KJ is not ready for the NBA. He needs another year of college to work on his ball security and strength.

He’s a lottery pick, so he’s gone. But he’ll struggle against quicker and stronger guards in the NBA.

Reed Shephard is in the G league. Granted the Rockets are loaded, but I think KJ will be there next year to in order to fix the ball handling issues he has. At 6’6 some smaller NBA guards will be able to play up close and under him and that will disrupt his game. Plus he’s only 18. He’s got time to develop. Not many NBA teams are going to put a 19 year old into the rotation

Not true. The first shot in OT was the typical "trying to be Domask iso backdown".
Well, I did say his "first 3" in OT. As far as his backdowns, Ben is actually pretty decent at working to get in position and get off decent shots in the post, he just make many of the shots.

For real, is there a record in Big 10 play that would put us in the NIT? I think we play 20 Big 10 games. If we go 10-10, 9-11, or 8-12 would we be left out of the NCAA tourney? We have to earn this, it is not going to be given.

I really do not want a #1 seed in the NIT.

This team is playing like a bunch of underclassmen. Mistake and mistake, TO after TO. Chuck up a 3 from anywhere out of panic. Brad needs to go back to recruiting high school kids and teach them the game the right way! The transfer portal only wins for the players getting big bucks. There is not 1 player on this team that is an NBA type player. KJ, Will, Tomi, KB all need to learn the game more. Too many weaknesses.

To me, if you want to truly put anything on BU, this is it. When you have to replace an entire team in one off-season, you're going to miss on a couple. That's stupid and short-sighted to think otherwise. HOWEVER, being short at the depth at the 4 and 5 was an obvious problem and unfortunately, this is what's coming back to bite us. Would have been nice to have Dain or CH on the roster, but there's only so much money to go around.

Ridiculous loss, turnovers, poor % shooting, too many 3-point attempts, the wrong personnel getting playing time, etc. Hopefully this can be fixed, and soon. However, I am no longer optimistic about short term part of the B-10 season. My only hope is that this team will be s playing better by March. Time will tell. Very frustrating for everyone.

I think there needs to be a serious conversation about the coaching staff. May even need a situation like the Eagles where the front office picks coaches for the coach. The NCAA allows 5 assistant coaches now and we have a bad staff outside of Antigua in my opinion.

Brad is a great recruiter but struggles with X's and O's in my opinion and he has been soundly out coached by both Muss and Hoiberg in games that should have been won handily.

Also, in games Tyler seems to be the assistant coach in his ear the most and he really has no experience to speak of.

Assistant Coaches:

Orlando Antigua: great recruiter, seems to be a good developer of bigs.

Geoff Alexander: legitimate power conference assistant coach. Say what you went about him but he's been around the game a while and worked his way up the chain. Spent a long time working through junior colleges and mid majors.

Zach Hamer: has a couple of years as a video coordinator and scout with the Lakers and Fever before coming to Illinois as a scout, was a student manager at Vanderbilt. Does not have the experience to be an assistant coach at a top 25 basketball program imo. Should be at a mid major working his way up.

Tyler Underwood: Nepotism hire, worked in video and scouting for a couple years but the only reason he is on this staff is because his dad is the head coach(also only reason he played power conference college basketball).

Kwa Jones(temporary assistant coach): graduate manager at Illinois, some video coordinator experience, one year scheduling travel for SFA.

That's just a bad coaching staff imo. There are only two legitimate power conference assistants on the staff and Alexander should probably be a third or fourth assistant not the 2nd best. Basically has 3 kids on it with very little experience saying they belong at this level and none of them even played basketball at a high level.

Maybe having 1 guy like that on the staff is ok but having 60% of you assistant coaching staff be underqualified for the job is a joke at this level.
Totally agree. We need an offensive guru a la Gentry. And Hamer? I just don’t understand the hire. Heard he’s buddies with Tyler or something. GMAFB.

You lasted a lot longer than I did. I turned it off after the second Nebraska dunk at the end of the first half. Between the noon ball offense and two straight dunk instances of “ole” defense, I decided it was easier to not keep watching.
I tried to quit earlier in the second half but I’m a sicko who loves the pain and ended up watching it on my phone in bed. It was hard enough not watching overtime for me lol

Really Indy? You may not want to say it, but BU really has reached his peak. The in game lapses, roster construction questions, pulling a Kirk Ferenz with Tyler? Could it end not with the so usual Illini way of keeping a coach a year or two too long? Do we have to fall to the Groce level teams again before we pivot?

Either Brad needs a complete revitalization next year or the sooner the better. He is 61 years old how long does he want to stay in the even further decaying cess pool that NCAA basketball has become?

Last night, I was absolutely despondent over the loss and a couple of players. The five that he had out there at the of regulation made absolutely no sense. Haven't heard is presser, so not sure if that was addressed.

That said, BU was asked to do the impossible during the off-season and it's completely related to NIL. He had to fill out an ENTIRE roster from last year, three guys being All Conference and one being an All American. That's a hurdle I'm even if you have 6 to 7 guys coming back.

I think that we all know, two guys in particular, that were clear misses. That said, it's irrational to think that he was going to be a perfect 9 for 9(or whatever it was). That's just irrational.

He also left them short of big men. Obviously, the reliance on TI is probably more than anyone expected. He's the glue on offense. There's absolutely no discussion on that. His options, size wise, are Morez and Ben. That's really it. They have big bodies and defensively......those are the options. Offensively, nobody can predict that BH would be THIS bad shooting the ball. When he's hot, WOW! When he's not, WOW! There's no middle ground.

The takeaway, for me, is that you HAVE to return guys and build on that. We need proven shooters and we need proven bigs.

One could say that TI is a proven shooter, which I can buy. The issue is that when he's out, this is a terribly offense and defensively......were soft and not overly intelligent(from a basketball perspective).

I watched the presser and watched Brad tell Piper he was “a crappy player.”

Didn’t come across as a joke and if it was a joke right after your team looks like garbage is probably not the right time to go after a reporter. Especially considering the beat reporters at Illinois are almost always fair to Brad.

Pretty petty all things considered.
The radio post-game 100% reminded me of the late-era Weber pressers throwing players under the bus. He is clearly rattled and not handling it well.

Yes … For the right job …
Meh, we have the right coach. People are nuts who are calling for his head. I'm not overly impressed with Miller in any event. He's a whatever guy.

That said, we can't keep losing assistants and we can't rebuild a roster from ground up again. No coach and I mean none, will be perfect when having to replace 9(??) guys. They were left short big men, which is part of Ben's minutes in the defensive side and now that Ivisic is out...... we've sprung leaks on both ends. We run everything through him. When healthy, we can be unbeatable. When he's not..... we're just bad.

KJ CLEARLY Isn't the same guy without him. He looks lost. The two man game with TI was a thing of beauty. Now.....he just is out of sorts.

To me, the issue is the off-season and bringing back no continuity. Running two more coaches off the bench doesn't help, ESPECIALLY when players are attacked at the hip.

THAT SAID.....money only goes so far.

JMHO

Surely part of that contract wasn’t guaranteed minutes regardless of how he’s playing, right? I practically threw the remote at the TV when he started in OT.
Definitely playing a role in the stubbornness, I’ll leave it at that
If that's really the case, and I don't doubt your closeness to the situation, DB, that's the problem with the team right there. You give out assured minutes to a transfer who just is struggling to compete at a B10 level while icing out and making no promises to your guys who you recruited and bought into your program and play hard as nails, this is exactly what happens.

Every player sees it, and knows it's not a meritocracy, it's playing the new favorite, deserved or not. So no matter how much sweat you leave on the court it doesn't matter. Hard to blame Ty or Amani or Sencire. We gave them up for this garbage and we shoved the everyday guy vulture out the door with it. And man could we use their heart, fire, and leadership right now. Maybe it's the staff that needs to be running windsprints until they puke right now.

The funny thing is Brad said in the presser Riley had a good look at the end of regulation. Some of his comments are just bizarre
Looks to me that the pressure of our recent performances is getting to Brad. I did not like his after-game presser. Blaming everything on not having players available. Sure, that is a major issue, but he sounds worse than IZZO after a bad loss.

BU, look in the mirror regarding the offense, relying on 3's and not running plays (especially in the first half last night), fix the TO's, and play players who are being effective. After all, you are the Coach!

Yeah b/c Xavier is just killing it this season. 🙄

Tough when you lose 2 starters every year before the season starts …

They aren’t doing any worse than us …

I’m not saying fire Brad and hire Sean but let’s just be realistic here … Brad is a top 10 paid coach … Our NIL is top 10 … Our ROI so far … Not great …

If Brad refuses to make staff changes after the year … That will be a major issue with the donors …

Can’t remember ever having a bigger black hole to throw the ball into. Throw it to him and you can guarantee it’s not coming back.

And I think he’s teammates have started to catch on. I swear they don’t pass it to him when he actually looks open enough to get a shot off.

Honestly the turnovers were more infuriating than any shot Ben took (in regulation) last night.

It's called we have high expectations for this program... We have a coach talkin the talkin pre-season about how we don't run from anyone, we want to play the best of the best.. Recently said he thinks we can be a final 4 team... Well my friend, we've lost to Northwestern, USC, and Nebraska... and got absolutely dog walked by Maryland.. those are 4 of the bottom teams in the Big Ten. We are 2-4 in our last 6 games.

Our offense and defense looked like complete dog poop last night...

Defensively we've given up 53 to Maryland and Northwestern in ONE HALF and 40 to Nebraska last night.

Insiders have long criticized the hiring of Tyler as an assistant for HIS FIRST JOB, that is the definition of NEPOTISM and that BS is not acceptable.

Hamer is just bad at his job...

#598
Oh, there's little doubt this team will finish under .500 in conference. They'll be squarely on the bubble soon enough. Lock of all locks.

#599
Dra should obviously be playing more than Ben. But is there a thought that Brad may be thinking of next year?

Dra is more than likely going to enter the transfer portal. If you play him a lot and he plays well, which he has. He would most likely leave for a program that will pay him well and play him. If you don't play him a lot this year, his value is not as high as it could be. But Illinois would probably be able to offer him the most money and tell him he will be playing more.

Dainja with 19 and 11 tonight. 9 of 11 shooting
What's this team desperately missing right now... ANY post presence on offense. Like even a guy we can just have post up... We don't have any way to get easy buckets right now... But good thing we ran off Dainja, Amani, shoot, even Ty... Underwood's grand plan was stretch the floor, shoot 3's, who gives a crap about post offense or the inside out game... Problem is that he built a team and an offense around shooting and we don't shoot it well
