I'd be absolutely shocked if they cut Mixon after this season. It'd take an outstanding performance from Chase or one of the other backups for that to even remotely happen.

And as another pointed out, Perine signed in Denver in the offseason.
Oh I completely agree.
But the contract does not tie them to the 2nd year, in case this coming year doesn’t work out for whatever reason…be it age, injury etc.
different than say this year where they owe like 10 mil guaranteed.

When they initially signed Mixon to an extension back in 2020, it was for 4 years, not 2 years. His cap hit next year will be $13 million. They won't be cutting him anytime soon.

I am going to assume that is not the right $$ #'s. The NFL has a base salary minimum that keeps raising each year per the CBA.
the base salary only kicks in if you make the 53 man roster .
Even the guys on the practice squad dont get that.
Guys invited as UFA's to camp basically get a small signing bonus and stipend to pay for rent for May - July .

He can be a nice piece for the Bengals as he could be a third down back as he is great in the flat and has the ability to avoid a big hit.

So basically the same role that Samaje Perine played for them last season. They do also have Trayveon Williams and former Michigan RB Chris Evans on the roster as well. And it sounds as if Mixon could be a potential cap casualty after this season so taking Chase does make more sense.

For those potentially wanting to see a couple non-divisional opponent former Illini play against each other (and with it being a relatively close drive to Chambana), the Seahawks will play in Cincinnati this season. For our west coast Illini followers, the Eagles and Commanders will play in Seattle this season as well.

This is correct. Undrafted free agents are looking at $10k to $20k to cover expenses with their shot at making the team. Had a neighbor who's son played for MSU and was in Vikings camp as an UDFA a few years back. Didn't stick.

the sorta good news for some of these UFA’s that don’t stick is there are two professional spring leagues now , but they don’t pay much .

there are great stories of an UFA making the team and playing a few years , but that is even more rare than walk ons in college getting scholarships

I'm not sure where you're getting that info. Tons of UFAs in the league. Not sure what the date on this article is, but it was 486 throughout the league. Of course, kickers and punters are a significant part, but to call it rare is just not accurate.

besides special teamers, it’s rare for UFA’s to have meaningful careers in the NFL .

many position players who are UFA don’t stick very long . even late round draft picks will get cut now and then .

I was not clear .

it’s simply a hard way to make a living regardless. awesome for those that succeed .

Late round draft picks get cut routinely. So UFAs aren't that much different.

The NFL has the most churn of any of the leagues because of the way their contracts are structured as well as how common serious injuries are.

As to being an UFA on a NFL squad, it's certainly a lot less hard than your suggestion that they go to a spring football league.

yup , not unusual for a 6th or 7th rounder to get cut. and I recall David Williams, a 3rd rounder out of UI cut by the Bears in 1986.

and draft picks get a signing 110,000 signing bonus - 7th rounders do.

my point in general was about UFA's at least have two spring league options IF they dont make the roster or practice squad.
And I have no idea where the XFL or USFL got most of their players from.

There are some players, especially late in the draft, who prefer to be UFAs rather than 7th round picks so that they can have their choice of where they want to sign.

The spring football league option is part of the reason A.J. McCarron is in the XFL. He said he wanted to have more on-camera playing time so that his kids could watch him play. That's why he went to the XFL, even though he could have made more money as a backup QB in the NFL.
