NFL combine 2023 results tracker: 2 pairs of teammates dominate, historic 40-yard dash, more big performances

Fighting Illini dominate

If not for the dazzling cornerback duo of Maryland's Deonte Banks and Jakorian Bennett, we'd be talking about Illinois as having the best pair of teammates to work out Friday night. Jartavius Martin was the headliner, as his 44-inch vertical jump topped all defensive players, and he complemented that with an 11-foot-1 broad jump (first among safeties) and a 4.46 40-yard dash (third).

That said, don't sleep on teammate Sydney Brown, who finished right behind Martin in the broad jump (10-foot-10) while jumping 40.5 inches and running the 40 in 4.47 seconds.

After Lions rookie Joseph's success, Illinois DBs look to make mark on draft class

And yes, Brown is right: The NFL success of Joseph, who had four interceptions and two forced fumbles last season, means nothing for whether he or Witherspoon or Martin will succeed at the next level.

But, it is possible that Joseph's explosiveness has given teams an idea of what they're going to get when they draft another Illinois defensive back with a mean streak. Witherspoon has an abundance of what the kids are now calling 'that dawg in him.'

Just flip on the film: He's relentless in press coverage. He lays wood on ball carriers. All of the concerns about him being undersized are valid, but perhaps less so when you realize that it's developed a significant chip on his shoulder.

Love this quote from Detroit Lions head coach talking about our Secondary guys…

"Just when you sit in there and you hear them talk about football. There's a fire burning in them. And they can't sit in their seat. They got to get up to talk. They got to tell you what's going on, 'this is what I think, this is what I —' Campbell said.

"You can't fake that. ... And those guys are rare. If you can find those guys and they've got some ability — which most guys here do — it's hard not to like them."

Please let’s keep this going. I feel like when you watch big ten teams vs really good teams from other P5s, the linebackers and secondary are where we get exposed. Other P5 teams generally just slash through us. A consistently dominant secondary would go a long way for us to close that gap when we play bowl games against these guys.

They still need a second outside corner since Gordon plays more slot/nickel. If there weren’t holes everywhere else on that team they’d have been a great candidate to try and trade back and draft Witherspoon
they've suffered at safety for a long time. I've suffered as a bear fan for a long time. Jackson is a good guy, but scared to death to hit somebody. Thats a bad trait for a safety.
