game. Too much ISO. But what I saw was just a stagnant half court, nobody moving, cutting. The only screens were weak on ball stuff at the top of the key. Way too easy to guard. So the whole thing became one guy getting the ball, pounding it half to death, and either turning it over comically or jacking a terrible shot. Our decision making was an F- tonight. And too many of those bad shots led directly to points for Nebraska. Like they needed extra help.

I just don't get Brad's stubbornness with Humrichous. Guy was 0-14! The only time we scored worth a darn was when he was on the bench. He literally has one job, and if he's not hitting he needs to ride the pine.

I knew when we went to OT we were toast. I told my daughter, the football team is really good in OT...the basketball team not so much. Wish I would have been wrong, but seen this too many times.
I think it would have been easier to inbounds the ball at the end of the 2nd half to DGL versus Ben, as DGL is much quicker and a better athlete and maybe we would not have wasted so much time inbounding the ball into the back court. BU did get a question about having Ben in versus an effective DGL, but his logic did not make sense to me.

I just think that BU is too stubborn at times and possibly listens to the wrong people on his staff

FighterofNightman had a good comment on the game thread about these guys not caring if they lose. And I think he’s right.

These guys are pros. Most of them make 100,000+ a year just in cash to play. And the college regular season is like the NBA regular season. Some days you show up. Other days you don’t.

We don’t have any competitive killers on this team. It’s just mercenaries being well paid on a one year contract.

And I also think that has played a role in Underwood coddling these guys and finessing them in the media. He’s like an NBA coach. Can’t be a hard !!! anymore with the players bc they are paid big money and can leave at any time.

I miss college basketball the way it used to be. I can’t get into what is basically minor league basketball at this point
Mercenaries is spot on.

Brad kept saying he wanted shooting and positional size. They got the tape measure part right, but completely whiffed on the shooting. We started tonight about 1 for 15 and rank in the bottom 10% of college teams. Boswell has astonishingly bad judgment on when to shoot, and is far below the percentage he shot at Arizona. Why???

IMG_3754.jpegTorvik shows what everyone has been saying - Ben struggles against high level competition. What I didn't realize was this is consistent with his games last year.

I've been sitting on this take for awhile now...
Brad Underwood is John Calipari on a budget..

I'll take it because I lived through Groce and Weber...

But Shaka Smart or Sean Miller....

I think there needs to be a serious conversation about the coaching staff. May even need a situation like the Eagles where the front office picks coaches for the coach. The NCAA allows 5 assistant coaches now and we have a bad staff outside of Antigua in my opinion.

Brad is a great recruiter but struggles with X's and O's in my opinion and he has been soundly out coached by both Muss and Hoiberg in games that should have been won handily.

Also, in games Tyler seems to be the assistant coach in his ear the most and he really has no experience to speak of.

Assistant Coaches:

Orlando Antigua: great recruiter, seems to be a good developer of bigs.

Geoff Alexander: legitimate power conference assistant coach. Say what you went about him but he's been around the game a while and worked his way up the chain. Spent a long time working through junior colleges and mid majors.

Zach Hamer: has a couple of years as a video coordinator and scout with the Lakers and Fever before coming to Illinois as a scout, was a student manager at Vanderbilt. Does not have the experience to be an assistant coach at a top 25 basketball program imo. Should be at a mid major working his way up.

Tyler Underwood: Nepotism hire, worked in video and scouting for a couple years but the only reason he is on this staff is because his dad is the head coach(also only reason he played power conference college basketball).

Kwa Jones(temporary assistant coach): graduate manager at Illinois, some video coordinator experience, one year scheduling travel for SFA.

That's just a bad coaching staff imo. There are only two legitimate power conference assistants on the staff and Alexander should probably be a third or fourth assistant not the 2nd best. Basically has 3 kids on it with very little experience saying they belong at this level and none of them even played basketball at a high level.

Maybe having 1 guy like that on the staff is ok but having 60% of you assistant coaching staff be underqualified for the job is a joke at this level.

We win when we are hitting 3s. If not we are in trouble. We can beat anyone when the team is hot. I don't see us hitting 3s enough games in a row to win the NC, so we can forget that for another season, even if Tomi gets back up to speed and we play much better. There will be a clinker in the mix sometime in the tourney, maybe the first game.

Whatever the offense was after MJ's second foul, I hope to never see it again.
We could not get any transition buckets with the small lineup when he was out as well. I would happily trade Tre being able to get out on the break vs getting 10 boards in the half.
And yet, ended up controlling our own destiny with 18 seconds left in regulation. We have got to learn how to close a game out. I appreciate the grit in the last 3 minutes, but we need a closer.

Who cares? Bringing in talent is not an issue with this staff. Coaching basketball is. Need an Xs and Os guy. Punt Kwa Jones to somewhere else and get someone who can draw something up out of a timeout

What happened to Yaklich from UIC? I recall talk of picking him up as a defensive coach. Is he available for a trial run to help through at least the end of the season? We need someone that can help with how to deal with all the screening action. Whatever Hammer (sp intended) is doing really sucks.

I am old. I just figured out who Matthew Mayer is. I had erased that fiasco from my brain cells.

Humrichous plays so much because of the money he is making... If you are the big $$ donor(s) who wrote big $$ checks (as in several hundreds of thousands) because Brad told you "We need this guy to compete for titles" and then he sits for 2/3rds of the game, will you be writing checks next year when Brad tells you "We need this guy to compete for titles"? If it was me I would put winning above all else, but there's a reason Brad doesn't come to me for money (I don't have any). Not saying it's right, but it's the reason
Come on. Does that mean we gave Booth so much less than Ben that Jake Davis can get orders of magnitude more time?

Last I knew on a dead ball inbound you have a pivot foot and can’t actually move both feet.

This is dumb. Unless these donors are blind there’s no chance they want Humbrickhouse on the court regardless of how much money they donated
